The PBPK model introduces a

new scientific approach to
determine time-related safe
human exposure limits.

PBPK is specified in NFPA

2001 (Ed. 2004) and ISO 14520
(Ed. 2006).

At the concentrations of use

NAF S 125 allows a safe
human exposure time of 5
minutes.

The PBPK (Physiologically Based PharmacoKinetic) model is a scientific approach for determining safe
human exposure limits, both with respect to concentration level and exposure time. Its importance is
that it adds the time dimension to the safe exposure criteria, a dimension that before had not been
taken into consideration. Prior to the PBPK model, safe human exposure limits were based exclusively
on exposure testing using dogs. Applying the dog exposure test results to humans does not take
into account the physiological differences between dogs and humans.

** For FK-5-1-12 the PBPK model is not available (NFPA 2001:2004).

Concentrations (NFPA 2001 Ed. 2004)
Extinguishing concentrations:
Class A/C* Hazards (wood crib, ABS,
PMMA e PP): 6,7 % v/v - 364 g/m @ 20C
Class B Hazards (heptane): 8.7 % v/v - 483
g/m @ 20C

Design concentrations:
Class A/C* Hazards: 8,0% v/v - 441 g/m @
20C
Class B Hazards: 11,3% v/v - 645 g/m @
20C
* Typical Class A/C Hazards: computer rooms, control rooms,
telecommunication facilities, archives, banks, museums.

NAF S 125 UL Tested ISO 14520 Class A/C Design Concentration

The resulting design concentrations of 8.7% can be safely used in

normally occupied areas.

NAF S 125 Engineered Systems Are UL Listed

tested in accordance with UL 2166, standard for halocarbon clean agent
extinguishing system units.

9 Agent testing determines the extinguishing concentrations.

9Nozzle area coverage determines the maximum coverage of nozzles, the
minimum average nozzle pressure and the minimum working temperature of
the system.
9Validation of flow calculation method validates the accuracy of the flow
calculation program, which is one of the most critical aspects of systems
design.
9 System component testing tests the reliability of each component
(valves, hoses, cylinders, check valves, actuators, nozzles, etc.).
9 Agent component recognition confirms the quality and origin of the
extinguishing agent.
9Review of manuals UL reviews the information and data contained in the
design and installation manuals to make that systems are properly designed
and installed.

NAF S 125 Nozzle Area Coverage Testing

Maximum height: heptane cans and pan

Minimum height: heptane cans

Nozzle area coverage testing: determines also the minimum nozzle

pressure and working temperature of the system

NAF S 125 SHT 3.72, UL Validated Flow Calculation Program

The SHT 3.72 flow calculation program for NAF S 125 engineered systems has been
developed in conjunction with Hughes Associates, Inc. (USA). The UL validation
testing includes pre-witnessed and blind discharge tests, the acquisition of
pressures and temperatures along the pipes and at the nozzles and the mass of agent
discharged by each nozzle.
