Introduction: Welcome to biology, the study of living

things (organism). In this class, the only nonliving things
that we will study are viruses and various elements of
ecosystems that impact life.
Instruction will be focused on the NC essential standards
for biology:
http://www.ncpublicschools.org/acre/standards/newstandards/. This will help ensure that you are wellprepared for the NC End-of-Course (EOC) test which will
comprise 25% of your grade for the semester.
The exam will be cumulative, which it is why it is
especially important that ALL notes and assignments are
kept in your notebook until the end of the year. Nothing
should be thrown away.

Classwork that is not completed during class, will need to

be finished for homework. If it is completed the next day,
it will receive a stamp from me. I will then go over all the
correct answers in class that day. Twice a quarter, I will
collect the stamped work, count the number of stamps,
and assign an individual assignments grade according to
the pre-determined rubric.
Late assignments:
Assignments that are collected by me for a grade can be
turned in late for a 5 point deduction per dayit will not
be accepted at all after 5 days. This excludes the long
term honors project which will have fixed, non-negotiable
due dates where late work will not be accepted.
Retests:
Students who score lower than 70% on a test may retest,
but must come to me for remediation during SMART lunch
or pride time first. Retests will be given 2 SMART lunches
after the grades are posted. The highest grade that can be
earned on a retest is a 70.
Biology is highly conceptual and to understand the concepts, you
must learn the terminology. I encourage each of you to focus on
the prefixes/suffixes/roots of words to help you better commit
them to memory. Also, thinking visually and viewing animations
will help you learn the information faster and retain is longer.
