PARTS OF THE SENTENCE

SUBJECT

The subject of a sentence is a noun or pronoun that does, causes, or receives the action of the
verb. It has gender, number, and person.
A pronoun can replace a noun or another pronoun. You use pronouns like "he," "which," "none," and "you" to
make your sentences less cumbersome and less repetitive.
Grammarians classify pronouns into several types, including the personal pronoun, the demonstrative pronoun,
the interrogative pronoun, the indefinite pronoun, the relative pronoun, the reflexive pronoun, and the intensive
pronoun.

Subject pronouns function as the subject of a sentence or a clause. They are one of the easiest
pronouns to identify in a sentence.

Defining a Subject Pronoun


Pronouns are versatile words that can substitute for many nouns. The word pronoun comes
from the Latin word pronomen which breaks down onto pro and nomen. They mean in
place of and name.
The key benefits of pronouns is that they are useful in making our language not be so repetitive
and keeps it from bogging down. If it werent for pronouns, when you were talking about
someone, you would have to keep repeating their name over and over.
There are many types of pronouns - including the subject pronoun. Each type of pronoun can be
classified according to their function. For example, subject pronouns function as the subject of a
clause or sentence. The subject pronouns are:

OBJECT The direct object of a sentence recieves the action of the verb.
A. DIRECT OBJECT - A direct object answers the question who or what of the verb. It must come directly
after the verb.

B. INDIRECT OBJECT - An indirect object feceives the action of the verb indirectly.
C. OBJECT OF THE PREPOSITION - A prepositional phrase consists of a preposition and a noun or pronoun,
with or without adjectives. The noun or pronoun is the object of the preposition

PREDICATE The predicate is the portion of the sentence containing the verb. A predicate says something
about the subject of the sentence
The simple subject of a sentence is who or what the sentence is about.
Example 1: Brandon collects baseball cards.
Who is this sentence about? The sentence above is about Brandon.
Brandon is the simple subject of this sentence.
Example 2: The dog was bathed and fed.
What is this sentence about? The sentence above is about a dog.
Dog is the simple subject of this sentence.
The simple predicate of a sentence tells what the simple subject
does, is doing, did, has done, or will do.
Example 1: Melissa went to the doctor.
Went is the simple predicate. It tells what Melissa did.
Example 2: The actor has ridden a bike to the shooting because of the traffic.
Has ridden is the simple predicate. It tells what the actor did
