works vigilantly throughout the

books, reading and ultimately education. Through its endeavors
and more than 160 years of operation, the library has come to host
numerous book sales with its
next big book sale being held on
Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday,
Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in
the meeting room.
The purpose of the book sale
is to provide a dual service to the
community: to offer excellent
condition books at rock bottom
prices and to provide a conven-

their books, Kristin Rothenberger, circulation supervisor of the
library, said.
To organize such a large-scale
book sale, it takes many library
staff members, Friends of the Library members and volunteers.
They must first intake the books
donated to the sale in the circulation department and then sort
and box them into their respective categories. This team also
helps ensure the two-day sale
runs smoothly.

Fifteen years later, we continue to remember those lives lost on 9/11

Richard Donnelly
ceo of newspaper media group

ifteen years have passed since

the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on
New York City and Washington, D.C.
Thats hard to believe.
Its hard to believe that it was 15
years ago that this country changed
forever.
Its hard to believe that it was 15
years ago that so many innocent lives
were lost. Its hard to believe how
much our lives have changed in those
15 years how heightened security at
public places, especially airports, is
expected and openly accepted; how a
persons privacy is not always private;
how farewell and welcome home celebrations for servicemen and women
seem to be commonplace; and how,
sadly, the world is still dealing with
terror.
There are so many other examples
to mention of how our lives have
changed since that fateful day 15 years
ago. Here we are, a decade-and-a-half

later, with 9/11 as a memory for all of

us who lived it, and a history lesson
for those who didnt.
Fifteen years later, we should all be
proud of the way we are remembering
and honoring those who lost their
lives that day as well as their families,
and also the servicemen and women
and their families who so bravely
have volunteered to serve this country.
In addition to annual memorials put
on at the national level, local communities are playing a large part, too. Our
community, and others around us,
host 9/11 remembrances and memorials.
We should all be proud of ourselves
and our fellow citizens. But we should
not stop here just because we have

done well so far.

We should never forget what happened 15 years ago. We should always
pause and respect those who were
taken from us and those who fight for
our freedom.
And we should ensure that those
who werent alive 15 years ago, or were
too young to remember, are taught
about what happened that day, and
how it will continue to affect our lives
and theirs.
Teaching about 9/11 isnt a requirement in New Jersey public schools, although teaching about terrorism is,
so, by default, our children are learning about the worst attack on U.S. soil
in history. And thats important, because a majority of these students
werent alive when the attacks happened, and the ones who were probably dont remember. So teaching them
about the events of the not-so-distant
past is important, so that no one will
ever forget.

Writer: BOE needs
to remain non-partisan
As a resident of Moorestown, I find it
troubling that our Board of Education
president is posing in pictures with local
and non-local political candidates up for reelection.
My understanding is that our BOE is to
remain non-partisan. The quality of our
schools and the decision making of our
BOE should be in the best interest of our
children and never tied to politics.
I would hope in the future the members
of our BOE refrain from politicking and
focus on doing what is best for our kids,

leave the politics at the door.

Legalized sports betting would

not lead to game fixings
I would like to respond to your column
Sports betting deadfor now in regard
to legalized sports betting and the court upholding the Federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. As a former
athletic administrator of 34 years at the
college level, with the amount of money
bet on college and professional sports illegally, it is sad to see the legalization of
sports betting not take effect.
I totally disagree that the legalization

would lead to game fixings, which is what

this is all about.
School systems in Philadelphia, Detroit
and other cities look to raise money to help
our kids get a solid education and what do
the politicians do: raise taxes, or in
Philadelphias case, implement a soda tax.
Come on!
I have seen on television during the
NCAA Mens Basketball Tournament professional athletes, one say from North Carolina and one from Notre Dame (just using
the names of those schools), bragging they
bet each other money on whose school
would win. Is that not illegal gambling? Inplease see LETTERS, page 23

Trip to Cuba opens eyes

By BEATRICE and JOHN HILL
Special to The Sun
We went to Cuba in May, and
found exactly what we expected
old cars nursed for many decades,
carts being pulled by horses, pictures of Ch. But we also found,
as we often do, that our expectations were only a small part of
the reality of Cuba in 2016.
Yes, we did see a few carts
drawn by horses (even on fourlane
highways).
Yes,
we
did see many, many pictures of
Ch.
And there are indeed 53
Buicks and 57 Chevys in Cuba (a
lot of Chevys especially, for some
reason). We rode in a 51 Olds. The

driver was very proud of the fact

that his windshield wiper works,
and that he still has the original
cigarette lighter. He spoke at
some length about how he hates
the Communists and that he has
six family members in South Jersey Cherry Hill and Mt. Laurel.
But we also rode in a fairly new
Geely taxi (made in China), and
spent a lot of time in a brand new
Yutung bus (like all the tourist
buses, also made in China). There
were a lot of smoke-belching
Russian-made Ladas from the 70s
and 80s, and plenty of relatively
new Hyundais, Volkswagens,
Peugeots, and Toyotas. Nobody
takes pictures of them.
A thing we didnt expect to see
is a march against homophobia
(in essence, a gay pride march) in
downtown Havana. Two employees of the new U.S. embassy took
it all in with their families. (One
of them recognized Beatrices
Phillies hat, and revealed himself
as a fellow fan from Delaware).
The police watched languidly. The
paraders waited for Mariela Castro. Ms Castro is the head of

White Ribbon Campaign

I need to respond to an article
in a different publication about
the White Ribbon Campaign
launched in Moorestown. Why
couldn't the campaign be featured
without negativity and some
question the initiative's motives?
The only some quoted in the article was the mayor.
The White Ribbon Campaign

to keep residents informed about
our current water issues created
the Water Group on Jan. 22. This
page was created to answer everyone's
questions
regarding
Moorestown's
infrastructure
problems and chemicals in our
water. The purpose was to get out
information and facts. There are
774 members to the group.
Since the group started in January, the following is a list of documents that have been shared by
the Group:
June 24, 2013: Wolfgang Skacel Assistant Commissioner to
Moorestown Water Department

Sept. 24, 2013: NJDEP Chief

My point is that since the development of this group, awareness
and knowledge continue to be
made regarding the water in

dow, the most challenging aspect
for the workers and volunteers remains the limited space for sorting and storage.
The attendance of the book
sale has increased with each one
held as the word has spread about
our high quality offerings,
Rothenberger said. We offer a selection of over 3,000 books at this
book sale. Each book sale features
a brand new selection of titles.
Books being sold at the event,
which are all collected as donations from the librarys patrons,
range in category from fiction to
biographies, mysteries, history
books, cooking books, gardening
books, childrens stories, coffee
table books and more.
During the sale, books are sold

to local people, out-of-towners

who stop by to browse and even
book dealers. According to
Rothenberger, a popular use for
book sales is the purchase of inexpensive gifts for birthdays and
holidays.
In addition to this Septembers
book sale, three other big book
sales take place throughout the
year. There is one in March, June
and another that will take place
before the conclusion of this year
on Friday, Dec. 2 and Saturday,
Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Books are universal, timeless
and portable. There is no need for
Internet access, a computer, electricity or batteries, therefore not
only is it convenient, but it is
open to all income classes,
Rothenberger said. One can also
have the added benefit of storing
the book forever, or recycling it
into another book sale for someone elses enjoyment.

goal to be relished, and the key
is to be prepared. Answering
these questions can help you
figure that out.
1. How do you want to spend
your retirement?
If you havent started to
think about it yet, now is the
time to figure out how you
would like to spend your days
in retirement. Will you be travelling? Playing golf ? Volunteering your time? Maybe start
your own business? Having a
clear vision will assist in calculating the finances you will
need to live comfortably while
enjoying your days in retirement.
2. Have you created a retirement plan?
With advances in technology and medicine, Americans
are living longer. According to
the Social Security website, the
average life expectancy for a
man turning 65 today is 83, and
for a woman it is 85. This is an
optimal time to meet with a Financial Advisor who can assist
in building a diversified portfolio designed to help provide for
long term growth while keeping pace with inflation. Do not
forget to budget for increasing
health care costs.
3. Will you outlive your assets?
Social Security is your first
line of defense against outliving your savings as your pay-

ments will continue for the rest

of your life, however, you may
want to consider delaying taking payments until age 70 to receive 76% more than if you
collect at age 62. Paying off
your mortgage prior to retiring
will eliminate one of your
largest monthly bills and allow
you to tap into your equity in
cases of emergency. Talk to
your Advisor about what percent of your savings you can
withdraw annually during retirement.
Disciplined investors may be able to
gradually draw down their savings in a way that will likely
last as long as they live.
Achieving the dream of a
comfortable, secure retirement
can be much easier when you
plan your finances. Engage
your spouse to envision how
you each plan on spending
your later years and how you
will finance your activities.
Deciding together now will
make you both happier in the
long run.

To better identify this scam,
residents should become wary
when a caller identifies themselves with a common name or if
they are able to recite personal information about the call recipient
including email addresses, the
last four digits of a potential victims Social Security number and
his or her address. The scammers
also typically put a time restriction on the matter they are calling about, saying the victim only
has so many days or hours to resolve the matter involving payment.

fraudsters will normally have the

A more recent scam targeting
members of the town involves an
imposter from the diversified energy company Public Service Enterprise Group calling residents
and businesses reporting that if a
payment is not made immediately
their services will be terminated.
In a panic to avoid this outcome,
some residents and business have
fallen victim to making these payments.
The IRS never uses these tactics and encourages receivers of
these calls to contact them at
www.irs.gov, Lieber said. The
PSEG scam that we recently sent
out is targeted more toward businesses, as the proceeds from the
scam are potentially larger, as
their utility bills are bigger than
a residential bill.
To further protect oneself
against phone scams, the Federal
Trade Commission suggests call

hoosing a health care professional is difficult. Dentists are
no different. My name is Dr.
Kevin Atlee, and I would love to be
your dentist. I grew up in Marlton and
now practice right on Main Street in
Moorestown. I am trained and experienced in all phases of dentistry. From
simple fillings and cleanings, to complete smile makeovers and implants.
When people come to me for help, they
want ME to help them. People dont
like to be told, Go see the endodontist
for your root canal, the oral surgeon
to have your tooth taken out, and the
periodontist to get your implant, then
give me a call when youre done. My
job is to serve your needs. Now, if we
truly need a specialist, I know when to
make that call. And this area is full of
great specialists. But I enjoy so many
aspects of dentistry, I pretty much love
to do everything.
My staff and I constantly remodel
and upgrade the practice with one goal
in mind: to increase patient care by
making your dental treatment better,
more comfortable, and faster, using
the latest, cutting-edge techniques
and technologies. Weve tried really
hard to bring out the charm of being
located in an historic part of town, and
at the same time incorporate the very
