Physics Exam 2

total 40(ANY 10x 4)

time 1.15H

1. An automobile traveling overtakes a 1.30-km long train traveling in the same direction on a track
parallel to the road. If the trains speed is how long it does take the car to pass it, and how far will
the car have travelled in this time? What are the results if the car and train are traveling in opposite
directions?
Does a car speedometer measure speed, velocity, or both? Explain.
2. When an object moves with constant velocity, does its average velocity during any time interval
differ from its instantaneous velocity at any instant? Explain.
A sports car moving at constant velocity travels 120m in 5.0 sec, If it then brakes and comes to a
stop in 4.0s, what is the magnitude of its acceleration?
3. Can an object have zero velocity and nonzero acceleration at the same time? Give examples.
At highway speeds, a particular automobile is capable of an acceleration of about 1.8 m/s 2. At this
rate, how long does it take to accelerate from 65KM/H to 120KM/H?
4. Can the velocity of an object be negative when its acceleration is positive? What about vice versa?
If yes, give examples in each case.
An unmarked police car traveling a constant 95KM/H is passed by a speeder traveling 135KM/H.
Precisely 1.00s after the speeder passes, the police officer steps on the accelerator; if the police
cars acceleration is 2.6 m/s2. How much time passes before the police car overtakes the speeder?
5. A car is behind a truck going on the highway. The cars driver looks for an opportunity to pass,
guessing that his car can accelerate at 6m/s2 and that he has to cover the 20-m length of the truck,
plus 10-m extra space at the rear of the truck and 10m more at the front of it. In the oncoming lane,
he sees a car approaching, probably at the 25m/s. He estimates that the car is about 500m away.
Should he attempt the pass? Give details.
6. Show that the time required for a projectile to reach its highest point is equal to the time for it to
return to its original height if air resistance is negligible.
A stone is thrown vertically upward with a speed of 15.5m/s from the edge of a cliff 75.0 m high
(a) How much later does it reach the bottom of the cliff?
(b) What is its speed just before hitting?
(c) What total distance did it travel?
7. Calculate equation for Maximum height and range of a projectile motion, when particle is projected
at angle .
A stone is dropped from the roof of a high building. A second stone is dropped 1.30s later. How far
apart are the stones when the second one has reached a speed of 12m/s?
8. A projectile has the least speed at what point in its path?
A projectile is fired with an initial speed of at an angle of 42.2 above the horizontal on a long flat
firing range. Determine (a) the maximum height reached by the projectile, (b) the total time in the
air, (c) the total horizontal distance covered (that is, the range), and (d) the speed of the projectile
1.50 s after firing.
9. A bullet fired from an airplane. Does it follow projectile path?
A ball is thrown horizontally from the roof of a building 7.5 m tall and lands 9.5 m from the base.
What was the balls initial speed?
10. Explain difference between speed and velocity.
