Notes (key concepts, direct quotes, etc.)
My notes, commentary
Video: There is absolutely no evidence to
support the statement that were the
greatest country in the world. Were 7th in
literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in science, 49th
in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality,
3rd in median household income, 4th in
labor force, and number 4 in exports.

First of all I was impressed that he had all of

these facts off the top of his head, even if it
was scripted. Second, these facts really
surprise me because I sit here and wonder
what countries pass us in labor force, literacy,
and household income? It just goes to show
that we have a glorified version of our country
in our heads that are not argued enough.

Video: We lead the world in only 3

categories, number of incarcerated
citizens per capita, number of adults who
believe angels are real, and defense
spending, where we spend more than the
next 26 countries combined, 25 of whom
are allies.

WHY DO WE SPEND SO MUCH ON DEFENSE!?!?

Holy moly my belief is that yes we do need
to spend a lot to protect all the people in our
country, but how much does that take?
Certainly I dont feel that spending more than
the next 26 countries combined is just the right
amount. Maybe the next 15 countries? That
right there would save us a ton, which could
help go to our schools, infrastructure, etc.

Website: Shows the democratic ranking

of the United States has decreased from
rank 12 to rank 16, between 2008 and
2014.

I am honestly not surprised by this. I feel like

we might rank up a little in the upcoming years
with the passage of the LGBT act as well as the
ongoing push for gender equality as well as the
Black Lives Matters movements throughout the
country. As soon as we have these issues
situated, I think that we will increase in rank by
at least 3-5 spots.

So with these two medias showing that America really is not all its cracked up to be, could our
schooling maybe be part of the problem? Maybe if our standards of our math courses were the same as
Chinas math standards we would be 2nd or maybe 1st in that subject at least. Also, maybe if we did not
spend so much on defenses and military, or even global influence, we would be able to afford to buff up
our schools to make us a greater, more educated society and country. As we stand as a nation right
now, we are a democracy. However, with that democracy comes social diversity based on which party
we vote for in our elections. As a democracy, this cant be helped, but it can be tamed down a little bit.
Especially in todays world, there is such a large gap between what a republican is and what a democrat
is. However, these parties, the way they are, help create history. They show us what is and is not
working. At a social studies perspective, I dont think this democracy is bad the way it is. Of course it
could be refined to tailor a better school system so we can help educate students better, but it is at
least giving us history to learn from later in life.
