Darwin: Theory, Reality, and Controversy

Charles Robert Darwin was a geologist and naturalist, born in February 12, 1809 The
Mount, Shrewsbury, United Kingdom. Charls Darwin was married to his first cousin Emma Darwin in
1893 during their marriage they had ten children many of which had died in their early years. This
essay will go over the basic review of Charles Darwins life and about how and why he created his
philosophy as well as how his beliefs came to be.

Charles Darwin defined intelligent design as the pseudoscientific view that "certain features of
the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process
such as natural selection. Basically the belief that no person or any intelligent being could have made
the universe. Charles was a very religious man, baptized in the Anglican church he took after his
mothers Unitarian way, even while running to school(usually a mile) if he felt he were to be late he
would pray God to help me, and I well remember that I attributed my success to the prayers and not
to my quick running, and marvelled how generally I was aided." His belief in Natural Theology began
at about the time he had began his study at Christs College, Cambridge, where he had been
mesmerized by Paleys view on Christianity and Natural Theology. He had left Cambridge and join
HMS Beagle, he was unpaid and joined as a naturalist; yet his religious beliefs failed to fade. This is
where he had slowly began to lose his faith, he had analyzed Genesis and doubted that any man could
possibly create the world in just seven days. He had also lost his faith during the time of which
Charles Lyell wrote the of his first chapters of Principles of Geology, this book questioned almost

everything in the Bible from Old Earth to Judgement Day.

He had come across his theory once his Daughter Anne Elizibeth Darwin had died at the age of
ten. This had altered his christian belief jurastically, assuming the fact that she may have been his
favorite child. She had died possibly of tuberculosis. The Theory of Evolution or Darwinian
Theory is by natural selection, organisms that possess heritable traits that enable them to better adapt
to their environment compared with other members of their species will be more likely to survive,
reproduce, and pass more of their genes on to the next generation. This meaning that like cells humans
came from one form of an animal and had genetically mutated into us being the alfa animal. His
theory consisted of multiple terms such as microevolution, DNA, mimicry, hypothesis, etc... All
scientific terms showing he had strictly converted to science and not religion. His book immediatly
started debate, arguments, and negative comments around the world. Although Darwin didnt care
about the veiws of the public, he only cared of his fellow scientists veiw. A few had shot at him with
painfully hurtful comments about how he had taken the wrong path, or I read with more pain than
pleasure. Luckily many scientists coming up had come to his defence tackling the critics and
supporting his theory; Thomas Huxley, Henry Bates, Ernst Haekel, John Lubbock and Alfred Russel
Wallace were just some of the people that had come to his aid in support of his theory. Darwins theory
had influenced modern science many ways, for one his theory still lives on today, and the fact that his
theory covered the fact that modern species evolved over a long period of time from previous family
members and their ancestors.
Intellignet design would possibly not be taught in school as one whole class in all because it goes
into religion and the teaching of a religion is not implied in public schools now, but, there is a
loophole to this since it is only a theory and not a religion there is a possibility that public schools
would allow the teaching of the Theory of Evolution. If this were being taught in school it would be
taught as any other class. Most likely as a history class due to the fact it would be best taught in
chronological order and this theory had evolutionized science in our modern day.
After living a long and quite wealthy life, Charles had died at the age of 73, after reading the
rearch he had seemed a broken man losing multiple children, some dying after only two weeks. He

was inteligent but let the fact that his childrens death and other peers get the best of him eventually
losing his faith in god and the creation of all things on the earth.
To extrapolate, Darwinism had positive and negitive effects on the church, public, scientific
beliefs of the people, and much more. He wanted to create something that made sense to him and the
others around him. He died in April 19, 1882 Downe United Kingdom. Winning a few awards before
he had died were the Royal Medal, Wollaston Medal, and the Copely Medal. His books were world
renound and had started a miniature revolution.
