Dear Mr. Hackett,

Greetings from the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) chapter at UC Irvine! My name
is Elizabeth Njuguna and I am the current President for our professional student organization. I
am writing to you on behalf of our family to share some positive information regarding NSBE
at UC Irvine and some future goals we aim to achieve; in hopes that you can provide some much
needed assistance as it is key for our success!
As part of the largest student-run organization in the nation, with over 30,000 members, NSBE at
UC Irvine has been very active in providing students of all disciplines with a positive and
supportive environment focused on academic achievement and professional development. We
welcome students from all backgrounds, and work diligently to fulfill the NSBE mission: to
increase the number of culturally responsible, black engineers, who excel academically, succeed
professional, and positively impact the community. The number of Black students who
matriculated in the School of Engineering at UCI in the academic year of 2015-16 is only 64
students out of a total 4076 students, less than 2% of the Engineering student body. In a society
where we are underrepresented in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics) fields, it is our job to excel and defy that. The only way to do that is to unite and
work together.
This year and the years preceding it, NSBE at UC Irvine has made commendable moves toward
o Our chapter has brought in a high number of underclassmen this year, striving to cultivate
these young minds into leaders. Last year, we increased our membership by 200%, tripling
the number of students that actively participates in our program.
o We have provided quality programs for not only the Black or engineering students, but for
UC Irvine students as a whole, circling around improving resumes, enhancing
professionalism, proper interviewing skills, team building, and networking opportunities.
o We have provided a mentorship program which involved academic tutoring, professional
development, and crucial skills development for the underclassmen of our chapter, built to
ensure that they have the proper support needed to excel.
o Our Chapter has been present at the NSBE Annual National Convention for the past 5
years. Last year, 13 members from the UC Irvine Chapter were able to attend the 42nd
Annual Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. There is no other conference that brings
together over 10,000 predominantly African-American and minority engineers. Such an
event has allowed them to network and share experiences, all while making professional
contacts with companies and universities in order to secure internships, graduate
fellowships, and full-time positions. In the past, many of our members have been able to
secure these opportunities, gain valuable engineering experiences, and expand their
networks throughout industry and academia. These conferences not only help the members
secure a brighter future, but also helps them influence their community.
o Similarly, our members have attended the Annual Fall Regional Conference (FRC).
Attendance has also helped several of our members to secure job and internship
opportunities with top companies, as well as access resources to improve academically and
professionally. Participation in FRC has also allowed members to connect with fellow
NSBE Members, NSBE Professionals, and companies on a more local level.
We dont plan on stopping right there, we want to use this momentum on accomplishing further

goals and allow more of our members to experience the benefits of the organizations. A couple of
steps we plan on taking to further the development and effectiveness of our chapter are:
o Academic Advancement:
Weekly sessions will be offered to collegiate students in the organization year round
based on their personal needs
We will be incorporating the Guaranteed 4.0 Program to help increase our chapter
GPA and help our members academically excel
o Professional Advancement:
Several events will be dedicated to prepare members for the industry, preparing in
landing internships or full-time position that they want. These events will be focused
on business etiquette, interview workshops, and resume building. Events include our
First Annual Corporate Networking Mixer, Professionals Panel, and presentations
by Professionals during our general meetings. These will be key in preparing our
members for interactions with members in Industry at FRC, Annual Convention,
and any corporate events.
o Community Outreach:
Our PCI (Pre-Collegiate Initiative) Chairs are working on establishing NSBE Jr. this
year in an effort to expand the pipeline of Black students interested in engineering
and persuade more to pursue engineering as a profession. Members from our chapter
will be hosting tutoring sessions, scientific projects, and other events at high schools
such as Long Beach Polytechnic High School and King Drew Magnet High School.
We will be hosting a STEM Day at the UC Irvine Campus in the Fall inviting
middle school and high school students with significant numbers of AfricanAmericans. We will be offering workshops and sessions that will expose them to the
STEM fields.
We hope that you would value our cause, and any willingness to provide financial assistance to
help sponsor the students attending this conference would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Please feel free to contact me at any
time by phone at (626) 345-4538, or by email at enjuguna@uci.edu. I look forward to hearing
from you soon.
Best Wishes,

Elizabeth Njuguna
