INFORMATION
The oil viscosity and type (mineral/synthetic) to be used are determined by SEWEURODRIVE specifically for each order. This information is noted in the order
confirmation and on the gear unit's nameplate. Any deviation from these conditions
requires consultation with SEW-EURODRIVE.

INFORMATION
This means the gear unit must be filled with the correct oil grade and quantity before
startup. You may find the corresponding information on the nameplate of the gear unit.

In addition to the required viscosity, the oil must fulfill the following criteria:
Micro-pitting test according to FVA, FV no. 54/ I-IV, GFT class high, damage force
level >10
INFORMATION
Observe the operating temperature of the gear unit when specifying the oil change
intervals.
If required, a cooling system must be used or the oil change interval must be shortened
(see "Lubricant Change Intervals" in the "Helical and Bevel-Helical X.. Series Gear
Units operating instructions).
5.2.2
Permitted lubricants
INFORMATION
The standard for viscosity and oil grade is the type of oil that is specified by SEWEURODRIVE on the order (see order confirmation and nameplate).
Consult SEW-EURODRIVE if you use bio and food grade lubricants or polyglycol
oils.

Lubricant fill quantities for vertical gear units / M5 and M6 mounting positions
The specified oil quantity is a guide value. The precise value varies depending on the
gear ratio and the number of stages.
The required oil level depends on the mark on the oil sight glass, oil level glass and/or
the dipstick.
The following tables list the oil quantities for bath and pressure lubrication as well as
pressure lubrication with Drywell.

with splash lubrication:

The gear unit is equipped with an oil dipstick as standard for other mounting positions
and types of lubrication.

Oil drainage
18
The purpose of a gear unit breather is to relieve pressure that occurs from heating during
operation. The gear units are normally equipped with a high-quality breather filter with a
filter mesh of 2 m.
19
20
The gear unit is equipped with an oil drain plug as standard. As an option, an oil drain
valve is available (see page 511), which allows a drain pipe to be easily attached when
changing the gear unit oil.

A shaft end pump (direction-independent) supplies all bearing points and gearing
outside the oil sump with oil via piping.
14
The pump is mounted externally to the gear unit and is driven by the input shaft or
intermediate shaft of the gear unit, assuring high reliability of the pump.
15
Different pump sizes are available. Adequate flow rate for the specific application
depends on the following factors:
16
17
18
INFORMATION
19
Proper functioning of the shaft end pump is monitored via the connected pressure
switch. See page 127.
20
Consult SEW-EURODRIVE for selecting the suitable flow rate. For dimensions,
see page 419.
A minimum input speed is required for the shaft end pump to operate properly. If
you use variable input speeds (e.g. inverter-controlled drives) or if you intend to
change the input speed of a gear unit equipped with a shaft end pump, you must
contact SEW-EURODRIVE.
21
22
87
For helical gear units, the shaft end pump is located opposite the input shaft.
68178AXX
For X2K/X4K/X4T bevel-helical gear units, the shaft end pump is located opposite the
output shaft and driven by the intermediate shaft.
68183AXX
X3K / X3T
For X3K/X3T gear units, the shaft end pump is located on the output shaft side and
driven by the intermediate shaft.
68184AXX
88
5
1
A motor pump is used, for example, if the required speed of the shaft end pump (> 400
rpm) is not reached. It is also used in an inverter operation where a shaft end pump
cannot be used or can only be used under certain circumstances.
The motor pump is mounted externally to the gear unit and depends on the speed of the
gear unit.

Motor pumps ONP 005 to 060 are designed for gear unit sizes X.140 to X.320.
As standard, the motor pump is mounted directly onto the gear unit.
The motor pump can be delivered as a complete unit on a mounting frame but without
electrical connections and piping. It should be mounted in a low vibration location at a
maximum of 3 feet from the gear unit. In addition, the cooling system must be installed
at the same level as the gear unit or lower. If this is not possible, contact SEWEURODRIVE.
SEW-EURODRIVE recommends the following cable cross sections for connecting the

Fans contain optimized noise and flow geometry. Existing gear units in the field may be

simply desires to raise the thermal rating. The direction of rotation of the gear unit does
not influence the operation of the fan.

INFORMATION
For gear unit sizes X140, 160, 180, 200, 220, 240, 260, 290, 310, the water cooling
cartridge option contains two cartridges as standard. For sizes X150, 170, 190,
210, 230, 250, 270, 280, 300, 320, it contains one cartridge.
The maximum number of water cooling cartridges depends on the gear unit size,
mounting position, position of the end gear, and type of lubrication.
Not all combinations of accessories are possible. It depends upon the mounting
position and mounting surface. Consult SEW-EURODRIVE.

INFORMATION
Structure
The following information applies to gear units with splash lubrication. The cooling
system with a motor pump only cools the gear unit oil. It does not provide pressure
lubrication.
When installing a filter in the OWC cooling system, there should be sufficient height
for removing the filter element and the filter hood.
Plate Exchanger:
For gear unit sizes X140 to X170, a plate heat exchanger is used for oil supply
systems OWC 005/015/025.

INFORMATION

Optionally, the cooling system can be delivered as a complete unit on a mounting frame
but without electrical connections and piping. User must provide a low-vibration
installation that is no more than 3 feet from the gear unit. The cooling system should be
at the same level as the gear unit or lower. If this is not possible, contact SEWEURODRIVE.

this is not possible, contact SEW-EURODRIVE.
Notes on the
installation and
connection
The cooler must be installed in such a way that input and output air flow is not
obstructed. There should also be sufficient ventilation and protection against dirt. The
following procedures are required when connecting the cooling system:
Avoid a short circuit in the cooling circuit. The suction and pressure lines must be
installed on the gear unit as far apart as possible.
Do not reduce the recommended cable cross section, as shown on the next page.
Choose the correct wall thickness and material when selecting pipes, hoses and
screw fittings. Preferably, use composite material seals.
As standard, the oil-air cooling system is delivered in the design as illustrated below. The
connections of the cooling system are located on the lefthand side of the system. In
order to keep the cable lengths to the gear unit as short as possible, the suction and
pressure connection should be aligned towards the gear unit during installation. If
necessary, the connections can be moved to the other side. To do so, loosen the pump
head [1] and the register [2], rotate them by 180, and re-attach them.

INFORMATION
The temperatures specified refer to the average values of the permitted lubricants
based on the lubricant table (see page 73). In borderline cases, the permitted
temperature of the lubricant that is actually being used must be verified. When sizing
the motor, consider the increased starting torque needed at low temperatures. It may
be necessary to contact SEW-EURODRIVE.
