Execution in the name of freedom- When Khamini took over, he started to

kill people. He was also turning into a dictator. It was not much of a
democracy. There is involvement of politics.
That was that- They had to do that because it was imposed. It was nothing
where you could ask. There was no democracy involved.
Her expression- She is very neutral in her tone as right now she doesnt
understand the implication of the rule and as a 10 year old she was
describing what was happening.
Colour contrast- only black and white where the black represents the
Islamic oppression and the white stands for freedom. Its all black we cant
see that there are four women thus it shows that they are all sharing the
same idea. However, they are all different due to their hairstyle.
The veil people are looking at the sky, looking superior. While others look
towards them in anger and protest.
They are only looking at veil and not looking at the bigger idea where
oppression prevails.
When her picture was published, it was a moment of proud. We see that
even those who are demonstrating fear. Setrapi doesnt comment and she
just describes it as she is a ten year old.
In the last panel the look from the man is of suspicious because why is she
wearing dark glasses and her collar is up. Also, it shows how the men are
judging her and looking down upon her. The eye suggests a critical
assessment of her. The darkness is missing the scenery which brings out
the idea of darkness of the times and things going wrong.
The first three pages talks about the time, the revolution, the changes that
occurred and how people were affected to it. So she is establishing the
base.
The eyes are neutral because she was a ten year old and didnt think
much about the sign the veil stands for. Shows contrast about how she
feels inside and what is shown outside. When she says deep down, the
focus is on her thoughts about religion
She was born with religion which shows that she didnt have any choice
about her religion.
After her, there was no one good enough, so she thinks she is the best.
She makes an assumption about prophet that no one can be as great as
her. She feels that prophets are immortal, so shall her and thus she will be
the last.
Allusion to prophets. She is not thinking about her own religion only but
also all other religion and she will be hardest.
Even when she was so small, she knows that she will have problem
because she was a female. We can see is very different and unique which
allows her to think that there is different between man and woman.
She was reflective of ideas about why her maid didnt eat with them. The
maid s shown sitting far and treats the maid as if she was supposed to sit
on the dining table.
Also that her father has Cadillac but others dont have. The second is that
it is more social than religious. The image shows that her family is
superior. Her image is shown that she is almost hidden inside as if she is

ashamed of her identity as a rich person. This difference between the

family and maid and other people shows that she is upset about it.
She is expecting to become prophet who will eradicate epovery and
suffering. Thus he says that downt worry.youll see
She see her family as doing something wrong because they are rich.
As a child she interprets everything in a simple way: act well, speak well.
Image of the prophet shows that the stature that is rewarded to the
prophet is a lot because they are granted powers to put things they right.
Also, the people are shown to be small. Her attitude towards religion is that
of positivity. Her character shows that she doesnt need to be told by her
parents to read religious book. This shows her individuality and interest
and shows that she has the capacity to understand the world.
The parents let her read books thus there is a sense of freedom that she
enjoys in the family.
The message shows universal because every religion talks about the same
ideas.
