Studio II and Studio III- Syllabus


Course Description: Studio II& III courses are designed for the more advanced artist.
Advanced design principles such as line, texture, space, value, shapes, shading techniques and
perspective are taught. Work is achieved through the use of various drawing, painting, and
sculpting materials. This course is designed to enhance the students aesthetic values. It exposes
students to a variety of visual art activities, techniques and problems relating to the visual arts
world. This course fosters sound visual, emotional and aesthetic values necessary to continue
appreciating culture and beauty in the world. This course takes a much more in depth look at
application of the elements and principles of art.
Course Rationale: This course is designed to enhance the students aesthetic values. It exposes
students to a variety of drawing activities, techniques and problems relating to the visual arts
world. This course fosters sound visual, emotional and aesthetic values necessary to continue
appreciating culture and beauty in the world. In addition, drawing is an important base step in
many visual arts careers.

Projects will be based around the Elements and Principles of Art:


Line, Space, Value, Texture, Shape, Color, and Form.
Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, Movement, Pattern, Rhythm, Unity.
Learn about drawing, painting, and sculpting techniques for shading,
perspective, and style.
Students will be exposed to various drawing media: pencil, charcoal,
felt tip, pen and ink, etc.
Students will be exposed to various painting media: tempera,
acrylic, and watercolor.
Students will be exposed to various Three dimensional media
Intensive study of Drawing, Painting and Design-related vocabulary.
Exposure to work of various Artists, both past and present.

Homework/Notebooks:
1. Students are expected to have a Sketchbook (Blank paper, at least
9x12)
2. Every graded assignment will be posted on the grading website.
Sketchbook Friday
3. Homework will be assigned, based on a given theme at the
beginning of the week. Sketchbook assignments are due only if you
have class with me on a FRIDAY.
4. Sketchbooks will be collected periodically throughout the school
year and be graded as class participation.

Absences and Make-up Work:
1. It is the students responsibility to approach the teacher and obtain any
missed notes or assignment on the day they return to class.
2. Students will have the number of days they were absent, plus an
additional day to make up any work.
3. In situations of prolonged absences or extreme levels of missed work
the teacher will use discretion as to how the work will be made up.
This may require the student to come in after school.
Coarse Benchmarks:
1. Student shall be able to master tonal values using various drawing media.
2. Students shall be able to create three-dimensional effects using tonal values within a
composition.
3. Students shall be able to use texture as a drawing technique.
4. Students shall be able to identify basic shapes within a composition.
5. Student shall be able to create an aesthetically pleasant arrangement or elements of a
composition.
6. The student shall be able to master the shading technique of hatching, crosshatching and
stipple.
7. The student shall be able to understand the use of one point, 2 point, and 3 point perspective.
8. The student shall become knowledgeable about careers related to drawing, painting, and
3-dimensional art.
9. The student shall have an understanding of the process of ceramics.
10. The student shall have an understanding of coil, slab, and hand building with ceramics.
11. Student will familiarize themselves with professional grade artist materials, use them in a
professional manner.
12. Student will understand human anatomy, how bodies pose and move, infusing drawing with
feeling and emotion.
13. Student will understand color wheel, hue, value, intensity, warm and cool colors and how
they are used in painting.
14. Student will understand how to compose a critique both written and verbal.
15. Student will demonstrate an understanding of personal reflection, both literally and
figuratively.

Although art classes are an elective and fun, it is still a part of the academic school curriculum
and is intended to be taken seriously. Students are expected to be working from bell to bell. No
iPods, cell phones, other electronic devices, or foods are allowed inside the studio. Although
creativity is always encouraged when making art projects, inappropriate or obscene subject
matter is prohibited!!!
