new option Angle error for reflection point : used to define the reflection point in degrees.
To define the reflection point, the following calculation is done: for each point of the profile, the
system calculates the incidental angle and the reflected angle and verifies that the two rays are cleared.
The system keeps the point which absolute difference between the two angles is the weakest. If this
difference is lower than Angle error for reflection point then the reflection point is found.
dBV/m->dBm conversion: the Rx pattern is taken into account
Warning: in Path radio mode, the dBm value is the result of a conversion dBV/m -> dBm, the
MODEL_ATTEN is taken into account (MODEL_ATTEN is the attenuation given by the model according to
free space without other attenuations (subpath, gaz...)).
In Path radio mode, the legend indicates the attenuation given by the model according to free space. This
information allows to know if the models are conform or not conform Free space.
In the legend, display of the clutter heights and re-display of the hydro areas
Frontiers (clutter code 19) are represented by pink vertical lines on the profile

Improvement of the interference subscribers C/I functions

All interference functions are now grouped together in a single dialogue box: the Subscriber interference
box
click here to view the image
The subscribers interference calculations are organised in two groups:
Interference from subscribers to base stations
Interference from base stations to subscribers
Some functions will consider the analysis for all subscribers or for all base stations (to all... functions) that
are parented or not and taking into account multi-channels frequencies, other functions will treat only
interference emanating from the subscribers or from base stations that are not parented.
Several calculations are offered and verify:
I/N with I=S of unwanted received powers and N=KTBF
I/N + i with I=S of unwanted received powers and N=KTBF
C/I with C=received power from the parented station and I=S of powers received from not parented base
stations
C/N + I with C=wanted received power, N=KTBF and I=S of unwanted received power
Subscriber to station
Subscribers to non parent base stations (I/N)
This function verifies the impact of the subscribers on the stations to which they are not connected.
Subscribers to all base stations (I/N)
This function verifies the I/N caused to all base stations by the not-parented subscribers and by the subscribers
using a different channel than the one assigned to the base stations (multi-channel frequencies).
Both functions were treated by the function formerly named Multipoint / Subscribers / Interference / Subscribers
to base stations (TI)...
Subscribers+MW to all base stations (N+I/i) : new function
This function calculates for each activated base station (except MW) the N+i ratio with N=ktfb of the station
and i=sum of received powers emanating from the non parent subscriber and from connected subscribers if
the station transmits at a different frequency than the one used by the connected subscriber.
Then, the received powers sum (I) from the activated microwave links are calculated.
The result is of I/N+i or I-(N+i) type in dBm.
IRF button: opens the Interference rejection factors box to define and to choose the interference rejection
factors to be taken into account in the Subscribers to station calculations.

Stations to non-parent subscribers (I/N)
This function verifies the impact of the station on the non parented subscribers.
Calculates the I/N with:
I=sum of the received powers by the subscriber from the non parent base stations
N=subscriber KTBF
Stations to all subscribers (I/N)
Calculates the I/N with:
I=sum of powers received by the subscriber from the non parent base stations and from the parented base
station for frequencies that are not used by the subscriber (multi-channel).
N=subscriber KTBF
Stations to all subscribers (C/I) : calculates the aggregate of the powers sum (I)
Calculates the C/I with:
C = received power from the parented base station
I = sum of the power received from the non parented base stations (all frequencies) and from the parented
base station for frequencies that are not used by the subscribers (including IRF and Xpoldiscrim).
For a correct operation of this function, it is necessary to assign frequencies to subscribers using the function
"Dispatch frequencies to parented subscribers..."
Note : this function updates the C/I value of the subscriber (list and display)
Stations to all subscribers (C/N+I) :
same as To all subscribers (C/I)... function with:
C=wanted power received by the subscriber and N+I (subscriber KTBF + sum of powers received from the
not parented base stations and from the parented base station at a different frequency from that of the subscriber).
Stations to non-parent subscribers (min C/I) : calculates the minimum C/I for a subscriber with:
I = field-maximum Xpoldiscrim from the non parented base station
Note : this function updates the C/I value of the subscriber (list and display)
Notes :
1- Interference C/I calculation: takes into account the polarisation crossing (Xpoldiscrim) for the unwanted
field.
2- In case of the using of ANDREW (RPE) antennas, the pattern of cross polar is already taken into account
in the received power calculation Xpoldiscrim = 0
IRF button: opens the Interference rejection factors box to define the rejection factors to be taken into
account in the Station to Subscriber calculations.
C/I button: opens the Protection ratio box to define the C/I ratios to be taken into account in the Stations to
non-parent subscribers (min C/I) calculation.

DISPATCH FREQUENCIES TO PARENTED SUBSCRIBERS...

FUNCTION

This function dispatches equally the available frequencies (multi-channels) of one base station between all its
parented subscribers.
Note : the parenting functions do not dispatch the channels according to the number of parented subscribers.
After a parenting and in case of multi-channels, it is necessary to rerun the dispatch function.

New option : Connecting to best server - interference. This option connects the subscribers to the best
server stations defined according to the interference results. Each station is declared wanted and unwanted.
The system calculates the C/sum(I) for each connection station to subscriber, with C= power received from
the wanted station, and sum(I) = sum of powers received from the unwanted stations - IRF. The best server
station is the one that obtains the maximum C/sum(I), i.e. that meets less interference.
New options : Connecting to best server - control bit rate and Connecting to nearest best server - control bit
rate. These options connect the subscribers to the best server stations taking into account their bit rate capacity.
The base stations have to be parametered in terms of bit rates (M/bits).
New options : Connecting to best server - control lines and Connecting to nearest best server - control lines.
These options connect the subscribers to the amount of the number of available lines of the each base station.
A subscriber uses the number of lines that has been defined in the Lines field of the Subscriber parameters
box.

STATUS FUNCTION
References

The status report indicates the number of lines used by the subscirbers on the station, and the bit rate used byt
the subscribers also.

NEW FUNCTION : PLANNING

This function is used to define the number and the location of base stations according to subscribers to be
covered. The subscribers have to be orphan, i.e. connected to no base stations.
The principle is to simulate orphan subscribers in order to define the recovering areas where base stations can
be installed and to define the number of stations that have to be setup to cover the subscribers. Then the
system runs a parenting calculation with the new base stations. At the end of the process, the system runs a
global parenting calculation with all the new stations.
The planning is parametered in terms of maximum number of sites, of number of stations per site, of distance
between sites, of spacing between antennas on a site. The site searching can be done in terms of field strength
or in visibility and is parametered in terms of field strength threshold, of calculation distance and of calculation
model to be applied.
Several subscriber parenting options are offered: parenting to the best server station, or to the nearest station,
with the lines capacity of the station or the grade of service taken into account.
For the site searching and in case of fruitless parenting, the system uses up to 10 site searching different
algorithms.
1- Open the DB Subscribers database, and select the orphan subscribers that have to be treated
2- Select function Subscribers / Planning
3- The Prospective planning from subscribers box is opened:
click here to view the image
Terrain Filter : to define the site establishment areas: clutter zones can be selected (the clutter file has to be
present in the project) and altimetric areas can be defined with a minimum and a maximum terrain height.
Site and station constraint:
- Maximum site to deploy : maximum number of sites to be established on the terrain
- Minimum distance between 2 sites: in metres
- Number of stations per site
- Spacing between antennas: spacing in degrees between antennas located on the same site
- Deploy site when subscribers covered >=: maximum number of covering required to establish a site
- Remove site if subscriber(s) connected <: the system will delete the stations to which the number of
connected subscribers is lower than the value entered in this input field. e.g : by default, the system
will delete the stations to which only 1 subscriber is connected.
- Stop if subscriber(s) not connected <=: the system will stop the planning when the percentage of
orphan subscribers will be lower or equal to the value entered in this input field. eg.: enter 20 to stop
ICS Telecom4.++ - News / Modifications - Update 09/99 - page 31

the planning when 80% of the subscribers will be connected.

- At the end, de-activate station if no subscriber connected: at the end of the calculation, the system
will verify all the base stations and will de-activate those that are not used.
- Station parameters button: opens a Com parameters box to define the parameters of the base stations
to be setup.
Note : for the base stations, define the bandwidth, the bit rate and / or the lines in order to use the
corresponding parenting rules.
Parenting rule:
- Connecting to best server - field strength: connects the subscribers to the Best server station
- Connecting to nearest server - field strength: connects the subscribers to the nearest station
- Connecting to best server - control bandwidth : connects the subscribers to the best server station
taking into account the bandwidth capacity of the station
- Connecting to nearest server - control bandwidth : connects the subscribers to the nearest station
taking into account the bandwidth capacity of the station
- Connecting to best server - control bit rate : connects the subscribers to the best server station taking
into account the bit rate capacity of the station
- Connecting to nearest server - control bit rate : connects the subscribers to the nearest station taking
into account the bit rate capacity of the station
- Connecting to best server - control lines : connects the subscribers to the Best server station to the
amount of available lines of the station. A subscriber uses a number of lines as defined in the Lines
field of the Subscriber parameters.
- Connecting to nearest server - control lines : connects the subscribers to the nearest station to the
amount of available lines of the station. A subscriber uses a number of lines as defined in the Lines
field of the Subscriber parameters.
- Connecting to best server - control GOS : connects the subscribers to the best server station to the
amount of the defined threshold (grade of service). Required parameters are: the number of lines of the
stations and the Erlang value of the subscribers. Two Erlang formulas are offered: Erlang B and
Erlang C. The threshold (grade of service) is entered by the user.
- Connecting to nearest server - control GOS : connects the subscribers to the best server station to the
amount of the defined threshold (grade of service). Required parameters are: the number of lines of the
stations and the Erlang value of the subscribers. Two Erlang formulas are offered: Erlang B and
Erlang C. The threshold (grade of service) is entered by the user.
Simulation area: site searching parameters
- Field strength calculation : if this option is selected, the site searching option will be done in terms of
field strength. Otherwise it is a visiblity calculation that will be run.
Note : the parenting calculation are done in terms of field strength. If the site searching has been performed in
visibility, some incoherences may occure between the site establishment and the parenting of this site with
the subscribers. In case of establishment error, the system will use up to 10 different site searching algorithms
that will search a new site for the station that will allow a parenting. If the research is still fruitless after these
10 algorithms, the system will stop the research and will alerts the user by a Message box.
- Threshold for parenting: in dBV/m - The default value is the threshold defined by the FSR tool.
Click on the 3 points button to modify it.
- Maximum distance calculation button: same as DST tool
- Model button: opens the Propagation models box for the choice of calculation models and options

New option : Receiver coverage : calculates the power receiving capacity of all stations that are selected in
the base - receiving coverage in dBW
New option : Tx/Rx variable height coverage : calculates the coverage of each station that has been selected
in the base, and for different antenna height - coverage in metres.
New option : Tx composite coverage + C/I (station color)
This option calculates (as the Tx composite coverage + C/I option does) the composite coverage + the
protection ratio (according to the unwanted reference frequency) of the selected stations. The results are of
type: colour of the station that has at each point the weakest field strength to be protected.
Ex : For a threshold of 54 dBV/m
Station A (100 MHz) = 56 dBV/m
Station B (100.1 MHz) = 70 dBV/m
Station C (100.2 MHz) = 60 dBV/m
unwanted frequency = 100 MHz
The field strength emanating from each station is modified as follows:
a) C/I between 100 MHz and 100 MHz station A = 36
b) C/I between 100 MHz and 100.1 MHz station B = 12
c) C/I between 100 MHz and 100.2 MHz station C = 6
the coverage of station A is displayed for a threshold of 54-36 = 18
the coverage of station B is displayed for a threshold of 54-12 = 42
the coverage of station C is displayed for a threshold of 54-6 = 48
For each P point of the terrain, the field strength kept is MIN(FsA, FsB, FsC)

ICS Telecom4.++ - News / Modifications - Update 09/99 - page 42

In the "station color" option, the display of the map is of station colour type that gives MIN(FsA, FsB, FsC).
New option : Threshold interference level (field strength) : calculates the acceptable field at the Frequency
reference in the coverage area of the selected stations. Displays the global coverage of the selected station
reduced of the defined C/I according to the Frequency reference that is considered unwanted.
C/I button: Opens the Protection ratio box for the choice of the C/I ratios to be taken into account in the Tx
composite coverage + C/I (field strength et station color) and Threshold interference level (field strength)
calculations.
Threshold : the default threshold is the one defined by the FSR tool - to modify it, click on the 3 points
button.
New Frontier function allowing to calculate for the selection (stations with associated coverage), the
maximum field strength at n km of the frontier, or found between n0 and n1 km inside or outside the frontiers.
Note : This function, and the Map / Filter / Frontier functions, use the .FTR files containing the internal and
external frontiers distance in one single file of 16 bits .ic2 format.
1- In the Station database box, select the stations that have an associated coverage and that have to be taken
into account in the calculation
2- Click on Frontier button
3- The Frontier box is opened
click here to view the image
- Frontier file : designate the .FTR (IC2 format) file containing the internal and external frontiers distances for
each country.
- Country code file : designate the .COD (IC1 format) file containing at each point a country code and
allowing the maximum field strength calculation for each country.
- If needed, modify the threshold by clicking on the 3 points of the Threshold field.
- Select or de-select the inside frontier mode. In mode selected, the calculation will be done inside the
frontiers.
- Enter the minimum and the maximum distance to the frontier in km
Run the calculation via Ok (or cancel it via Cancel).
4- The calculation is performed. The results are displayed in a Report box and indicate for each selected
station, the maximum field strength in dBV/m, the distance to the frontiers in metres, the azimuth, the
effective height H1 according to Wien and the effective height H1 according to Geneva and the country code.
New option Population : allows to calculate site by site the covered population for the selected stations.
1- Select in the database the stations that have an associated coverage and that will be treated
2- Click on Population button
3- In the input box, enter the field strength threshold
4- The calculation is run for each selected stations
5- The results are displayed in a Report box and indicate the number of people coverage and the corresponding
percentage for each station.
The option Keep previous filter allowing to cumulate the filter results, is inserted in the Station Database
box

All selected stations are the unwanted elements. The system will verify the interference caused by the stations
for some frequencies defined between a min and a max frequency and according to a frequency step, and will
increase all points of the unwanted coverage with the found C/I.
The scripte modifies the coverage with the C/I found, and generates for each interfering frequency a printout
of the coverage overlaid on the terrain.
