BASIC PNEUMATIC

OPERATIONS
INSTRUCTED BY:

AIM
Identify the OR state and AND gate operations.
Sequential Operation of two Actuators.

OBJECTIVES
TO familiar with pneumatic equipment.
To understand the logic operations by using pneumatic systems.

EQUIPMENT
1. Single acting cylinder
2. Shuttle valves
3. 3/2 way push button spring return
4. AND gate
5. Limit switches
6. Double acting cylinders
7. Magnetic switches
8. Air distributers
9. 4/2 valves
10.Two position on/off switches
11.Air service unit

PROCEDURE
1. The given circuit diagrams were followed and completed and the all circuit by
using supplied equipments.
2. The operation behavior of the completed systems were observed.

LIFT AND TRANSFER

STATION
INSTRUCTED BY:

INTRODUCTION
Packages arrive at a transfer station, upon actuating a package register they are
lifted by cylinder A (lift cylinder) to a second level when this level is reached the
packages is pushed onto the roller track by cylinder B (transfer cylinder) once
cylinder B has fully extended cylinder A will retract (lower) only after cylinder
A has reached its initial (fully retracted) position will cylinder B retract.

EQUIPMENTS
1. 2 of double acting cylinder
2. 2 of 5/2 double solenoid actuated directional control value
3. 1 of Electrical push button with normally open contacts and momentary
operation
4. 4 of Electrical limit switch with normally open contacts
5. 1 of Pneumatic on/off slide value
6. 1of 24v DC power supply
7. Pneumatic tubing as required
8. Red and Blue electrical leads as required
PROCEDURE
1. A compressed air supply regulated to 2, 3 bar pressure was connected to the
inlet port of the on/off side valve.
2. A 24 dc power supply was connected to the electrical distribution manifold.
3. The air on/off side valve was actuated to the off position.
4. Ensured that the electrical power supply was switched off.
5. The pneumatic circuit diagram was built by connecting tubes between the
on/off valves, air distribution manifold, 5/2 solenoids operated valves and
the double acting cylinders.

6. Then the electrical diagram was followed and the leads were connected
between the red/blue manifolds, electrical push button, limit switches and
the solenoids on the 5/2 directional control valves.
7. The 24v DC power supply was switched off.
8. The air on/off valve was actuated to the on position.
9. The electrical push button was depressed and released and observed the
actions of the cylinders.
10.The power supply and air supply were switched off.

PRESS WITH
COUNTERBALANCE
INSTRUCTED BY:

INTRODUCTION
A large power press is to be raised and lowered by means of a double acting
hydraulic cylinder. Due to the heavy weight of the tool the cylinder will break
away on the down stroke. To overcome this problem a counterbalance valve is to
be used, this will allow the tool to be lowered in a controlled mode.

EQUIPMENTS
1. 1 of double acting cylinder
2. 1 of 4/2-way directional control valve
3. 1 of counterbalance valve
4. 1 of pressure relief valve
5. 1 of distribution manifold pressure tank
6. 1 of 4kg weight
7. Connection hoses as required

PROCEDURE

1. Ensured that the hydraulic power pack is switched off.

2. Connected the pressure feed and tank return hoses on the hydraulic power
pack to the pressure and tank manifolds in the tutor case.
3. The cylinder was removed from its horizontal mounting clips and fully
screwed it into the vertical mounting flange.

4. The 4kg weight was fitted to the top of the now vertical cylinder.
5. The circuit diagram was followed. The hoses ware connected between the
pressure manifold, 4/2 directional control valve, counter balance, cylinder
and the tank manifold.
6. The counterbalance was adjusted to its minimum pressure setting by turning
the adjuster anti clockwise until it stopped.
7. The assembled circuit was checked against the circuit diagram.
8. The cylinder was operated using the 4/2 directional control valve (DCV) to
the position.
9. The hydraulic power pack was started and the pressure relief valve was
regulated to a setting of 2.5 bars. (36psi)
10.The cylinder was operated up and down several times, then the hydraulics
power pack was switched off whilst the weight was lowered and observed.
11.The counterbalance valve was set to a higher setting by turning the adjuster
clockwise until it was clicks.
12.The hydraulics power pack was restarted and using the 4/2 DCV, extended
the cylinder.
13.The 4/2 DCV was operated to position and the counterbalance was adjusted
anticlockwise in increments until the weight began lower.
14.The cylinder up and down several times was operated.
15.The weight and return the cylinder was removed to the horizontal mounting
clips.
