On Writing Well
The Classic Guide to Writing
Nonfiction
30th Anniversary Edition

William Zinsser
Expanded and updated, the 30th anniversary
edition of this favorite of both teachers and
students now contains three new chapters, and
many new passages that place new emphasis on
the writers voice and on such fundamental
values as intention, character, and making
decisions.
While still covering all of the basics, Zinsser
includes a new chapter entitled Enjoyment,
Fear, and Confidence, urging students to
convey zest for what they are writing about and
to overcome their anxieties by trusting their general intelligence. Another chapter, The
Tyranny of the Final Product, advises students not to visualize their completed article but
to focus on all the prior decisions of selection, organization, and tone that will eventually let
them know what their piece is about.
Not since Elements of Style has there been a guide to writing as well presented
and readable as this one. A love and respect for the language is evident on every
page.Library Journal

Writing Places

How to Writeand ThinkClearly

About Any Subject At All

The Life Journey of a Writer and

William Zinsser

Teacher

William Zinsser

Zinssers point of departure is that writing is a

powerful method of learning: Writing enables
us to find out what we knowand what we
dont knowabout whatever were trying to
learn.

In Writing Places Zinsser describes more than 50

years of writing and teaching in a series of
unusual locations, starting with his first job at
the legendary New York Herald Tribune and
including freelance stints in lonely apartments; a
decade as master of Branford College at Yale,
where his office was under a carillon; and
various quirky offices in New York, one of
which had a firepole. Each place taught him
valuable lessons that shaped the influential writer
and teacher he would become. Written with
humor, elegance, and vividly remembered detail about the men and women who kept
crossing his life, Writing Places will delight students who dream of writing their own
distinctive story.

An elegant exposition of the thesis that to

write is to learn . . . in the tradition of
Strunk and White, a model in its own
right.Kirkus Reviews

The Elements of Story

A Rhetoric for Writers

Jacques Barzun

Field Notes on Nonfiction Writing

Francis Flaherty

After a lifetime of writing and editing prose,

Jacques Barzun has set his view of the best ways
to improve ones style. His discussions of diction,
syntax, tone, meaning, composition, and revision
guide students through the technique of making
the written word clear and agreeable to read.

The bulk of writing books address grammar,

style, and other line-by-line topics. Francis
Flaherty believes that complex, story-level
concernshow to make a story move and how
to use description to buttress your themepose
equally common and far more formidable
problems for writers.
In the spirit of The Elements of Style, and drawn
from Flahertys long experience as an editor at
the New York Times, this highly entertaining book
shows how Times articles read the way they do,
presenting 50 secrets of successful narratives.
Sometimes, say things sideways, Flaherty writes,
the reader will be grateful. White is whitest on black, he observes, let contrast work for
you. Through these and other hard-won story-level insights, sprinkled with examples from
real stories and leavened with a good dose of newsroom memoir, The Elements of Story fills a
large gap in the long shelf of writing books.

The book includes exercises, model passages,

and hundreds of amusing examples of usage
gone wrong.
History teacher, writer, critic, Barzun
strikes at pedantry, malapropisms,
imprecision, misdirectionall the ways
language can go wrong on the pageand
emerges the victor.Booklist

Style and Voice in Writing

Ben Yagoda

Step-by-Step Techniques and

Exercises to Write Simply, Clearly,

In writing, style matters. Our favorite writers

often entertain, move, and inspire us less by
what they say than by how they say it. In The
Sound on the Page, acclaimed author, teacher, and
critic Ben Yagoda offers practical and incisive
help for students on developing and discovering
their own style and voice. This wonderfully rich
and readable book features interviews with
more than 40 of our most important authors
discussing their literary style, including Dave
Barry, Harold Bloom, Bill Bryson, Michael
Chabon, Jamaica Kincaid, and Anna Quindlen.

and Correctly
50th Anniversary Edition

Rudolf Flesch & A. H. Lass

Rudolf Fleschs philosophy is simple: writing
clearly and correctly doesnt have to be difficult.
With this handbook of practical methods and
wisdom, students can learn to express themselves
on paper.
The many examples and exercises included in
this book will guide them through the writing
process: getting started; organizing ideas;
connecting ideas; choosing the right tone;
making meaning clear; giving writing flair and punch; and using correct grammar.

Why should you assign a book on economics to
your writing students? Freakonomics is a rare mix
of revolutionary ideas and wonderful writing.
Complex issues and statistics are carefullybut

point clear. Freakonomics will demonstrate to
your students how to think and write analyticallyand how to examine issues from a variety

E. B.White

19271976

This classic collection of one of the greatest

essayists of our time has been an inspiration to
nonfiction writers since its publication, and continues to be used in both literature and writing
courses as an example of superb writing.

E. B.White
There are enough sparkling gems here to
show that White was one of the countrys
great literary treasures.New York Times

Some of the finest examples of contemporary, genuinely American prose. Whites

style incorporates eloquence without

Like his predecessors Thoreau and Twain,
Whites creative, humane, and graceful

Letters of E. B. White

New

Revised Edition

Anne Frank

Foreword by John Updike

The Book, The Life, The Afterlife

Francine Prose

Updated with newly released letters from 1976

to 1985, additional photographs, and a new
foreword by the late John Updike, this
unparalleled collection of letters now spans
nearly a century, from 1908 to 1985.

In June 1942, just weeks before she and her

family went into hiding from the Nazis, Anne
Frank received a diary for her thirteenth
birthday and began writing one of the most
compelling documents of modern history, The
Diary of a Young Girl.

Harper Perennial: 768 pp.; index.

2007 978-0-06-137459-3 pb, $19.95 ($23.50 Can.)

But the diary of Anne Frank, argues Francine

Prose, is as much a work of art as a historical
record. Few books have been as influential, and
Prose thoroughly investigates the diarys unique
afterlife: the obstacles and criticism Otto Frank
faced in publishing his daughters words; the
controversy surrounding the diarys Broadway and film adaptations; the claims of conspiracy
theorists who have cried fraud, and the scientific analysis that proved them wrong. Finally,
having assigned the book to her own students, Prose considers the rewards and challenges of
teaching the diary.

Autobiography

Truth & Beauty

A Friendship

Ann Patchett

Lucy Grealy
With an Afterword by Ann Patchett

Patchett paints an exquisite portrait of a

decades-long friendship with the critically
acclaimed writer Lucy Grealy. This is a tender
yet brutally honest book about loving a person
we cannot save. It is about loyalty, and about
being lifted up by the sheer effervescence of
someone who knew how to live life to the
fullest.
Students will be awestruck by Patchetts
beautiful and lyrical writing style. Truth &
Beauty has been picked as a freshman common
reader at Miami University and Clemson
Collegeand it continues to be adopted across
the curriculumfrom courses on writing to womens studies.
This frank, perceptive book can be read in many ways, not only as a story of
friendship but also as a young artists eye-opening introduction to the wider
world.New York Times
The reader mourns not only the loss of Lucy but the loss one feels when the
pages of an enthralling book begin to thin and, as if suddenly, there is no more
to read.Wall Street Journal

I spent five years of my life being treated

for cancer, but since then Ive spent fifteen
years being treated for nothing other than
looking different from everyone else. It
was the pain from that, from feeling ugly,
that I always viewed as the great tragedy
of my life. The fact that I had cancer
seemed minor in comparison. Lucy
Grealy
Vividly portraying the pain of peer rejection and
the guilty pleasures of wanting to be special,
Grealy captures with unique insight what it is like as a child and young adult to be torn
between two warring impulses: to feel that more than anything else we want to be loved for
who we are, while wishing desperately and secretly to be perfect.
This is a young womans first book, the story of her own life, and both book
and life are unforgettable.New York Times

The Paradox of Choice

Why More Is Less

Barry Schwartz

A Year of Food Life

Barbara Kingsolver

In accessible, engaging, and anecdotal prose,

Schwartz shows students how the dramatic
explosion in choice has paradoxically become a
problem instead of a solution, and how our
obsession with choice encourages us to seek that
which makes us feel worse.
In doing so, Schwartz, a Dorin Cartwright
Professor of Social Theory and Social Action at
Swarthmore College, also shows students how
to write a compelling and well-reasoned
argument.
Brilliant. . . . The case Schwartz makes
for a correlation between our emotional
state and what he calls the tyranny of choice is compelling, the implications
disturbing. . . . An insightful book.Christian Science Monitor

13

Renowned for such novels as The Bean Trees and

The Poisonwood Bible, Kingsolver has also written
several highly acclaimed works of nonfiction.
When Barbara Kingsolver and her family moved
from suburban Arizona to rural Appalachia, they
took on a new challenge: to spend a year on a
locally-produced diet.
Our highest shopping goal was to get our food
from so close to home, wed know the person
who grew it. Often that turned out to be
ourselves as we learned to produce what we
needed, starting with dirt, seeds, and enough knowledge to muddle through. Or starting
with baby animals, and enough sense to refrain from naming them.
Animal,Vegetable, Miracle follows Barbara and her family in their search for another way to
eat and live. Part memoir, part journalistic investigation, and complete with original recipes,
Animal,Vegetable, Miracle makes a passionate case for putting the kitchen back at the center of
family life, and diversified farms at the center of the American diet.

Essays from Now or Never

Barbara Kingsolver

Barbara Kingsolver

Whether Kingsolver is contemplating the Grand

Canyon, her vegetable garden, motherhood,
adolescence, genetic engineering, TV-watching,
the history of civil rights, or the future of a
nation founded on the best of all human
impulses, these essays are grounded in the
authors belief that our largest problems have
grown from the earths remotest corners as well
as our own backyards, and that answers may lie
in those places, too.

In this collection, Kingsolver brings a moral

vision and refreshing sense of humor to subjects
ranging from modern motherhood to the
history of private property to the suspended
citizenship of human beings in the Animal

Every morning, countless readers of the

morning papers bypass the front page, neglect
the sports section, and go directly to the
obituary page. Its not morbid curiosity (or not
just that) that motivates them. Legions of
obsessive fans turn to the obit page first because
it very often contains the most gripping and
best-told stories of the day.

The Portable Obituary examines revealing details

about how the deeds, intimate habits, and
lifestylesgood and badof famous people
ultimately influenced their mode of death and,
in due course, determined their role in history
and culture. Largo makes clear that life, famous
or not, can only be fully understood backwards.
The true cause of death is often the one omitted
detail of history, but in fact reveals the most
poignant snapshot of an individuals life.

In The Dead Beat, former Life magazine writer

and Esquire editor Marilyn Johnson makes a
smart and light-hearted survey of obituary
writing, unraveling the cult and culture of
obituaries to consider what our feelings about
deathand the way we write about ittell us about how we live.

America and the Age of Genocide

A Guide for People Who Love Books

Samantha Power

and for Those Who Want to Write

Drawing on classified cables, private papers,

modern killing fields, Samantha Power tells the
story of both American courage and indifference in the face of some of the worst massacres
of the 20th century.

Long before there were creative-writing

workshops and degrees, how did aspiring writers
learn to write? By reading the work of their
predecessors and contemporaries, says Francine
Prose.
A must for creative writing classes, Reading Like

indicates. Prose will take your students through
excerpts of many of the worlds greatest literary
works, pointing out the tricks of great writers
such as Dostoyevsky, Flaubert, Kafka, Austen,
Dickens, Woolf, and Chekhov. She cautions students to slow down and pay attention to
words, the raw material out of which literature is crafted.
The passages are . . . subtle and brilliant in their capture of human

Now back in print, in Whos Writing This?,

editor Daniel Halpern asks numerous writers to
muse briefly on the fictional persona behind
the scenes, the alter ego that accompanies
creation. Fifty-five well-known authorssuch
as Margaret Atwood, Pat Conroy, William Gass,
Czeslaw Milosz, James Michener, Joyce Carol
Oates, and Cynthia Oziickcontributed their
interpretations of this idea, along with a whimsical self-portrait. The essays are mostly one- to
two- page snapshots and vary widely as to
approach. Edward Gorey cleverly anagrams his
name into those of characters, such as Ogdred Weary. Susan Sontag recalls her longtime
disavowal of her work and finally comes to feel that the writer is me: not my double and
thus she is both Dr. Frankenstein and the monster.

Understanding Comics

Making Comics

The Invisible Art

Storytelling Secrets of Comics,

Scott McCloud

Manga, and Graphic Novels

Scott McCloud
Arguably the most important cartoonist
alive. Locust magazine

Every medium should be lucky enough

to have a taxonomist as brilliant as
McCloud. The follow-up to his pioneering
Understanding Comics . . . isnt really about
how to draw comics: its about how to
make drawings become a story and how
cartooning choices communicate meaning
to readers. (There are no rules, he says,
and here they are.)Publishers Weekly
(starred review)

In 1994 Scott McCloud tore down the wall

between high and low culture with Understanding Comics, a comic book about comics, linking
the medium to such diverse fields as media
theory, movie criticism, and web design. Since
its publication, Understanding Comics has found a
place in all sorts of college coursesfrom
composition and the art of narrative, to graphic
design.
With McCloud as their guide, students will
unravel the secrets of telling a storyand theyll
see how each step along the way is filled with possible pitfalls and artistic possibilities.
In one lucid, well-designed chapter after another, [McCloud] guides us through
the elements of comics style, and . . . how words combine with pictures to work
their singular magic. When the 215-page journey is finally over, most readers will
find it difficult to look at comics in quite the same way ever again.

The Journal of Joyce

Carol Oates

The Faith of a Writer

Joyce Carol Oates

19731982

Discussing subjects most important to the

narrative craft, Joyce Carol Oates touches on
topics such as inspiration, memory, self-criticism,
and the unique power of the unconscious.
Oates claims that inspiration and energy and
even genius are rarely enough to make art: for
prose fiction is also a craft, and craft must be
learned, whether by accident of design.

Joyce Carol Oates

The revealing and fascinating personal journals
of Joyce Carol Oates from one of the most
important and productive periods of her long
career create a portrait of the artist as a young
woman, fully engaged with her world and her
culture, a writer who paradoxically fancied
herself invisible but who was quickly
becoming one of the most respected, discussed,
and controversial figures in American letters.

Who better than Joyce Carol Oates . . . to

explicate the craft of writing?

Books,The Times Literary Supplement, and the New
York Times Book Review. Through these balanced
and illuminating essays, we see Oates at the top
of her form, engaged with forebears and
contemporaries, providing clues to her own
creative process.

This book offers practical advice on every aspect

of writing novels and short stories, including
plotting and narrative development, characterization and dialogue, sources of material,
planning an opening, roughing out chapters,
using suspense and emotional color, rewriting
and highlighting, and much more. Examples
from the works of outstanding writers, past and
present, illustrate each point.

The pervasive suspicion that serious

reading is becoming a marginal pursuit
contributes to the anxious, timid,
supportive tone of what passes for literary
criticism these days, and the timorousness
of the enterprise is part of what makes Oatess robust, painstaking, and
self-assured essays both exemplary and somewhat anomalous. . . .
Uncensored provides ample instruction and welcome provocation.

Living By Fiction

The Writing Life

Annie Dillard

Annie Dillard

The author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning

Pilgrim at Tinker Creek illuminates what the
writing process has been like for her.

Living By Fiction is written forand dedicated

topeople who love literature. Dealing with
writers such as Nabokov, Barth, Coover,
Pynchon, Borges, Garcia Mrquez, Beckett, and
Calvino, Dillard shows why fiction matters and
how it can reveal more of the modern world
and modern thinking than all the academic
sciences combined.

For nonwriters, it is a glimpse into the

trials and satisfactions of a life spent with
words. For writers, it is a warm, rambling,
conversation with a stimulating and
extraordinarily talented colleague.

PostSecret

Frank Warren is the founder and curator of the PostSecret Project. For the project, which
was started in October 2004, Warren asked people to write a secret they had never told
anyone on a handmade postcard and mail it to him. The response was overwhelming, and
the cards are astonishing in their honesty and creativity. Now spanning four volumes, these
cards each bear an intimate, powerful, or sometimes even chilling sentiment, told through
handmade illustrations, photographs, collages, and other creative means.

From Ordinary Lives

Writing teachers use these postcards as writing prompts. Theyve discovered that showing
their students a postcardand asking the to write a story about itworks well as both a
class and homework assignment.
They [the postcards] are mini-works of art. Some are heartbreaking, some are
hilarious, some are touching or thought-provoking or shocking or silly or
repulsive. All of them are riveting. . . . PostSecret seems to prove three (at least)
things: Lots of ordinary Americans are artistic, lots of them are poetic, and lots
of them have something to hide. USA Today

Few modern art forms are as misunderstood as

the craft of creating movie scripts, because the
collaborative nature of filmmaking and the
dominance of celebrity actors and directors
obscure the contributions of screenwriters. If
your students are eager to break into the
Hollywood, Tales from the Script will provide
insights into the wild, mysterious, and competitive world of screenwriting. More than 50
legendary screenwriters were exclusively
interviewed, including Shane Black (Lethal
Weapon), John Carpenter (Halloween), Frank
Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption), Nora
Ephron (When Harry Met Sally), William Goldman (The Princess Bride), David Hayter
(Watchmen), Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost), Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver), and Ron Shelton (Bull

the narratives of their celebrated films.

How to Shoot a Feature

Film for Under $10,000*

The Writer Got Screwed

(But Didnt Have To)

*And Not Go To Jail

A Screenwriters Guide to the

Legal and Business Practices of

Bret Stern

the Entertainment Industry

From the writer and director of the film festival

favorite R2PC (Road to Park City), comes this
comprehensive guide for every fledgling director
who has the passion but needs expert guidance
on making the leap from dreamer to filmmaker.

Brooke Wharton
A Hollywood entertainment and copyright
lawyer shows would-be screenwriters how to
protect their work, ensure that they get
compensated, find an agent, enter into a
contract, understand their contract, and avoid
getting screwed or sued along the way.

Humorous, practical and indispensable, How to

Shoot a Feature Film for Under $10,000 creates a
logical chronology and checklist for intrepid
filmmakers.
Assuming his readers have virtually no real
knowledge to navigating the path to Hollywood
nor the how-to smarts of making an actual film, Stern sticks to the basics. From budgeting
and script writing, to what equipment is used, from casting and catering to using the latest
in digital video and sound technology, from post production to film festivals, distribution
and beyond, Bret Stern will teach aspiring filmmakers everything they need to know about
making their first film.

industry.Elizabeth Daley, USC School

Selling Less of More

Writing for a television sitcom is a grueling art

some of the best scripts ever written.

Chris Anderson

Revised and Updated Edition

Chris Anderson reinvents the business book

with The Long Tail. In the most important
business book since The Tipping Point, Chris
Anderson shows how the future of commerce
and culture isnt in hits, the high-volume head
of a traditional demand curve, but in what used
to be regarded as missesthe endlessly long tail
of that same curve. He introduces a revolutionary concept in a way that is completely
understandable, making The Long Tail the perfect
example of what the new generation of business

Second Edition, Revised and

The Elements of Persuasion makes one thing clear:

telling of a good story. It is really that simple.
Stories sell. Storytelling is innate in the human

principles work together in real world events.
The book is written in a light, easy style, and is
formatted in alternating theoretical and practical chapters that are aimed at executives in
companies who need to sell their vision; marketing and sales professionals directly involved
in selling products and services; and designers, architects, and creative entrepreneurs who
need to explain their cutting-edge designs to the suits in a language both parties can
understand. In fact, this book is helpful to anyone who business depends on persuading

A Broom of Ones Own

Remembering the Sixties

Words on Writing, Housecleaning

Robert Stone

& Life

Nancy Peacock
The memoir of award-winning novelist Robert
Stone perfectly invokes the magical decade of
the 60s from the New York of Kline and
DeKooning, to the French Quarter in New
Orleans, to the psychedelic California of Ken
Kesey, and everything in between.
Erudite but blunt, both tender and
hard-boiled, the part-time tabloid hack
turned novelist knows how to stick a
sentence. He knows how to fly down the
high road of ideas, then suddenly crank
the steering wheel of style and take us for
a tough ride along the ditches. Hes great
on peopleon joining their abstract insides to their outsidesand hes even
better on places . . . good night, all you dreamy children of Aquarius. Thanks to
the wise recollections of Robert Stone, youve had your bedtime story now.

In these honest and witty essays, Peacock
explores the writing lifeoffering useful lessons
on subjects such as inspiration, craft, and
criticism as well as encouragement to all

An Informal History of the

Bill Bryson

English Language in United States

Bill Bryson
With dazzling wit and astonishing insight, Bill
Bryson explores the remarkable history,
eccentricities, resilience and sheer fun of the
English language.

A witty and irreverent scamper through

the vocabulary of American English.
San Francisco Chronicle
Bryson offers a playfully anecdotal
account of the etymology of distinctive
words and phrases that help to create a
distinctly American English.Publishers
Weekly

Bryson traces the English language from

the Neanderthal man of 30,000 years ago
to the present. Interestingly, he contrasts
the language as it developed simultaneously in various locations. He also
presents examples of the evolution of
words and their spellings. The book is
well researched and informative; the

story of how thousands of very different
languages have evolved from a single, original
source in a natural process similar to biological
evolution.

This delightful reference skewers commonly
accepted word origin mythsrevealing the true
story of a word or phrases origin.
Whenever I look up the origins of idioms,
they seem to derive from some awful,
brutish practice of the 18th-century

from Michael Quinions fascinating book
that they sometimes come from somewhere else!Lynne Truss, author of Eats,

By Jove!

Born to Kvetch

Brush Up Your Mythology

Yiddish Language and Culture in

Michael Macrone

All of Its Moods

Michael Wex
Both an entertaining handbook to
classical mythology and a revealing
catalog of divinely inspired word origins.
Booknews

Born to Kvetch is a smart and witty portrait of

Yiddish and its relationship to both Jewish
culture and American life.
Wex explains Yiddish culture by unraveling, in great detail, the words and phrases
used by Yiddish speakers in the various
areas of their lives. In doing so, he draws
deeply on the complex traditional and
religious roots of Jewish culture while
engaging in what can only be called
national psychobiography. The results are
a joy to behold.Washington Post

The Story of Yiddish

Just Say Nu
Yiddish for Every Occasion (When

How a Mish-mosh of Languages

English Just Wont Do)

Saved the Jews

Michael Wex

Neal Karlen

With verve, lan, and something only a

non-Yiddish speaker would call chutzpah,
Michael Wex returns to the linguistic
mother lode that yielded Born to Kvetch
[and] gets down to the everyday business
of putting Yiddish to use.New York Times

That Yiddish is a mirror of Jewish history,

thought, and practicefor better and worse
underlies Neal Karlens narrative, as he charts
Yiddish from its beginnings as a minor dialect in
11th century France and Italy, to the time before
World War II when 13 million spoke the
language; and on to unlikely resuscitation and
electrifying 21st century renaissance.

Spanglish

The Making of a New American

The Story and Science of the

Reading Brain

Ilan Stavans

Maryanne Wolf

Complete with over 6,000 entries, this

marvelous linguistic guide by award winning
author Ilan Stavans explains why the emergence
of Spanglish is a viable and important marker of
the Latino communitys influence on American
culture.

A preeminent researcher known for her work in

dyslexia offers an eloquent book about how the
brain learned to read and in the process changed
the way we as humans think.
As the author explains, human beings were
never born to read; we invented reading only a
few thousand years ago. And with this invention,
we changed the very organization of our brain,
which in turn expanded the ways we were able
to think, which altered the intellectual evolution
of our species.

Using a vivid and elegant multidisciplinary

approach in the tradition of Jared Diamond or John McWhorter, she explains both the
far-reaching effect that written language has had on human development as well as the
extraordinarily complex cognitive and perceptual feat of learning to read and write.

The Language Instinct

Words That Work

Its Not What You Say, Its What

How the Mind Creates Language

People Hear

Steven Pinker

Revised, Updated Edition

Steven Pinker, well-known for his revolutionary

theory of how children acquire language, lucidly
explains everything you always wanted to know
about language: how it works, how children
learn it, how it changes, how the brain
computes it, and how it evolves.

Frank Luntz
Words are importantevery writer knows that.
The power of ones word choice is demonstrated
most aptly in Words That Work. Dr. Frank Luntz,
language architect and public opinion guru, not
only raises the curtain on the craft of effective
language, but also offers priceless insight on how
to find and use the right words to get what you
want out of life. Dr. Luntz teaches about the
phenomenon of transforming mere words into
an effective arsenal for the war of perception we
all wage each and every day.
Words That Work deserves an attentive read.
Mr. Luntz offers a fair amount of good advice to anyone who must communicate publiclymost important, be the message. By this he means that if you
want to talk the talk and be believed, you must walk the walk which is to say,
you must mean what you say and act on it. Integrity sells. Wall Street Journal

The new editions P.S. section contains Pinkers

most recent thoughts on language and cognitive
development, as well updates on each chapter,
including the ongoing debate between Pinker
and linguist Noam Chomsky, the natural history
of language development in the news, and over
80 books and resources that Pinker recommends.
A brilliant, witty, and altogether satisfying book.New York Review of Books

A Splendor of Letters

Patience & Fortitude

The Permanence of Books in an

Determined Book Collectors,

Dealers, and Librarians Go About

Nicholas A. Basbanes

the Quixotic Task of Preserving a

Legacy

Basbanes offers a consideration of the many

pressing issues that surround the role of books in
contemporary society, such as the willful
destruction of books and libraries in Sarajevo,
Tibet, and Cambodia, and the spirited efforts to
restore them.
Basbanes always presents literature in
terms of its universal human relevance.
It would be hard to imagine anyone who
more genuinely grasps the infinite
meaning of literature, which, like a
message in a bottle tossed on the waves
of time, continues a dialogue of hope between writers past, present and future.
