Assessment Tools. Majority of meetings will be online with the exception of a few face to face
sessions. Evidence of professional growth and reflections will be developed in an ePortfolio and
collaborative conversations will be done online.
Course Objectives:
Participants will:
Improve teacher effectiveness
Promote the personal and professional well being of beginning teachers
Familiarize selves with Educational Directives, Pedagogy, Content, and Skills

interact with other course participants and/or course facilitators, to exchange ideas and share
experiences.
Apply information gained to enhance and improve instructional practices that will meet the
needs, as well as, challenge their students.
Develop and refine a professional growth plan with goals that enhance teacher quality and
student learning per Hawai'i Teacher Induction Program Standard 4, Hawai'i Teacher
Performance Standards and/or the Hawai'i Adapted Framework for Teaching.
Development of a portfolio that contains key course information, strategies designed and
implemented and participant reflections.
Learning Results Portfolio (PD Credit Requirement)
The format of the Learning Results Portfolio maybe completed online with uploads of additional
documents and other items that provide evidence of professional learning and student impact. A
template will be provided.

Contents will include:

Reflections and journal entries of the participant's response to content* covered during the
class sessions and the impact on their practice. *Content covered will include classroom
management, student engagement, setting professional goals, analysis of student work,
assessments & interventions, and other assessed needs of participants.
Activity worksheets that correspond to content covered during each class session, including
professional readings with reflections.
Documentations and reflection on the implementation of designated course activities (i.e.
Standards based lesson plans with observation notes using observation tool -by Mentor, and
student work samples with analysis).
Evidence from a minimum of 5 students regarding the implementation of learned content (i.e.
student reflections, student journals, student surveys or other student products).
Culminating reflection by the participant at the end of the course describing what was learned
and how the content impacted their instructional practices.

How this Online Course Works

This course is run with three main components:

NOTES on Course Schedule of Assignments and Session Topics

*Webex meeting days will be synchronous. Attendance to these online meeting times is a
required part of the course. Sessions will be held from 3-5pm. These sessions will introduce
teachers to new topics and start conversations around the guiding questions.
*All assignments are due prior to the subsequent online session meeting date. The first
assignment is due Nov 17, 2015 and the last assignment is due Feb 16, 2016.
* There is an ongoing requirement of asynchronous collaboration, listed as online posts in the
course schedule,. Post an answer to the weekly guiding questions and/or your reflection of the online
meeting to your blog and post the link in the Google+ community page for everyone in course to see
and comment on. You will also be asked to comment on 3 different colleagues posts during this time.

Where are your students? What are their
strengths? What are their challenges?

Complete the Mathematical Goal and My

Students sections of the Number Routine
planning guide. You might want to start by
asking yourself these questions:
What Mathematical Goal do you have in
mind for your students?
Where is this goal leading to?
What connections will students make to
previous content or upcoming content?
What are your students strengths? How
will you use these strengths to build
engagement in your Number Routine?
What are your students challenges?
How will you use this knowledge to help
build towards your Mathematical Goal?
Be sure to read through 2 colleagues planning
guides and provide reflective feedback.
Share and reflect on some of the wonderings
you have around various Number Routines and
your current recording practices in the
classroom. Include answers to questions similar
to these:
How do you currently record student
work? Refer to book Pg 20 #7.
How does the way you record students
thinking support engagement in the
mathematical practices? How does it
support and foster discourse?
Reflect on your current recording
practices, what are your strengths? What
are some areas you would like to work
on.
Create a goal for yourself, in regards to
recording student work, and describe how
you plan to achieve this goal through your
number routines (ie. pictures, class, video
etc)
Complete the Number Routine and Recording
sections of the Number Routine planning guide.
You might want to start by asking yourself these
questions:
What number routine am I planning to

do?

What is my planned number
string?
What strategies might
students use if given this
number string?
How will I record this
number talk?
What is important
that I capture in my
number talk?
o Counting Circle:
