Amwaj Astrolabe
The Astrolabe water feature was commissioned
for the official opening ceremony. Designed
by a specialist Sundial/Water feature expert,
it now forms part of the permanent landscape.
The sculpture, based on an Astrolabe, an
ancient Arabic navigational tool, provides
a focal point for Islanders and a cherished
memory of a crowning moment.

A short history lesson

For thousands of years, Bahrain has been defined
by its relationship with water in one way or another.
Formerly known as Dilmun, the country was an
important trading centre that linked Sumeria with
the Indus Valley as early as 5,000 BC.
In ancient times, Bahrain was the only haven where
fresh water could be found on the long journey
between Mesopotamia and India. The presence of
fresh water through natural springs beneath the sea
is thought to account for the name Bahrain itself
an Arabic word meaning two seas, which refers
to the ancient belief that there was another sea
beneath the sea bed.
