MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is paying carful attention to your thoughts, feelings, and

environment in an accepting nonjudgmental way. It is when you take the
time out of the fast pace life to slow down and reflect. An example of this
would be taking a few moments to breathe, stretch, or imagine a peaceful
place that will calm the emotions. In the classroom if students are
overwhelmed with the lesson they are being taught, as a teacher it is key to
be mindful and to take an opportunity to allow for students to practice
mindfulness through exercises of breathing or stretching. The video we
watched in class gave an example of when students are stressed their brains
are similar to a jar filled with glitter that has been shaken up. The glitter is
chaotically everywhere. When the jar is still and the glitter has settled, the
student is mindful of his or her thoughts. Mindfulness connects to TPE 5:3
that states beginning teachers are to, involve students in self-assessment
and reflection on their learning goals and progress and provide students with

opportunities to revise their work. This TPE 5:3 focuses on having students
self-assess and reflect themselves and their learning. In order for students to
be able to assess themselves and their learning they need to be mindful.
Teachers and students both need to be mindful throughout the process of
learning to be able to reflect, adjust, and understand to make progress.
