Most common door type used for

Queen Anne Style was paneled
doors. On each panel, there are
large panes of glass bounded by
smaller square panes or decorative
detailing.

http://www.historicnewengland.org/preserva
tion/your-older-or-historichome/architectural-style-guide

Many areas of paneling are filled

with colored glass. Each piece of
glass contains bright vibrant colors
and a large range of different
patterns. Even though the Queen
Anne style mostly used brighter
colors, the preference for Victorian
was more of a darker earth tone
which usually a combination of red,
forest green, burnt yellow and a
dark brown.

All door hardware had many other
finish options such as antique
brass, distressed nickel, bright
brass, satin nickel, stone, and
distressed bronze.

The exterior style of the door

frames is typically flat board with
drip caps and no larger than 5 1/2
in width. Trim around the doorway
typically were handcrafted with
added detail. Wood trim is framed
around every door including the
entryways to a room without a door.
Interior doors also had a window

Transitional Housing

SHEET:

Justification of the Solution

Queen Anne is the style of the historical transitional housing and located in San
Francisco, California. The wainscot on the walls is the dominant white color for all the area
of the interior. Wall colors are very neutral and on a warmer tone to bring coziness to
occupants. Some wall uses wallpaper for adding texture and accent color to the room. All
furnishings have curvy or round edges to contrast the linear clean line of the wainscot. The
chandelier placed in the center of medallion, the wainscot, and the cabriole furnishings are
really emphasis on the Queen Anne style.

The design of the interior is created with the historical style in mind but it doesnt
make the place feel classic, instead it is historic with a modern touch. Each apartment has
a living/kitchen room, bedroom and private bath. The furnishings in the apartments are
either curvy or rounded edge providing safety as there are children in the facility. Most of
the interior plans out so that each room has window for natural lighting. Where there is no
window, the warm white recessed lights are installed for ambient luminescent and task
lighting. And to add play of brilliant lighting to the interior, a candelabra chandelier is used.
A full-size kitchen offers plenty of counter space for prepping and cooking. All the amenity
of the interior offer conveniences for the occupants and make it feel like home.

As the transition housing is serving public needs, the interior is designed to

compliant with the ADA. The gathering area and ADA apartments do have the five-foot turn
around, 36 doors with lever handle, bathroom amenity to accommodate disabled person.
To meet with the standard code, all bedrooms have an egress in case of emergency. All
materials used in the interior are sustainability and eco-friendly; not only it helps the
environment but also benefit in health for the occupancies.

REFLECTION
With the plan layout and clients requirement on hand, I hastily jump into action and
draw out the plan according to the client must have list. For the first concept, I am pretty
sure that this will be a final. However, as each week lecture and assignment progressed, it
put me on pause and rethink of my process.
Resident design is a basic fundamental rule in which everyone needs to apply to a
project that needs to make it works efficiently and effortlessly. First, research of county
code compliant where the project is a crucial step to make the project moved smoothly.
Second, summary clients requirements and must have in a listed format. With clarification
from code complaints and summary, the matrix summary needs to draft and to address
the issues with the solutions. The space allocation is also draft up for special need and ER
group. Once everything is all written out, it is time to create a flow and adjacent relation
plan for the project. This step is very important in making the space function efficiently.
After all the steps above planed out, it is time for conceptual draft up. The draft up is just
bubble concepts for client to choose from. It is best for the Interior Designer to propose
few concepts to clients because each person has his/her own preference. Once client
chose the rough concepts, the block concepts with approximate dimension come next.
The block conceptual help the client visualized the space, how it functions and ultimately
select the final concept. With this fundamental rule applied, my initial plan has changed
quite a bit.
The transitional housing is a challenge project, both in commercial and residential.
Its not only deal with public but also personal space. For the ADA compliant, the space
planning is quite difficult, as most of the room need to have 5 feet turn-around. HVOC is
also play a role in keeping the internal air clean and fresh. Material and furniture selections
for the project must fit the Queen Anne historical style, up to code, eco-friendly and
sustainable. In conclusion, residential design is not only deal with space planning, aesthetic
such as light (how it effects us), impact of color, texture, balance, proportion, harmony
etc., it also getting underneath the skin, judging it, evaluating it and see that it can be
applied to make a space function and comfortable.
