WHAT I LEARNED

U-2-5 Demonstrate knowledge and ability to apply the rights and


checks of medication administration to reduce risk of medication
error and ensure client safety
One significant learning experience in this NFDN 1002 course would
be knowing and applying the rights and checks in medication
administration as I prepare the medications and administering them in
the guided practice labs. This is to reduce the risk of medication error
and ensure client safety. In the guided practice labs, I was able to
master the rights (10 rights -right medication, patient, dose, route, time
and frequency, documentation, reason, refuse, patient education and
evaluation), and 3 med checks because of applying it every time I
practice preparing and administering the meds, it became a habit. So
practicing these have helped me a lot in the guided practice labs.

I have learned about the ten rights (right medication, patient, dose,
route, time and frequency, documentation, reason, refuse, patient
education and evaluation) and the 3 checks of medication (1st checkwhen medication is removed from drawer or fridge or cupboard,
including expiry date, comparing the med against medication
administration record or MAR; 2nd check before pouring or drawing
up the medication, comparing the med against the MAR; 3rd check
after pouring/drawing up and prior to putting away multi dose in
drawer/fridge/cupboard, comparing med against MAR, making sure
labeling the med before leaving the med cart). Knowledge on these
have helped me in the application of these things during the guided
practice labs.

Excellent integrates competency theory with other knowledge, skills


and attitudes so that it becomes seamless/ automatic as part of
everyday nursing practice.

RATING

I have achieved this competency theory and rated myself as excellent


because I have integrated this with other knowledge, skills and
attitudes regarding medication administration such as knowledge of
routes, skills on medication calculation, knowledge on purpose of
drugs and nursing implications, adhering to agency policy regarding
safety disposal of waste and needles, skills on assessing patients before
medication administration, having the right attitude when dealing with
the patient during medication administration such as providing
therapeutic communication during the simulated guided practice labs
and CIA.
I have practiced these a lot at home, open labs and at guided practice
labs that these have become a habit. Because of practice, I was not able
to forget the checks, rights, and ensuring medication safety when I was
doing my CIA and guided practice labs.

WHY IT WAS
MEANINGFUL /
SIGNIFICANT

It was meaningful because this made me understand the importance of


the checks, rights, ensuring safety on medication administration in the
future when I do my clinicals and nursing practice. Having the
knowledge, skills and attitude regarding medication administration has
helped me a lot to pass the CIA as well.

HOW I WILL APPLY


THIS LEARNING IN
NURSING PRACTICE

I will apply this learning (the knowledge and experience) in the current
and future nursing practice by always doing the medication checks,
rights, ensuring safety before medication administration when I do my
clinicals and when I become a nurse someday. I have to apply what I
have learned every time I handle medications so that I wont be
committing a medication error and I would always be ensuring safety
to the patient.
