MARRIAGE

HAND BOOK

(A) CHARGE AND DECLARATION:

COUPLE (STANDING, THE MINISTERS ADDRESSES) Dearly
beloved, we are gathered together here in the sight of God and
in the presence of this congregation, to join this man and this
woman in Holy Matrimony, which is an honourable estate,
instituted by God himself, signifying unto us the mystical union
that is between Christ and the Church, which holy estate Christ
adorned and beautified with His presence, and the first miracle
that he wrought in Canaan of Galilee, and is commanded in the
Holy scriptures to be honourable among all men and therefore
is not by any to be enterprise, nor taken in hands, unadvisedly,
lightly or wrongly but reverently, discreetly, soberly, and in the
fear of God duly considering the cause of which matrimony was
ordained.
Firstly, it was ordained for the procreation of children to be
brought up in the fear and nurture of the Lord, and to the
praise of His holy name.
Secondly, it was ordained for the remedy against sin, and to
avoid fornication.
Thirdly, it was ordained for the mutual society, help and
comfort that the one ought to have for the other, both in
prosperity, and in times of need.
Into this estate, these two persons have come to be joined.
Therefore, if any man can show any just cause, why they may
not be lawfully joined together, let him now speak, or else
hereafter, forevermore hold his peace.
(B) CHARGE TO THE BRIDE AND GROOM:

do now confess it. For be you assured, that if any persons are
joined together otherwise than as Gods word doth allow, their
marriage is not lawful.
THE MINISTER SHALL ASK:
Is there any lawful impediment why you may not be joined in
Holy Matrimony?
NONE: The Groom and the Bride shall respond.
(THE MINISTER TO THE GROOM)

to be your lawfully wedded wife, to live together after Gods
ordinances in the holy estate of matrimony? Will you love her,
comfort her, honour her and keep her, in sickness and in
health, and forsaking all others, keep you only to her, as long
as you both shall live.
GROOM: Yes I will God helping me.
