Hokule‘a’s 1975 launch helped inspire a movement across the Pacific to construct “waa kaulua,” or voyaging canoes. A fleet of such double-hulled vessels has emerged across the Hawaiian islands, emulating the design and function of ancestral Polynesian sailing canoes. The fleet provides better access for a new generation of students looking to revive the traditional sailing and navigation practices that had nearly vanished prior to Hokule‘a.
