Proper Nutrition is essential for growth development, health and ones well-being.
Good Nutrition facilitates the development of a child in all dimensions and has
considerable long-lasting effects on the childs life (Beryl, 2000). Recent studies in
the field of nutrition reaffirm the importance of nutrition as a prerequisite for good
cognitive development in children (Ray 2004 and Becker, 2000). Good nutrition is
also essential for countrys general development as childrens, good health
eventually translates into good performance thus resulting into brilliant leaders
who will be productive economically, socially and in all other areas as Health is
wealth (Seth and Johnson, 1991).

Nutrition dictates more than a person's body mass index. Balanced nutrition is important to child
development because children need specific nutrients to thrive and grow. Proper child
development relies on a solid nutritional foundation, which includes the correct amount of each
nutrient. A study conducted by (H. Peter Chase and Harold P. Martin) children who were
hospitalized for under nutrition during their first year of life, found that these children were
consistently smaller than children who had not experienced under nutrition, even three and four
years later. Growth resulting from poor nutrition is correlated with poor academic performance
and lowered mental capacity.

A childs developmental potential is highly sensitive to external influences such as


poverty, maternal depression, low birth weight, genetics and nutrition (Ahmed, Hossain,
and Sanin, 2012) and also the developmental skills of the child ( Prado, and Dewey,
2014). Nutrition deficiencies have been shown to cause neurological changes on both
morphological and functional levels which affect the developmental stages of the child
(Atalabi, Lagunju, Tongo, and Akinyinka, 2010.) the long-term effects in the early
childhood under nutrition have been studied which are include impaired gross and fine
motor skills such as poorer endurance, lower flexibility and lesser scores on rapid
sequence movements (Galler, Ramsey, Salt, and Archer, 1987; Paiva et al., 2012),
cognitive impairments for the age of the a child, lower attention spans in focusing their
study, impaired language skills which are not totally developed and lower IQ scores
(Rose, 1994; Waber et al., 2014).Other findings are behavioural problems such as lack
of socialization and interaction to their age peer (Galler, Bryce, Waber, Hock, et al.,
2012) and poorer school results like activities, quizzes, exams, recitation (Bisset,
Foumier, Pagani, and Janosz, 2013; Shariff, Bond, and Johnson, 2000; Waber et al.,
2014).These effects have been found that it is continuously (Galler, Bryce, Waber, et
al.,2012).

Obesity is a major public health issue that is prevalent among many preschool children and one
in four preschoolers is now considered obese (French et al., 2006). Childhood obesity leads to

health risks such as heart disease, diabetes 2, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol (Donahue
et al., 2006). To know that we use BMI Body mass index to calculated value of weight for height
and is compared with age- and gender-specific standards (Centers for Disease Control, 2009) to
figure out if your child is malnourish or obese. A balance of foods high in nutrition and physical
activities can prevent these health risks. But an imbalance of energy dense, high caloric foods
such as soft drinks, chips, and other foods with high fat content along with a sedentary lifestyle
can raise the risks (Donahue et al., 2006).
