Typical Metering Capacitive Power Supply

There are two types of electricity meters:
Logic circuit fed with a switch mode power supply requiring X2
capacitors for EMI suppression.
Logic circuit fed with an AC series power supply requiring a capacitor
in series with the line before Zener diodes.
X2 capacitors used in AC series power supplies must not lose more than 10% of capacitance
during the expected life (e.g., 15 years) to ensure correct operation. If inappropriate X2
capacitors are chosen, corona discharge can reduce metallization and consequently
capacitance. Humidity will increase this effect. Not all X2 capacitors are appropriate for
outdoor environments.
