Abstrak
Pollution or contamination of the environment is the entry or entered his living being,
energy substances, and or other components into the environment or changing the order of
the environment by human activities or natural processes, so the quality of the environment
down to a certain level which causes the environment to be less or not can no longer function
as intended.Contamination may arise as a result of human activities or caused by natural (eg
volcanic eruption, toxic gases). Environmental science usually discuss pollution caused by
human activities, which can be prevented and controlled.
This paper discusses the environmental pollution caused by industrial waste, ranging
from an overview of environmental pollution, the impact of industrial waste, industrial waste
management practices, how to minimize industrial waste and sewage treatment
industri.Penyamakan way the skin is one example of hazardous industrial waste because it
produced a number of waste , either a solid or liquid which both impacts of pollution on the
environment.
Wastes are substances, energy, and or other components are released or disposed of as
a result of something that activities both industrial and non-industrial. Industrial waste is
waste material as a byproduct of an industrial production process to form a solid, liquid or
gas that can cause pollution.Waste management is an integrated activity which includes the
reduction (minimization), segregation (segregation), handling (handling), utilization and
processing of waste. Thus to achieve optimal results, the activities surrounding waste
management needs to be done and not just relying on waste treatment activities only.

PART I

PRELIMINARY

1.1 Background

We can know that Indonesia is a country that is very rich in natural resources and
countries are densely populated. Indonesia also has a wide range of industrial factories and
households, both upper class and middle class. Of course, the more the plant, the more
garbage / waste generated, so that Indonesia kualahan deal with this problem.
The number of domestic factories and industries certainly positive and negative
impacts on the surrounding communities. The positive impact of a number of the industry,
will certainly enhance the welfare of society and would reduce unemployment in Indonesia,
which has also become a major problem for Indonesia. Indonesia also should be mindful of
the many negative impacts of this industry, which would be detrimental to society and the
environment that will happen pollution, water pollution, soil and air. Over time, garbage /
waste will increase and more and more. Surely this is a very big problem for the country
Indonesia, if all this can not be processed correctly.
Leather tanning industry in Kampung Sukaregang Garut, West Java, has a long history
of travel, or older than the same industry sector in Magetan. Sukaregang, existed since time
Jerpang, which was first pioneered by the tanning industry workers in Jatayu Bandung.
Currently Sukaregang environmental conditions are in need of government interest and
participation of all the entrepreneurs among the government officials, should not only acquire
information about the condition Sukaregang of certain parties.
The negative impact that struck Indonesia and the environment needs to get serious
attention, because of industrial waste polluting nature contains a number of elements harmful
chemicals that can pollute water bodies and damage soil and plants as well as further cause to
health hidup.Pemerintah beings shall intervene to deal with this problem, for health in
Inonesia, good natural health, and individuals, as well as specialized studies are necessary
Yag discuss the industrial waste and garbage besrta impact on the environment
1.2 Purpose and Objectives
The purpose and goal of making this paper include :

1). As the study materials the students about the impact

environmental pollution due to industrial waste. tannery
is one example of a dangerous industry because it produces waste.
2). As a way to find ways to cope with the effects of pollution are being studied.
3). As a method for collecting data on the environmental pollution caused by waste
particularly the leather tanning industry.

1.3 Scope Papers

This paper discusses the environmental pollution caused by industrial waste, ranging
from an overview of environmental pollution, the impact of industrial waste, industrial waste
management practices, how to minimize industrial waste and sewage treatment
industri.Penyamakan way the skin is one example of hazardous industrial waste because it
produced a number of waste , either a solid or liquid which both impacts of pollution on the
environment.
Clothing and leather sectors like pncucian bati, batik printing, leather tanning can cause
pollution due to the washing process requires water as mediunnya in large numbers. This
process raises the wastewater (the former) are great as well, where the waste water containing
the remains of colors, high BOD, high oil content, and toxic (B3 waste containing high).
Many of the people of Indonesia in general and the people of Garut especially those
still using river water as a source of water to meet the daily needs such as toilets (bath,
washing and latrine), agricultural and industrial activities, especially activities tanning
industry and large-scale home industries, as well as a large scale.

CHAPTER II
THEORETICAL BASIS

2.1 Definition of Environmental Pollution

According to the Act - managing principal of Environmental Law No. 4 of 1982.
Pollution or contamination of the environment is the entry or entered his living being,
energy substances, and or other components into the environment or changing the order of
the environment by human activities or natural processes, so the quality of the environment
down to a certain level which causes the environment to be less or not can no longer function
as intended.
Contamination may arise as a result of human activities or caused by natural (eg
volcanic eruption, toxic gases). Environmental science usually discuss pollution caused by
human activities, which can be prevented and controlled.
Government Regulation No. 82 of 2001 on Environmental Pollution control,
explaining that not diperkenangkan of liquid waste into the ground unless he got permission
from the minister concerned and on the results of the research. It is therefore expected that
any industrial activities that emit waste should be equipped with wastewater treatment plants,
in the hope of minimizing the impacts that occur, so that the environment can be resolved.
Waste is one of the factors that can cause pollution.
2.2 Types of Environmental Waste
Wastes are substances, energy, and or other components are released or disposed of as
a result of something that activities both industrial and non-industrial. Industrial waste is
waste material as a byproduct of an industrial production process to form a solid, liquid or
gas that can cause pollution.
Filth is non-industrial waste material as a byproduct and not from industry, but from
households, offices, restaurants, entertainment venues, markets, shops, hospitals and others
that can cause pollution. Waste generated by an activity both industrial and nonindustri can
cause foul-smelling gases eg H2S and ammonia and contain pathogenic organisms that can
cause disease. Therefore, sewage treatment is needed in order not to pollute the environment.
Industrial waste pollution distinguished by industry was undertaken. Various
industry that produced, among other things: the food industry, chemical industry and building

materials, clothing, leather and miscellaneous industries, and logan & electronics industry.
Industrial waste generated was different and side effects / impact that was different.
Understanding Wastewater according to the experts:
According to Sugiharto (1987), waste water (waste water) is grime of communities
and households and also from industry, groundwater, surface water and other waste. Thus the
waste water is a thing that is common dirt.
According to Okun & Ponghis (Nurhasanah 2009) stated "the word 'wastewater'
'should be taken to mean all liguid domestic wastes (including sewage) and all industrial
wastes discharged to public sewerage system, but not rain water or surface drainage".
According Willgooso (Nurhasanah, 2009). "Carrying Water Wastewater is Wasts
from Homes, Businesses and Industries that is Mixture of Water and Disolued or Suspended
Solids"
Of the several definitions of waste water, it can be concluded that wastewater is a
combination or a mixture of water and materials contamination carried by water, either in a
state dissolved or suspended waste from domestic sources (office, residential and trade),
industry sources, and in particular when mixed with ground water, surface water and
rainwater.
Trends in the waste management industry is run integrated reduction activities,
segregation and handling of waste so as to reduce costs and generate less waste output and
minimal levels of pollution. Integration in waste management is then made into a variety of
concepts such as: production of clean (cleaner production), or the minimization of waste
(waste minimization). In principle, the concept of cleaner production and waste minimization
efforts generates less waste and the amount of contamination that minimum level. However,
there are some different emphases of the two concepts, namely: clean production start the
implementation of the optimization of the production process, while minimizing waste,
started implementation of reduction and utilization of waste generated.

CHAPTER III

DISCUSSION
3.1 Overview of Environmental Pollution
This industry is a producer of raw materials for leather industries processing into
finished goods such as luggage, handbags, shoes, jackets, handicrafts etc. Leather tanning
industry in its production processes use a lot of raw water. Therefore the development of this
industry must be balanced with the development of wastewater treatment technologies,
particularly liquid waste. Leather tanning industry is looked at is the central areas of the
leather industry Sukaregang, Garut, West Java, with a sampling of the most representative
production unit.
Effluent treatment plants are now generally include physical processing-chemicalbiology and has been adapted to the planned discharge. As a source of energy to drive
pompapompa on the use genertator installation with a capacity of 16 HP. This waste
processing unit does not function as it should. Some production units only carry out an initial
deposition as processing. From observations during the field, it is known that the processing
units that are not yet adequate. This is because the initial processing unit which is the initial
sedimentation basin and initial equalization has not been shared by all production units.
The stench seems to have become everyday citizens Sumbersari Village, Village
Wetan, Garut Kota subdistrict, Garut. Not surprisingly, due to the smell, the residents
protested with waste disposal leather factory in the industrial district Sukaregang skin, Garut.
the odor from waste Sukaregang Leather Industry, which is discharged into the river banks of
Kampong Bentar. Almost every day people around the river inhaling the stench. If you want
to get the air they have to go to the city center that has not been contaminated.
Let the people around, the scent of the foul smell has also been captured by the road
user with a radius of 200 meters. The foul smell wafted louder if the early afternoon. Even
many people who live in the house can not stand the smell. Not infrequently they often
experience dizziness-pusing.Bahkan streams contained in Kampungbentar dirty water
conditions and clogged by garbage.
Contamination level waste disposal impacts the tanning industry in Garut, West
Java (Jabar), is considered to be high, due to still not optimal functioning of the three units
Waste Installation (IPAL), because it is constrained fulfillment of operational costs.
Then there are the pilot activities proposed WWTP operation at a cost of Rp 1 billion each
year, said the head of the Department of Environment, Parks and Hygiene Garut, IrSukinta.

This problem has been proposed to the West Java province when their legislative recess in
Garut recently.
Mentioned, will soon discuss the impact that can be caused by tannery waste, as
well as joint efforts to deal with the relevant technical agencies and entrepreneurs tannery, as
indicated Copong irrigation network in the region, many tainted elements crohm and
mercury. overcome the impact of the tanning industry waste includes the operations of the
WWTP is the responsibility of employers tannery, but in reality they still require a genuine
understanding and awareness, to jointly cooperate and work together to address them.
Those problems if left unchecked could endanger the health of the surrounding
community, as recognized by the Secretary of Regional Development Planning Board
(Bappeda) Garut, DrsDjadjaSukardja, there have been studies on the effects of the tannery
waste, but so far it is not yet published.
Of the approximately 300 units of the tanning industry in the village
SukaregangGarut, about 200 units of which are worthy of support actively producing
adequate waste management system, including industrial solid waste, following long since
there were various complaints surrounding communities including complaints very smelled
streams.
3.2 Environmental Waste Treatment
Waste management is an integrated activity which includes the reduction
(minimization), segregation (segregation), handling (handling), utilization and processing of
waste. Thus to achieve optimal results, the activities surrounding waste management needs to
be done and not just relying on waste treatment activities only.
When waste management is only directed at the processing activity, the load of
activities in Waste Water Treatment Plant will be very heavy, requiring a broader area, more
pieces of equipment, technology and high costs. Preliminary activities on waste management
(reduction, segregation and waste management) will help reduce the burden of wastewater
treatment in WWTP.
Cleaner Production emphasis on production procedures are minimal pollutants,
waste, lack of water and energy. Pollutant or hazardous materials is minimized by a good
selection of raw materials, a high degree of purity, or Clean. Additionally attempted use of
water-efficient appliances and energy saving.

CHAPTER V
PROPOSAL AND SUGGESTIONS

5.1 Opinions and Suggestions

Opinions:
Lack processing waste either by production tannery looked at are the central areas of
the leather industry Sukaregang, Garut, West Java. With so almost every day people around
the river inhaling the stench. If you want to get some air, residents have to go to the city
center that has not been contaminated and dirty water conditions and clogged by garbage.
And yet the optimal function of three units Waste Installation (IPAL), because it is
constrained fulfillment of operational costs. Those problems if left unchecked could endanger
the health of the surrounding community.

Suggestion :
Should be more concerned about the environment, particularly pollution from
industrial waste disposal tannery in Garut, West Java (Jabar), is considered to be high. Must
be optimized function of three units Waste Installation (IPAL), waste management needs to
be done and not just relying on waste treatment activities only.
Then there should be research on the effects of the tannery waste, as well as the concerns of
the local community to help address the problem tersebut.Kulit-skin that are not used can be
recycled to make crafts or household goods.
