Respectful Skill Lesson Plan

Introduction
Today, we are going to talk about what it means to be RESPECTFUL and ways that we
can show RESPECT to others at school.
*What are we going to talk about today?
Ask students to define what it means to be RESPECTFUL. Shape their responses into
observable behaviors (i.e., if they say to be nice, ask for examples of being nice that
equate to observable skills such as waiting for their turn to talk, not laughing at others
responses and/or errors)
There are several ways to be RESPECTFUL to others. For example, we can:
*make good choices
*tell our side in polite ways
*follow adult directions without arguing
*treat each other as we would like to be treated
What are some ways we can be RESPECTFUL at school?
*Review above key behaviors and any other skills the students identify.
Demonstrate and Role Play
I am going to show you some ways to be RESPECTFUL and some ways to be
DISRESPECTFUL. I want you to watch me and see if you can tell if I am being
RESPECTFUL.
*Following each demonstration, ask the students if you were being
RESPECTFUL. Ask what you might do instead during non-examples.
Examples:
1. Yell out to a friend that is passing by during class.
2. Follow a teacher direction to be seated quietly.
3. Make fun of someone who makes a mistake while reading.
4. Listen to the teacher directions and then tell your side using a polite tone.
5. Ignore a friend who is talking during quiet class time.
Set up a few practice sessions with your students (based on key behaviors in your
classroom) or use certain students to role play appropriate examples of being
RESPECTFUL.
*Following each role play review with all students by asking, Was he/she being
RESPECTFUL? How do you know?

Review and Practice

Today we talked about being RESPECTFUL at school. There are lots of ways to be
RESPECTFUL.
*Ask students to identify key behaviors to being RESPECTFUL.
*Identify the RESPECT section of the matrix with students and read aloud or ask
for volunteers to read aloud the expectations in our school for RESPECT.
Throughout the day, we will see if you can show RESPECT. Your teachers will identify
times when you are being RESPECTFUL and times when you may not have been
RESPECTFUL.
*Identify RESPECT throughout the day and ask students what they were doing to
be RESPECTFUL. Perhaps use a small reward for those students. Be sure to
identify DISRESPECT and quickly use corrective actions with those students to
ensure that they realize they were not being RESPECTFUL.
Homework
Today, we talked about RESPECT and how important it is in our school. Your
homework tonight will deal with RESPECT and will be due when you first arrive in
home room tomorrow.
*Here are some options:
1. Write about a time when you were disrespectful or saw someone being
disrespectful. How would you change the situation now to ensure that everyone
was giving and receiving the appropriate amount of respect? Be prepared to share.
2. Write 2 paragraphs about being respectful at school and what that means to
you. Be prepared to share.
3. Write a short skit displaying respect at school and ask a friend to perform with
you.
4. Identify 3 example of respect and 3 examples of disrespect that you watched
on television tonight. How do you know they were or were not being respectful?
How would you change the disrespectful situations to ensure that everyone was
giving and receiving the appropriate amount of respect? Be prepared to share.
5. Write a letter to your teacher explaining how you will be respectful this year
and what that will mean to you as a student in this school. Be prepared to share.
