Purpose
This bulletin explains how to program the Microscan MS-3 barcode reader to meet your
laboratory-specific requirements.
Background
All ADVIA 120/2120 Hematology systems delivered after February 2007 will be equipped
with a new Microscan MS-3 barcode reader. Specific instructions are needed to program the
reader to meet individual customer barcode unique symbology requirements. Field Service
Engineers should perform the following procedure on new ADVIA 120 2120 installations,
or when replacing a barcode reader for any reason. Follow these instructions to program the
reader for barcode symbologies in addition to the special factory default symbologies.

Action
Field Service Engineers should perform the following procedure to program the MS-3 reader
for custom barcode symbologies that are needed in addition to the special factory default
settings.
Procedure
For example, to program the Code 39 with check digit, use the following steps:
1.
Open the link to the MS-3 Common Programming Codes below in this bulletin, assemble
the required codes in order beginning with the START code, followed by the specific
programming codes, and then ending with the Save & END command. See the example in
figure 1. Code 39 enable / check digit enable / do not transmit check digit.
2.
3.
4.
From the Utilities menu, click the Exerciser tab, then click Autosampler in the list on the
left.
5.
6.
Position the codes in the mixer rail, with the START code positioned in the barcode scan
slot inside the mixer rail, as shown in figure 2.
7.
In the exerciser, click your mouse on the scan button in the upper right hand area of the
screen. This will put the reader into the programming mode and the beam will turn on and
stay on until an END or RESET command is read.
8.
Beginning with the START code, slowly move the codes through the laser beam from left
to right.
9.
Listen for an audible beep after each code is read. A successful read is indicated by an
audible beep, be sure that you hear the beep before proceeding. You might have to move
the paper back & forth until you get a successful read.
10. After the END code is read the reader will turn off, now you must exit the Exerciser by
clicking on the Utilities tab, then Analyzer Status.
11. After the autosampler resets go back into the Exerciser and load a rack with tubes with the
actual labels attached. Perform a Label Read Test as described in the ADVIA 120 / 2120
Service Guide under Autosampler, alignments and procedures, barcode reader.
12. After successful completion of the label test, ensure that all labels were read without errors.

NOTE
In the document link labeled MS-3 Common Programming Codes in this bulletin are codes
for the different barcode symbologies supported by the MS-3 reader. By following the same
steps, as described above for the code 39 with check digit, you may reprogram the reader
with the most suitable barcode for your laboratory.

For further flexibility you can log on to the Microscan site directly www.microscan.com ,
access & download the MS-3 Laser Manual, and ESP software. Downloading the ESP
software will enable you to create barcodes for programming the MS-3 reader, in Code 128
bar code symbols. It requires you to create a new account before access is granted. Once you
have access, proceed as follows:

The systems will continue to use the Opticon manual wand (PN 067-B468-03).
The old Opticon reader is available until present inventory is depleted (PN 067-0806-01).
