Rabbis bar and batmitzvah revolution

A GROUNDBREAKING new
Duke of Edinburgh-style
awards scheme aimed at
broadening the experiences
of bar and batmitzvah youngsters was launched this week.
More than 100 rabbis were introduced to the ambitious new
programme at the Chief Rabbis
High Holy Days conference on
Tuesday. It will span three years
in the build up to the coming-ofage ceremony. Developed by
the Chief Rabbi in partnership
with youth group Tribe, it aims
to ensure that the special milestone extends well beyond a
single synagogue service and
party to become a real lifecycle event that has a lasting
impact on the participants
Jewish identity.
Thousands of 12 and 13year-olds will take part in
components including volunteering inside or outside
the community, engaging in
Jewish learning and organising an activity at the community where the ceremony will
take part with points available for each segment.
Year seven pupils will need to

collect enough points for the
bronze award, with year eights
aiming for silver and year nines
going for gold.
Tribes David Collins said: This
wont be one-size-fits all. People
will be able to tailor the programme in consultation with their
rabbi to make up the required
points. Thats the beauty behind
what were creating. Were not
going to be proscriptive. Its
about getting a balance between
minimum standards
and
allowing
each person to
maximise what
they are passionate about.

Ephraim Mirvis said: There are
people for whom a barmitzvah
is about a big party. Theyll do
the minimum amount on the
Jewish side. Hopefully this will
tip the balance the other way.
It will mean its a real lifecycle event that has a true impact on Jewish identity. If theres
a party as well thats nice, but its
not the focus. Instead of just
turning up on the day to do
their bit youngsters will have,
for example, raised money for
charity, learnt modern Hebrew
to a certain level, created a
chessed project or perhaps visited an old-age home. Becoming a Jewish adult means being
responsible for many things, so
thats we are encouraging.
The plans have been developed by a consultation group
including shul chairs, rabbis
and rebbitizens, teachers from
Jewish schools and bar and
batmitzvah tutors. While Tribe
will put forward components,
rabbis will also be encouraged to develop creative
ideas. It is hoped the
scheme will encourage
wider participation, with a
component on researching family history as part
of the silver award.

RUDD BACKS CALL TO OUTLAW TERROR FLAGS
Home Secretary Amber Rudd addresses Emunahs annual dinner
AMBER RUDD was guest of honour at British

Emunahs annual dinner, at which she pledged
to continue the path set by her predecessor
in terms of defending the security of British
Jewry, writes Justin Cohen.
After flags of the Hezbollah terror group
were again openly displayed at the annual
Al Quds rally in central London over the
summer, she said: I hope by speaking out
plainly that its unacceptable, people will
feel more confident about reporting it. If
they report it, we can take action.
After Theresa May indicated that displaying
the flag could be an offence, arrests were
made last year during the visit of Israeli Prime
Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but no charges
were forthcoming. The sticking point appears
to be the fact that while Hezbollahs military
wing is proscribed, its political wing is not
although both share the same yellow flag.
Jewish News and the Zionist Federation
launched a campaign in July backed by more
than 1,600 people urging May and Rudd to
make it clear that any further public display of
the flag would be treated as a criminal offence.
Rudd hailed Mays efforts at the Home
Office in speaking out against anti-Semitism
and in backing that up with millions of
pounds of funds for security measures at
communal buildings.
Making it a priority is one of the things
we can do. Apart from continuing the very
good work shes done, the hate crime action
plan I unveiled had additional proposals
for making sure people who are victims of
antiSemitism or any sort of hate crime have
somewhere to go to and has continued
to raise the profile of how important it is
to address it.
She also had an unequivocal message for
those peddling hate on social media, saying:
Its unacceptable on the internet just as it is
on the streets.
Referring to an article she wrote in Jewish
News days after her appointment, Rudd earlier told the 350 guests at the Guildhall that
she acknowledged that Britain wasnt immune to the evils of anti-Semitism.
She added: I know there is much work to
be done. I promise that I will continue to work
with law enforcement partners and with the
Jewish community to ensure your safety and
security. Anti-Semitism will be challenged
without exemption wherever we find it. The
government will never waiver.
The home secretary who visited Israel with
Conservative Friends of Israel in 2012
recalled the chilling experience of seeing
the remains of rockets fired into Sderot.
Pledging that the UK will stand steadfastly
alongside Israel and continue to develop
burgeoning bilateral ties on trade, science

and security, she added: When Israel is under
attack we will support its right to self-defence.
We will work with Israel and the Palestinians to
help bring about the lasting and peaceful twostate solution that all peoples of the region
desire and deserve.
Addressing the dinner, actress Maureen Lipman said Rudds support was much needed
as she launched a fresh attack on Jeremy Corbyns Labour. We have a Labour Party that
doesnt represent me and doesnt represent
many of those who supported it for years.
She drew applause when she referred to
the boundary change proposals that could
see the Labour leaders Islington seat vanish.
Guests were told about Emunahs work in
Israel with 12,000 orphaned, abused and at
risk children. Rudd heaped praise on the
charity for offering a helping hand in times
of darkness and described British Emunah
chairman Hilary Pearlman and her team as
exemplifying the very essence of the Jewish
community in terms of education, commitment, philanthropy.
Sara Kulp, 21, a graduate of the charitys
Afula residential home who now works as a
dispatcher for Magen David Adom, told how
she received help catching up on her studies
and that one of her siblings benefited from
speech therapy after their mother died. She
said: I am where I am today because Emunah was there for me.
The most moving moments of the evening
came in the appeal video, which told the
story of David, who was also helped by Afula
after he witnessed his father killing his
mother, aged just five.
Councils warned over Israel boycotts World Vision quits Gaza operations
COMMUNITIES SECRETARY
Sajid Javid has threatened to
take investment decisions away
from local councils if they choose
to boycott Israel.
The stark warning comes amid
new government guidance aimed
at preventing local authorities
deciding against purchases from
companies or countries on ideological grounds, amid growing
recognition that unions are urging
a boycott of Israel.
Javid, who was business secretary under former Prime Minister David Cameron, said:
Wildcat boycotts and sanctions
have no place in these crucial [investment] decisions, and I will
not hesitate to act if any council
decides to introduce restrictions

that are not in line with UK foreign and defence policy.
His department warned that
any council found flouting these
rules could face action, including
the possibility of having power
over these investment decisions
taken away, with central government stepping in instead.
Unions have long supported a
boycott of Israel: the largest, Unison, first voted to do so 10 years
ago, in June 2007. Since then,
several councils have opted to do
so, including two in Wales, four in
Scotland and one in Northern
Ireland, but legal challenges have
reversed many decisions.
Companies to have been tar-
geted include security contractor G4S, technology giant

Hewlett Packard and Eden
Springs, which provides water
coolers and coffee machines.
This February, the government
announced local councils, public
bodies and student unions must
refrain from boycotting Israeli
goods, a move which Labour
leader Jeremy Corbyn said was
an attack on local democracy.
Javid addressed religious
leaders at the Chief Rabbis Conference on Monday, paying tribute to interfaith work, including
Rabbi Natan Levys initiative to
bring together Jewish, Muslim
and Christian girls to learn computer coding together.

aid group World Vision suspended its operations in Gaza
following Israels accusations
last month that the local director had funneled funds to
Hamas.
World Vision provided contractors with a letter in Arabic
saying the group could not
pay them because Israel had
frozen its bank accounts and
money could not be transferred to Gaza.
Approximately 120 contractors had been let go, according to Reuters, but a World
Vision spokesman only confirmed that operations were
suspended, not that the contractors had been laid off.
Due to the seriousness of
the allegations laid against
Mohammad El-Halabi, World
Vision has suspended operations in Gaza, the group said,
referring to the Gaza branch di-

review, including an externally
conducted forensic audit.
World Vision is one of the
largest charitable and humanitarian aid organisations in the
world. It receives support primarily from the United Nations
and western governments.
Israels Shin Bet security service said last month that El-Halabi was a Hamas member who
infiltrated the American aid

group to divert tens of millions
of dollars to the Gaza-based
terrorist organisation.
According to the Shin Bet,
some of the money went to pay
the salaries of Hamas terrorists
and, in some cases, senior
Hamas terrorists took large
sums of money for their own
personal use.
In addition, El-Halabi is said
to have regularly transferred to
Hamas equipment that he had
ordered on behalf of World Vision for agricultural aid. Other
humanitarian aid, including
thousands of packages of food,
basic commodities and medical
supplies, allegedly went to
Hamas terrorists and their families instead of needy families.
Israel arrested El-Halabi in
June and accused him in August of sending tens of millions
of dollars to Hamas, but he has
maintained his innocence.
Muslim community wants to emulate JW3 model

THE BUSINESSMAN and philanthropist Lloyd Dorfman has
described the Jewish Community
Centre for London, JW3, as a
dramatic success and says he has
had discussions with UK Muslim
business leaders who have ambitions to launch something similar within their community.
Dorfman, who was appointed
CBE in 2008 for his services to
business and charity, was in conversation with James Harding,
the BBCs director of news and
current affairs, at a special

fundraising business breakfast at
JW3 on Tuesday.
Nearly 90 London businessmen
and women some of whom were
from the Muslim community
gathered to hear Dorfman, who is
a JW3 trustee and founder and
president of currency exchange
company Travelex. He is chairman
and majority shareholder of two
other firms, The Office Group and
Doddle, and is chairman of both
the Princes Trust and the Princes
Trust International.
Dorfman, who acknowledged
he was actively involved in the
campaign for Britain to remain in
the EU, said that perhaps in the
bid to forge a trade federation
within it, the tectonic plates have
moved on.
Now Britain had decided to
vote to leave, he said, we have
to pick ourselves up and deal
with the outcome. And sometimes big change can create big
opportunity.

All of Israel is praying for Shimon

SHIMON PERES was responsive when
briefly taken off medications keeping
him in a medically induced coma, his
doctor said last night, one day after the
former Israeli president suffered a stroke.
Peres remains sedated and on life support. He is considered in stable but serious condition, with some improvement.
Dr Rafi Walden, Peres personal doctor as well as his son-in-law, said yesterday morning in a briefing that the family
was happy to see that when there was
a pause in anesthetic drugs, we realised
he was responsive and probably attentive to what we tell him.
Peres is being kept sedated so that he
does not overexert himself, said Walden,
a surgeon. It is not yet known how much
damage the brain sustained and what
Peres recovery will look like.
We call on all of Israel to join us in
hoping and praying for his recovery,
Walden said.
Peres, 93, was taken to Sheba Medical Centre in Tel HaShomer near Tel
Aviv on Tuesday, after telling his doctor
that he felt weak. Peres had a pacemaker fitted a week earlier. He was diagnosed in July with atrial fibrillation, an
irregular heart rhythm.
In January, Peres had a heart attack
and then cardiac angioplasty to open a
blocked artery. He was hospitalised twice
more with chest pains.
Peres office first said in a statement
on Tuesday evening that Peres was
stable and fully conscious.
The office later announced that Peres

doctors decided to sedate him and put
him on a respirator as he undergoes
medical treatment.
In a statement in front of the medical
centre on Tuesday night, Peres son,
Chemi, acknowledged to reporters that
in the coming hours, we will have to
make decisions, and said the family was
gathering at the hospital. Peres has two
other children: a son, Yoni, and a daughter, Tzvia.
Peres, who retired as Israels ninth president in 2014 after more than half a century in public life, including a stint as
prime minister, won the 1994 Nobel
Peace Prize with the late Israeli Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin and the late Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat.
He has been very active since retiring
as president, especially in his work with
the Peres Centre for Peace, which he
founded.
Hours before his stroke, Peres posted
a nearly one-minute video on his Facebook page calling on the Israeli public to
buy more products made in Israel.
He wrote as his status: What is a blueand-white product? For me, it is Israeli
salad, our wonderful fruits, our excellent
industry and our developed high-tech
sector. I am proud of Israeli industry.
In comments under the post, Israeli
Facebook followers praised Peres and
called for his speedy recovery.
Mayor to visit American shuls

House chief of staff to his own
shul, Anshe Shalom, this weekend as part of his five-day visit
to New York, Chicago and
Montreal, which begins today.
He will also meet hundreds of
young people of different faiths
at Chicagos oldest synagogue,
Temple Shalom, where he will
hear from The Inter-Faith Youth
Core about the organisations
mission to make interfaith cooperation a social norm. Khan will
use the meeting to reinforce his
plans to work to build true social integration in London.

JEREMY CORBYNs director of strategy asked for
a Hebrew greeting to be removed from the Labour
leaders Passover message, it has been claimed.
The Community Security Trusts Dave Rich
pointed the finger at Seamas Milne in an article for
The New York Times.
In a claim that has been strenuously denied by
the leaders office, he said Milne asked for Chag
Kasher VeSameach which means happy and
kosher festival to be taken out of the message
published in Jewish News in April because he felt
the use of the Hebrew implied support for Zionism. He added that the director of strategy and
communications was overruled.
It came as Joshua Simons, who worked with Corbyn for six months, said he was the staffer asked to
remove the Hebrew but did not disclose by whom.
A spokesman for Corbyn said: The allegation
that Seamas Milne or any other Jeremy Corbyn aide
asked for the Hebrew Passover greeting to be
removed from the Labour leaders Passover message earlier this year is categorically untrue.

Two Labour councillors probed over Zio posts

SOCIAL MEDIA posts apparently from two
Labour councillors, including a link to a David
Duke video alleging Zionist control of politics
and the media, have been referred to the
partys compliance unit.
Zafar Iqbal, who is an MBE and represents the
South Yardley ward in Birmingham, posted a link
to a video entitled CNN Goldman Sachs and
the Zio Matrix the day after the outbreak of
the Gaza conflict in 2014. Its description says:
This video reveals how the Zionist Matrix of
Power controls media, politics and banking.
Another Birmigham councillor, Basharat
Dad, is also alleged to have posted a link to

Yad Vashem to see that the last
time Jews were forcibly transported it was not to Israel but

Expressing disappointment
at the response, Labour Friends
of Israels Joan Ryan said such
a visit should have been a priority in light of Corbyns record
on the Middle East.

said: He has visited Israel on
more than a dozen occasions
and will do so again. He just

Jewish Labour donor suspended

A PROMINENT LABOUR donor
was suspended by the party this
week after outspoken attacks
on Jeremy Corbyn.
Michael Foster was barred
after writing a newspaper article in which he claimed to have
been smeared as a Jewish
donor to the party and compared Corbyns allies to Hitlers
stormtroopers.
The suspension means Foster
will be unable to take part in
the leadership contest between
Corbyn and challenger Owen
Smith.
Foster wrote a highly critical
column in the Mail On Sunday
after the High Court ruled
against his attempt to stop
Labour from allowing Corbyn to
automatically stand for re-election as leader.
In the article on 14 August,
he highlighted a divisive, aggressive holier-than-thou cadre
of hard-Left socialists supporting Corbyn through the
Momentum movement.

threatened and intimidated.

are being armed with pro-Israel resource cards in a
new initiative to combat
boycotters and anti-Israel

Up to 2,000 freshers
packs have been stuffed
with links and information,
including a legal guide
for students who encounter
potentially discriminatory
efforts by the boycott,
divestment and sanctions
(BDS) campaign.

said: Israel is a big part
of many Jewish students
lives, and they should not
feel targeted because of
that.
UJS partnered the Board
of Deputies to produce
the resource cards to
help students combat [the]
delegitimisation of Israel
and promote peace and dialogue between Israelis and
Palestinians.

warmly welcomed government
plans to relax admission rules for
faith schools.
Under new education proposals unveiled by Theresa May, faith
schools will be allowed to select
more pupils based on religion.
Current rules put a 50 percent
cap on the proportion of pupils
selected by faith.
Board of Deputies vice president Sheila Gewolb said: We
have been advocating for this
for some time. The measure
has inhibited the creation of

demonstrably improved community cohesion.

A PENSIONER jailed for repeated

sex attacks at a Jewish boarding
school more than 25 years ago deserved his 19-year sentence, senior judges have ruled.
Retired teacher Trevor John
Bolton is racked by mental and
physical health problems, Londons
Appeal Court heard, and could be
nearly 90 by the time he is freed.
The 78-year-old was locked up
for sex crimes committed against
boys he taught at Carmel College,

in Wallingford, between the 1960s
and the late 1980s.
Bolton, of Kestrel Way, Clactonon-Sea, was convicted of 25
offences, including buggery and
indecent assault, at Oxford Crown
Court in October last year.
His case reached the Appeal
Court on Friday as his legal team
urged three judges to cut his sentence, claiming it was far too harsh.
The trial judge should have taken

more account of Boltons advanced
age, fragile health and otherwise
good character, it was argued.
However, Mr Justice Knowles
said: The fundamental question is
whether the overall 19-year sentence for this sustained and grave
offending over the course of 20
years was manifestly excessive. In
our judgment it was not and we
would dismiss the appeal.

TO IMPACT JEWISH AREAS
THE BIGGEST changes in constitutional

boundaries for more than half a century
were revealed this week, leaving Jewish MPs and politicians representing
large Jewish populations across Britian
grappling to predict the impact.
The alterations, announced on Tuesday, will be made in 2018, before the
next scheduled election cutting the
number of MPs from 650 to 600.
In London, there will be five fewer
MPs while in the north-west, which has
Jewish populations in Liverpool and
Manchester, there will be seven fewer
MPs.
In the capital, Conservative Mike
Freers constituency of Finchley and
Golders Green will be split, with Finchley joining Southgate to form a new
area predicted to vote Labour, while
Golders Green and Church End will join
Hendon in safe Tory territory.
Freer said: These are initial proposals, so the final ones may differ significantly. Personally, I am saddened to see
the seat broken up and will be arguing
that the historic ties many of our communities have should be maintained.
It makes little sense to divide communities down the middle of roads. For
example, one half of Golders Green
goes to Hendon and one half to Hampstead, one half of Finchley Church End
to Hendon and one half to Southgate.
The boroughs third seat, Chipping
Barnet, will take in Cockfosters as well
as Mill Hill ward, one of the most populous Jewish areas in the country.
Labours Tulip Siddiq heard that her
Hampstead and Kilburn seat would be
scrapped, with a new seat of Hampstead and Golders, including Childs Hill
and Hampstead Garden Suburb, one
of Londons safest Tory wards.
This means that the Conservatives
should now have a small advantage in
the new constituency.
Siddiq said the reduction was arbitrary while the Conservatives pack
the House of Lords with donors and
political advisors. This, she said, severely compromises the integrity of
our democratic process.
Jeremy Corbyns Islington North
seat has been divided between Finsbury and Finsbury Park and Stoke
Newington, raising the prospect of the
Labour leader representing a large
strictly Orthodox population.
Meanwhile, the two Ilford seats will
become one, paving the way for a safe
majority for Wes Streeting, with the
other Ilford seat held by Mike Gapes
also remaining safe Labour territory.
The proposed changes will now trigger an extensive consultation process.
All constituencies must now have
between 71,031 and 78,507 electors,
and while both Louise Ellman (Liverpool Riverside) and Luciana Berger
(Liverpool Wavertree) fall several thousand short, their unassailable 24,000vote majorities are thought to be safe
in the traditionally left-leaning city.
Ellman nevertheless described the
changes as a concern, saying: I dont
agree with reducing the representation
of the people. It would be a retrograde
move, particularly in Liverpool, where
there is lower voter registration.
It would mean fewer Labour MPs in
urban areas where more [population]
changes are taking place.
There was resentment in Bury South,
too, where Ivan Lewis has represented
his home town for 19 years. Expressing
surprise, the Jewish MP said the proposals had major implications for
both residents and politicians.
He said: The [Boundary] Commission
claim they seek to maintain community
identity, yet their proposal would divide
both Radcliffe and Whitefield which are

A NEW plaque commemorating 23 Jewish commandos and a senior British spy killed in a secret
Second World War operation has left Jewish
researchers scratching their heads, after the
appearance of a name nobody
has heard of.
The names of 23 elite soldiers who took part in Operation Boatswain have been
added to the Memorial to the
Missing at Brookwood Military
Cemetery in Surrey, but with
a 24th name the unknown
Picchi F.
In the first joint operation
between the British and Jewish
paramilitaries of the underground Haganah, Major Sir Anthony Palmer of the Special
Operations Executive (the precursor to MI6) joined commandos from the Palmach, in a
plan to sabotage an oil refinery
in Tripoli in Lebanon.
The 18 May 1941 operation
ended in tragedy, as the boat
sank in mysterious circum-
stances. Accidental on-board explosions and torpedoes from an undetected submarine are two of
several possible explanations.
Now, 75 years later, the names of those who
took part have been engraved
on a plaque in Britain by the
Commonwealth War Graves
Commission, following a
campaign by military archivist
Martin Sugarman of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women (AJEX).
With Palmer already listed
elsewhere in the cemetery,
there should only have been 23
names added but as the
plaque was launched, experts
noticed several spelling errors,
and were left asking: Who is
Picchi F?
Former Israeli ambassador
Gershon Gan said: It is a time
for mazeltov and shechiyanu, if
not for the mistakes in the list,
adding: Who is Picchi F, the
24th name engraved? Must
have been added by mistake.

RACHEL WEISZ and historian Deborah Lipstadt were all smiles at the world
premiere of new film, Denial the much-anticipated real-life drama
retelling the Harvard professors courtroom battle with Holocaust denier
David Irving. The Jewish actress stars as Lipstadt, who was sued in 1996
for libel by the disgraced author. The film arrives in the UK in February.
STRICTLY-ORTHODOX leaders in
London have welcomed an
Ofsted report on a Satmar girls
school in Stamford Hill, which was
told it was meeting independent
school standards after being rated
inadequate.

School, which is split over four
sites on Amhurst Road, was
inspected in July, at the end of the
academic term, after school leaders were told to up their game.
An unannounced inspection
last year revealed that English was
not being taught to early years
pupils, and subjects such as science were not being taught from
Year 10.
Other concerns were raised, in
areas such as safeguarding, student welfare and health and
safety.
The school was ordered to
come up with an improvement
plan, but proposals submitted in
April of this year were rejected as
insufficient by the Department for
Education.

who spent four years visiting the worlds
most isolated Jewish communities
ritish-born Jono David looks like

a man just back from a four-year
foray through the heart of Africa
to photograph the worlds newest
Jewish communities.
Raised in New York, he has lived
and lectured in Japan for the
past 23 years, and exudes
Zen, which would come
in handy for a trek
through the jungle
on your way to meet
black African Jews
unknown to most of
the Jewish world.
Yet this is what he
has been doing
since 2012, diving off
on a self-funded project during every eightweek university recess he
got (roughly two a year).
Now, finally, he has finished, having

travelled to 30 countries, taken
60,000 snaps and learnt a few things.
His exhibition called The Children
of Abraham and Sarah is showing
until December at Beit HaTfutsot, the
Museum of the Jewish People, in
Tel Aviv, before the work travels to Morocco and Washington, DC, but it is in
Kentish Town that we
meet, and he describes
his journey.
When we think of
Jews, we don't typically
think of Africa, I suggest. As it happens,
says David [pictured
left], in Africa being Jewish is less strange than
being atheist.
African people, by and
large, are very religious people, he

explains. If you dont believe in anything, youre seen as a true outsider.
So Africans accept it when you say
theyre Jewish? Yes, he says. These
Jewish communities dont have any
difficulty from local or federal authorities, or even from local people.
Theres a tolerance.
That is evident from the complete
lack of security at Jewish communal
buildings or synagogues across the
continent, he says, with the exception
of places like South Africa, where security is needed as much for the high
crime rate as for any anti-Semitism.
Still, there are places in Africa
where safety was clearly an issue during his trip.
While exploring the Jewish communities in Nigeria and Egypt, for example, he says he needed a guard, while

once-huge Jewish community (now
about 14 people) wouldnt even talk
to him without ministerial clearance.
Beyond that, there is the question
of who is a Jew?. This is often raised
in the context of Africa, due to the
high percentage of conversions
through various denominations.
David says he set himself a simple
parameter for the emerging Jewish
communities he covered.
They had to have disavowed any
allegiance to any other religions they

previously followed, whether they be
Christianity or a tribal or local religion, he said. The groups I photographed followed only Judaism. I
wasnt interested in any Messianic or
mixed-belief groups.
He says some groups, although
they are not recognised as Jewish by
the Israeli religious establishment,
have been DNA tested, and have genetic markers linking them to the Kohanim, the Jewish priests.

Likewise, David rebuffs the

idea that some might be converting to Judaism to improve
their chances of moving to Israel. Maybe one or two, but I
didnt get that sense at all of ulterior motives, of trying to find
an alternate path of getting to
Israel, he says firmly.
I got the sense that they
just want to develop, learn and
to become community members of the greater world Jewish community. They really
believed in the tenets of Judaism.
While some groups such as
the diverse and scattered
Lemba in Zimbabwe are isolated and others are makeshift
(in Cameroon, the community
centre/synagogue is somebodys house), many are connecting, he says, and most are
centrally located in the countries, whether that be in
Cameroon or Kenya. Theyre
not all far-flung and rural.
Theyre not hiding away.
Theyre all open. Some groups
have even emerged since I
was there, he says.
Alongside the more established communities, such as in
South Africa and Djerba, David
sought out the newest communities in places like Madagascar
and Gabon, which is only two

years old, and not yet converted.

Then there are the Abayudaya of Uganda, perhaps the
most interesting among Africas
Jewish communities, who have
followed Judaism since the
early 20th century.
Their leader at that time,
who had been reading the
Bible, declared his community
Jewish, circumcised his son
then circumcised himself,
David explains. Thats commitment, eh?
Over the years, foreign
Jews often lone travellers introduced the Abayudaya to
Jewish rituals of which they
werent aware, and during
Ugandan dictator Idi Amins era
the community was persecuted, but it survived, and in

2003, their leader went to Los
Angeles to study at rabbinical
school and become ordained
as a conservative (Masorti)
rabbi.
Now theres a yeshiva in
amongst a collection of nine
villages. But whereas most of
the Abayudaya are conservative, two or three villages want
to be recognised as Orthodox, which is causing a bit of
a schism.
It all sounds very Jewish. Indeed, many of Davids photos
capture animated conversation, with gesticulations and
arm-waving.
It seems old habits die hard.

HOW ZIONIST BECAME

A LABOUR PARTY INSULT
THERE ARE two ways of looking at the fact
that, by the middle of 2016, up to 20
Labour members, including one MP, had
been suspended or expelled due to alleged
anti-Semitism and the party had conducted
three different inquiries into anti-Semitism
within its ranks.
One is that each of these individual cases
was just that: an individual case that reflects the
existence of anti-Semitism in wider society, with
no further implications for the left beyond the
wrong-headed or misinformed opinions of that
individual. These are a handful of cases out of
hundreds of thousands of
members, Diane Abbott told
BBCs Andrew Marr, and the
idea that the party as a whole
has a problem of anti-Semitism
is a smear against ordinary
party members. Just a few
bad apples in an otherwise
anti-racist barrel, in other
words.
The other way of looking at
these cases of apparent antiSemitism is that they indicate
something deeper, a way of
thinking on the left about
Jews, Israel and Zionism that
has allowed unpleasant,
hostile and even anti-Semitic attitudes to become
part of acceptable opinion
in Labour Party circles. In
this view, the apples have
gone bad because there is
something rotten in the
barrel itself. If the infection is not removed, the
argument goes, then it wont just be a few bad
apples: the whole barrel will turn sour.
There is indeed something wrong in the barrel. The left has a long tradition of opposing
anti-Semitism and fighting for equality, but it
also has other traditions and trends that encourage or incubate anti-Semitism and that have
provided fertile soil for the Labour Partys problems. Since the 1960s, the idea has spread
across the left that Zionism is a racist ideology
and that Israel is a Western colonial implant in
the Middle East. It is a short step from this to
the idea that Israel should not exist and that its
supporters in the West which includes most
Jews are racists.
This New Left view that Israel and Zionism
are illegitimate form a modern bridge to older
Marxist theories that Jews are not an authentic
people and should, as history progresses, disappear entirely.
The emotional, historic and spiritual Jewish
connection to Israel was at first ignored by this
way of thinking and then later was taken as evidence that Jews are complicit in Israels alleged
crimes. Conspiracy theories about Jewish, or
Zionist, wealth, power and influence emerged

from Soviet propaganda and have become
worryingly common in the post-9/11 left.
The Holocaust is either denigrated or
turned against Israel via the most grotesque
and offensive historical distortions. At the
same time, a type of anti-racist politics has developed that is blind to anti-Semitism if it
doesnt come from the far right and that sees
Jews as part of the powerful, wealthy establishment in Western societies.
Zionist has become a political insult, used
in parts of the left to stigmatise and exclude
those Jews who think Israel should exist and
who feel a bond with it. The meaning of
Zionist or Zio as an insult is clear: you are
not one of us, you do not share our values,
you do not belong on the left. Sociologist
David Hirsh has called this the politics of position in which anti-Zionists do not attempt
to persuade Zionists that they are wrong, but
instead try to define them as being outside
the community of the good.
This means that, however much
anti-Zionism may be
anti-racist in theory, in
practice it too often results in anti-Semitic
political campaigns
as happened on British
campuses in the 1970s
and 1980s.
This has become a
moral question and
one of political identity, rather than an objective analysis of Israeli
or Palestinian policy and
action. Anti-Zionists may
say that, because they believe Zionism is racist, they
are perfectly entitled (or
even obliged) to exclude
Zionists from the left. Given
that over 90 per cent of
Jews say Israel is part of their
Jewish identity, in practice
this means excluding all but
a fraction of British Jews. This doesnt seem to
bother as many of Israels opponents on the
British left as it should. It is important to stress
that this way of thinking is not unchallenged
across the left, nor is it typical of all of the left
throughout its history. These issues continue to
divide the left as they havedone for decades.
However, these views are found most frequently in that part of the left that has been the
political home of the current Labour Party
leader Jeremy Corbyn and that swept him to
power in the party. It is the part of the left from
which he draws most of his support and from
where he has recruited many of his closest
aides. In these corners of the left the radical,
street activist, anti-war, pro-Palestinian left
these ideas about Jews, Israel and Zionism
have gone unchallenged for many years and
have become normalised.
With Jeremy Corbyns election, what was
once on the fringes of the left has now been
placed front and centre stage in British
politics.

A rare unifier in
a fractious world
ITS THE news the Jewish world dreads: Shimon
Peres has had a stroke. As we went to print, doctors
were hopeful he would survive it, but there were few
if any words of comfort.
We were hearing of bleeding, of him being
critical but stable, of his heavy sedation and
medics guesswork as to whether he was still awake
and listening.
In the fractious Jewish world, where there are more
opinions than inhabitants, Peres is a rare unifier,
someone who almost everyone likes, respects and
agrees with.
Well into his 90s, he is on the final lap, but still, his
every appearance offers words of wisdom, wit and
warmth. Who will deliver it when he is gone?
Who will provide the vision of peace he alone
seems to espouse? It is not clear. In the meantime,
we say: Pull through, Shimon. Pull through.

TAKING IT ANY MORE
In recent months Ive found myself more
angry with more people than I can remember being for decades. Ive found myself in
the position of trying to console the
inconsolable, explain the inexplicable,
justify the unjustifiable. The reason? The
reaction, more than two months later, of
some to the EU referendum result. I refer
to those people who find it unbelievable
that they ended up on the losing side.
Let me explain. Members of my own family, who have been actively and passionately
anti-racist all their lives, have been accused
of racism by formerly close friends
for voting out. Lifelong friends have been
permanently driven apart because one
judged the other as being intolerant over
the way they voted.
Grandparents have been described to
me as broken hearted because their
grandchildren branded them ignorant
and uncaring, again because of their
choice to withdraw from the EU.
Many in their 20s and 30s may feel they
are being unfairly treated by being expected
to succeed in their careers outside the EU.
By far the most absurd aspect of it all is so
many of the ideologically inclined should be
so prejudiced in their views and intolerant of
others. In short, bigots.

with a core part of myself and my community here in the UK has been adopted, in
this case with a successful result. Well done.
Yet there has been a second approach,
much beloved of the Jewish political left in
the UK (and elsewhere). That stance commences all discussion with an emphasis on
how much we Jews believe in peace.
As a member of the Board of Deputies
for five years, I well recall our former president, Vivian Wineman, telling us at board
meetings that this was his preferred
approach. This will usually be unsuccessful.
Why? Because, unfortunately, many nonJews even those who insist that they do
not have an anti-Semitic bone in their bodies lack an accurate education in Jewish
rights to live in eretz Israel.
Therefore, they tend to think of Jews as
interlopers in the Middle East and believe
that our desire for peace is equivalent to
the peace a burglar requires after he has
successfully looted your home.
In interfaith work, this approach is
doomed and will always be so.

reported statement condemning Israels

BEWARE THE LEFTS

VISION OF PEACE
Credit is certainly due to those rabbis and
others who helped to prevent the United
Reform Church passing an anti-Israel, proboycott motion recently (Proof that interfaith work does make a difference, Rabbi
Natan Levy, Jewish News, 25 August).
It is, however, incumbent on us to contrast our success here with failures in the
past. It appears that, when discussing Israel
in interfaith fora, we tend to adopt one of
two different approaches.
The first stance is to begin by emphasising the right of Jews to live anywhere in
eretz Israel. It is our biblical homeland and
one where Jews have had a continuous
presence for more than 3,000 years. From
what Rabbi Levy writes, it seems that a version of this approach focusing on families
currently living in Israel and identifying this

THE MORE HUMANE

Jill Tregenza (Letters, 14 August) demonstrates the folly of pontificating on a matter
of which one has no knowledge or experience. Having witnessed both shechita and
stunning/captive bolt slaughter, I can assure Ms Treganza that the former is far
kinder to the animal being killed.
In shechita, the animals throat is cut with
a razor-like knife, which severs nerves, arteries, veins and windpipe in one stroke.
As anyone who has suffered a cut with
a sharp knife will know, the disturbance of
the nerves means that it takes several seconds for pain to be felt and as the effect of
shechita is to render the animal unconscious in about 30 seconds, it should be
clear any discomfort is minimal.
For those who consider the standard
system of pre-stunning to be more humane
than shechita, I refer them to the article
The Humane Slaughter Myth on Animal
Aids website. If after reading this report,
these people still think shechita is more
barbaric than pre-stunning, I can only suggest they embrace vegetarianism.

Brexit can help move Europe

away from right-wing dogma
AMERICAN NOBEL prizewinning economist Professor Joseph Stiglitz is one of the great advocates of a progressive approach to global issues.
As a former chief economic adviser in President
Bill Clintons White House, an adviser to Hillary
and an ex- World Bank chief economist, one
might have expected Stiglitz to oppose Brexit.
But when I interviewed him in London recently
on his new book, The Euro and its Threat to the
Future of Europe, it became apparent that unlike
so many liberal-minded and middle-of-the-road
citizens in Britain, Brexit is no mystery to him. In his
view, when you see what the EU and, in particular,
the euro, has done for great swathes of Europe, you
can understand why this is a club to which the UK
(or the majority of it) no longer wants to belong.
Amid all the distortions, untruths and scaremongering accompanying the Brexit campaign, the
appalling state of the euroland economy barely
registered, possibly for two reasons. First, the economics of currency unions are too hard to grasp.
Second, because of the belief that it is better to
fight from inside the tent than outside.
Stiglitz provides a clarity on the European project
that has been largely lacking until now, except possibly from former governor of the Bank of England
Lord Mervyn King. During the referendum campaign, the public was constantly told by remain
that abandoning a market of 500 million people
would be some kind of disaster.
As Stiglitz lays out in detail, the euro area
19 of 27 EU countries is far from an idyllic economic block. What has happened follows an old
economic precept: bad money seeks out the good.
The result has been years of huge capital flight from
Europes poorer southern tier to Germany.
In Greece, gross national product, the total output of the economy, has plummeted by 25 percent
since the onset of the euro crisis in 2010. Adult
unemployment is 23.5 percent of the workforce
(against 4.9 percent in the UK) and youth unemployment stands at close to 50 percent. Similar
levels of youth unemployment exit right across
Europes southern tier.
In Italy, the third largest eurozone economy,
youth unemployment is still rising, reaching 39 percent according to the latest data. Stiglitz also shows
that despite the fact Germany has been a beneficiary of the euro, its economy has barely grown since
2010, while other industrial economies, including
those of Britain and the US, have recovered strongly.
It is the consequences of this economic dislocation that causes Stiglitz and others such anxiety. It
is generally argued that the rise of right-wing, semifascist parties on the continent has largely been
caused by waves upon waves of immigration from
the Syrian civil war and other conflicts. But the truth
is that, as in the 1930s, the principle cause of the
rise of extreme parties on the right and left has
been unconscionable levels of joblessness.
Immigration has added a layer to the rise of extremism, leading to the building of razor wire fences
along the Hungarian border, the use of guard dogs

and brutal border guards. In Germany, immigration
has given fuel to the extremist Alternative Party for
Germany, which gave Angela Merkels CDU such a
beating in the Mecklenburg regional elections. In
France, terrorism has unleashed anti-Muslim emotions that have added to disquiet over a stagnating
economy, heavy unemployment and given fuel to
Marine Le Pens presidential campaign.
Many of those who voted remain argue it would
be better to fight these destructive forces from
within the EU, but fighting from inside is a struggle.
The views of the UK a country outside the euro
group on the economic condition of Europe have
been excluded. Moreover, the euro group could
take decisions on issues, such as banking regulation, directly at odds with the UKs vital interests.
Britain has a huge tradition and history of tolerance, which doesnt exist in the EU. It is among the
reasons French Jews, for instance, have chosen
to make Britain their home for home.
Research by the late Professor David Cesarani
demonstrated that right-wing, fascist parties, with
anti-Semitic leanings, have never been able to
gain an electoral foothold in the UK.
Outside of the EU, Britain has the opportunity
to fight openly for the moderation for which the
country is renowned. Indeed, it can lead the journey
from the extremism now endemic in the EU.

Peace efforts are in dire

need of female voices
AFTER TORY MP Karl McCartneys spectacularly
misguided rant last week about the shrill equal
pay brigade, and in the same week that police
considered making misogyny a hate crime, attitudes to gender have again, rightly, hit the spotlight. As well as incorrectly interpreting the
statistics, and a Twitter showing that reeked of
#everydaysexism, McCartney seemed oblivious
to the detriment done to both sexes in restricting masculinity to antiquated ideas about what
boys were born to do.
Despite May and Clinton, and capable women
everywhere, this remains a shockingly prevailing
stance. And in Israel, the impact is devastating.
Because such attitudes are nowhere more
marked, or more damaging, than in peace efforts.
On the face of things, Israel is a beacon in the
Middle East of gender equality. Consider the
image of a sun-kissed teen dressed in combats
and slinging a gun. Those with a more historical
perspective may find themselves imagining a
sleeves-rolled-up kibbutznik tending the land. Or
former Prime Minister Golda Meir. Or, perhaps,
the unforgettable Dana International.
But on the ground, a growing religious faction
is sullying the nations egalitarian ambitions. All
year in Jerusalem we have seen women fighting
for a pluralistic prayer space at the Western Wall,
demanding, simply, the freedom to enter this area
as equals to men and to read from the Torah.

In 2013, the Supreme Court agreed. Yet
women attempting to pray according to non-Orthodox practices have been abused while the
Western Wall Heritage Foundation stood by. The
police did nothing or, in some cases, arrested the
women for such crimes as carrying a Torah or
wearing traditionally male prayer shawls.
It isnt such a surprise to see repressive attitudes within highly religious tranches of society.
But slowly, insidiously, the Israeli government has
allowed these principles to infiltrate secular policy:
in the army, the workplace, the courts, on buses.
And too often, calls against gender discrimination
have been deferred in favour of the more pressing
causes of peace and war. Almost as though
women were being patted on the head, mollified,
because there is just not time to discuss it, dear.
However, far from being a distraction from
war, the status of women is a critical aspect of
the conflict conversation. And female voices
have a vital place within it.
The status of women within a society is indicative of the values and progress of that society. If a
country is open, liberal, and values equality and
social justice, it is far more likely to approach
peace efforts with open, liberal and socially just
ideals. On the other hand, a nation that represses,
excludes, or undermines women, is much more
likely to be repressive, exclusionary and domineering in its outlook towards conflict resolution, too.
The Israeli women I know are doctors, psychologists, artists and educators; they are thoughtful,
strong, and impressive. But at the negotiating
tables, where are they? In these societies that supposedly want peace, their absence from such
talks speaks volumes. Because the feminist struggle is part of the broader tension between liberal
and fundamentalist factions of both communities.
After Camp David in 2000, Bill Clinton famously
remarked that if women had been present, they
would have had an agreement. Of course not all
women are peacemakers Frances Marine Le
Pen is a fine example of this. But the multitude of
womens peace groups in Israel have illustrated
already the important cooperation they can foster.
Perhaps, because of the universality of the female struggle. In almost every nation, even in the
UK (despite McCarthys claims), women are still
employed less, paid less, less represented in government and more exposed to violence. Perhaps
this encourages an empathy among women, a
shared value for womens and human rights.
In a conflict that is so deeply rooted, so
ingrained in the heart, empathy, respect, and
compromise are exactly what the conversation
needs. Women are what the conversation needs.
And the liberal men who can see that.

We are not at liberty to

abstain from the Jungle
guardianship checks, register the claim with the
French authorities, purchase a Eurostar ticket and
deliver the children from the chaos and danger of
the Jungle to their families in Britain.
I was appalled to learn that, for inexplicable
reasons, the French and British authorities had
barely begun the process, and almost all the successful resettling of Dublin III children had been
done by Safe Passage with funds raised from the
public at a cost of 2,000 per child. Worse, several
children were effectively in limbo. The UK government had recognised them as being eligible for
transfer to have their asylum claims dealt with
here, following approval of what is known as a
Take Charge Request (TCR), but delay led to
these children languishing in the Jungle.
The example of the Hebrew Prophets
reminded me emotion is not sufficient. Sometimes harsh words and condemnation are called
for; on other occasions prayer may be demanded;
but in this sad dilemma, the power of prayerful
clergy offering their assistance to the authorities
might yield results. Thus our group of clergy gave
notice that we would visit Calais on a given date
and help the authorities by doing whatever was
necessary including fetching the children from
Calais to the UK ourselves.
I am pleased to report that civil servants at the
relevant UK government department have since
agreed to propose to their French counterparts a

two-week target for the completion of a transfer
once a Take Charge Request has been accepted.
Even more importantly, children have now begun
to arrive in Britains.
Their arrival is, of course, only another stage in
their lengthy journeys. They have already made
long, dramatic and often dangerous treks and
what some have witnessed is hard to listen to: the
deaths of relatives by bomb, gun, disease and
hunger, destruction of homes, schools and hospitals, separation from parents, siblings and every
person they knew.
Notwithstanding the opportunity of safety in an
unknown land with a new language, the trauma
will remain for many a year.
It is to the credit of the UK local authorities,
communal organisations and thousands of
individual citizens that a welcome awaits these
children when they arrive.
The Jungle is home to some 10,000 people. I
met Solomon, who tends the Ethiopian Church; I
tasted freshly-baked flatbread made as I watched;
I drank sweet tea.
I departed with contradictory thoughts indignation and incredulity such a facility could be established on European soil within an hour of St
Pancras, but inspired and humbled by the human
capacity to overcome.

UNTIL A fortnight ago, I resisted many

invitations to visit the Jungle in Calais, primarily
because I was not sure of what use I could be
other than to observe in a voyeuristic sense.
But a combination of anger, and the possibility
of doing something practical to help, finally persuaded me. And so, I travelled to Calais with 20
other faith leaders as part of a visit organised by
Citizens UK a privately-funded third-sector organisation and its Safe Passage project.
My anger arose on learning that among the estimated 800 unaccompanied children in Calais
were nearly 400 with an unchallengeable, or at
least presumptive, right to residence in the UK.
The children were in two categories: ones with
a close family connection in Britain, who are entitled under the Dublin III Regulation to transfer
here for their asylum claims to be considered, and
just over 200 Dubs children.
Lord Dubs was one of 10,000 children rescued
from the Nazis by the Kindertransport and his
amendment passed by Parliament is to receive in the UK 3,000 of the perhaps 30,000 unaccompanied child refugees in Europe.
It appears to me that, while it is not easy, it
should be possible to carry out the procedure for
Dublin III children: identify those with family in the
UK, provide appropriate legal advice, investigate
and gather necessary evidence including

New Home Secretary Amber Rudd helped British
Emunah raise 400,000 for the Israeli charity this week,
after a dinner at the Guildhall attended by 350
people. Guests included Israels deputy ambassador
and British community leaders, including Gerald and
Gail Ronson. Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and British
Prime Minister Theresa May both paid tribute to the
charity by video message, praising its work caring for
disadvantaged and at-risk children in Israel. TV
personality Maureen Lipman and former Sky News

An Israeli charity providing additional care for Israeli
children with physical and mental disabilities has marked
its 15-year anniversary with an event in London featuring
former minister Sir Eric Pickles and Israeli parliamentarian
Karine Elharar. Trustees of the Malki Foundation UK
welcomed 50 guests for a private event at the Strangers
Dining Room at the House of Commons. Elharar, 39, has
used a wheelchair since she was 20, owing to the effects
of muscular dystrophy, with which she was diagnosed
at the age of nine. Together with Pickles, who is chairman
of Conservative Friends of Israel, she discussed the
boycott campaign, Israeli innovation and the states
standing in the world. Malki Foundation director Debbie

A new book reveals how the Yom

Kippur War could have been lost
but for the actions of one highranking Egyptian official, writes

flat, speculation arose the 63year-old Egyptian businessman had
been the victim of a tragic accident or
suicide. But the investigation into his
shocking death in 2007 caused by
a fall from his fifth-floor apartment
soon became shrouded in something
far more sinister when it was revealed
he was a former Mossad spy.
Marwan, the son-in-law of former
Egyptian president Gamal Abdel
Nasser, turned traitor and for nearly 30
years passed his countrys most intimate military secrets to Egypts premier enemy, Israel.
So great was his contribution that a
former chief of Mossad, Major General
Zvi Zamir, called him the best source
we ever had and indeed Marwan is
credited with saving Israel with an advance warning of the Yom Kippur War
of 1973.
His intriguing life and suspicious
death are detailed in Uri Bar-Josephs
fascinating new book, The Angel: The
Egyptian Spy Who Saved Israel, which
features extensive research and interviews with those who knew Marwan.
Bar-Joseph himself has first-hand
knowledge of Marwans story. He first
stumbled across the Egyptian billionaires true identity while working as an
IDF military intelligence analyst.
In 1998, he was given access to hundreds of documents when he was
asked to provide an in-house study on

Israels intelligence service during the
Yom Kippur War.
Although he knew Marwans name,
he did not reveal it in the book he subsequently wrote about Israels intelligence failures, because he was a
great spy, a great asset and I knew we
should keep his identity secret.
That all changed in 2002, when Eli
Zeira, the former chief of military intelligence, leaked Marwans name to
the press primarily because Zeira
believed he was a double agent. Five
years later, Marwan was dead and to
this day his killers have
never been found.
For Bar-Joseph, the
story is all the more
tantalising given he
fact that Marwan was
Nassers son-in-law.
For those of us
who are old enough
to remember who
Nasser was, he was
the God of the Arab
world in the 1950s
and 60s, he explains. When Nasser
passed away, Marwan then became a
very close assistant
of President Anwar Sadat.
Almost everything that passed
by Sadats desk Marwan could put
his hands on. I dont know of any spy
in the 20th century with such great accessibility to information.
So what was it that compelled a
close family member of one Egyptian
president and a close aide to another
to turn traitor and leak his nations most
valuable secrets?
Bar-Joseph says perhaps not even
Marwan himself knew why he became

a spy for Israel, but speculates on some
of the reasons.
First of all, there was a matter of
money. Marwan loved the good life
and under Nasser, who was a very different man, he couldnt get the money
he wanted, Bar-Joseph says.
He was also probably frustrated by
Nassers attitude towards him. The
president didnt want his daughter to
marry Marwan, because he suspected
he didnt love her and just wanted to
become associated with the family.
Marwan was also frustrated by the
fact Egypt had been
humiliated by Israels
victory in 1967 and
Suez in 1969/70 and
he wanted to side
with the victors, not
the losers.
Finally he had the
psychological need for
risk and the need for
adrenaline. Some people do bungee jumping for him, it was
spying for Israel.
Whatever the reasons, Marwans contributions
to
Israeli
intelligence, which went
on until 1998, was said
to be unparalleled.
Here we have one country [Egypt],
which plans to attack another [Israel],
prepares all the war plans, gets all the
arms, does all the training and Marwan
reports everything not just on the tactical level, but on the strategic level. He
gives Israel the Egyptian war plan that
was on the desk of the Egyptian high
command. Its really impressive.
In fact, it was a situation that was
almost too good to be true some

Israeli officers ignored vital information
that Marwan had given, believing the
Egyptian spy could not be trusted so
readily.
But his advance warning of the Yom
Kippur War was taken seriously and,
according to Bar-Joseph, he singlehandedly averted what could have
been a disaster for Israel.
Without this, they would have
started preparing only 15 hours later. If
this had happened, the Golan Heights
would have completely fallen into Syrian hands, Bar-Joseph says.
The forces that blocked the Syrian
advancement to the Jordan valley were
reserve forces mobilised on Yom Kippur, some six hours before war started.
Had they not been mobilised on
time, the Syrians would have, in a matter of two or three hours, completely
occupied the Golan Heights and Israel
would have lost the war something
that would have changed the fate of
the Middle East.
Despite the monumental impact
Marwan had on Israeli intelligence,
very few knew of his covert work. In 28
years, he had only one handler
something that is very,
very rare in the field of
human intelligence,
says Bar-Joseph.
Indeed, none of his
Egyptian colleagues had
reason to suspect he
was working for Israel
and nor did his wife
Mona. To this day, she
believes Mossad, not
Egyptian secret services,
was behind his murder.
For Bar-Joseph, the
exact opposite is true.
I saw Zamir [former chief of Mossad]

after Marwan died and he almost cried
with frustration. He published his memoirs a few years ago and wrote that
he saw it as his personal failure that
Marwan died this way.
Certainly Mossad didnt do it and
they could do very little to protect Marwan once he became a successful businessman living in London.
So who then killed Marwan? BarJoseph speculates that once the superspys identity had been revealed to
the media, it was only a matter of time
before Egyptian officials decided to
take action.
He also draws similarities between
Marwans death and those of three
other Egyptians who have died in
London by falling from balconies.
They include actress Suad Hosni,
Al-Leithy Nassif, Egyptian ambassador
to Britain, and Ali Shafeek, a secretary
of former vice president Abdel Hakim
Amer. All were involved in Egyptian
politics between 1966 and 1971.
When it became official that he was
a Mossad agent, Marwan understood
Egypt must do something, concludes
Bar-Joseph. They had to
get rid of this embarrassment that the son-in-law of
Nasser and one of them
was such a traitor and the
only way to deal with it was
to get rid of him.

I think they did.

fans love watching the warp-speed
exploits of Kirk, Spock, Scotty and
McCoy and marvel at the shaky sets
and clunky special effects. But who
knew the hit sci-fi series, which first
aired in 1967, was soooo Jewish.
Courage, the score for the first feature film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was written by the AmericanJewish composer Jerry Goldsmith.
He would later compose the scores
for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier,
Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek:
Insurrection and Star Trek: Nemesis,
as well as the themes to the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager.
INTERSTELLAR NAZI-HUNTING
The original series made reference
to Nazis and the Holocaust on a
number of occasions. In the
episode, The City on the Edge of
Forever, Kirk and Spock travel back
in time to stop Nazi Germany from
winning the Second World War. In
another episode, The Conscience
of the King, Kirk and Spock must
hunt down a former dictator responsible for the mass murder of
innocents after escaping to a distant planet. The galactic pair even
don Nazi-style uniforms in the
episode, Patterns of Force, on a
visit to the planet Ekons, which has
embraced the idea of a Third Reich
and installed a Fuhrer as their
leader. There are even soldiers in
brown shirts patrolling the streets.
KVELLING FOR KIRK!

James T Kirk, captain of the USS Enterprise, was played by William
Shatner. The Canadian actor, who
was raised in a Conservative Jewish
family, was born in 1931 to Anne
and Joseph Shatner, a clothing manufacturer. All of his grandparents,
who hailed from Austria, Poland,
Hungary and Ukraine, were also
Jewish.
SHALOM SPOCK
Leonard Simon Nimoy was born on
March 26, 1931, in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Jewish immigrants from the Ukraine. His
mother, Dora (ne Spinner), was a
homemaker, and his father, Max
Nimoy, owned a barbershop. Raised
as an Orthodox Jew, Nimoy recounts that he regularly visited his
local synagogue as a young child.
THE TREKKY TRIBE
Aside from Shatner and Nimoy,
Walter Koenig, who played USS Enterprise navigator Pavel Chekov,
and Mark Lenard (who played
Spocks father, Sarek) were also
Jewish. More recent series have
featured Jewish actors Brent Spiner
(android Lieutenant Commander
Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation), Armin Shimmerman (Ferengi
bartender Quark in Deep Space
Nine) and Wallace Shawn (Grand
Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner in one of the first episodes in 1968
Nagus Zek in Deep Space Nine).

Many of the original shows producers, including Robert Justman,
Herb Solow and Fred Freiberger
also identify as Jewish. Anton
Yelchin, who portrayed Pavel
Chekov in the rebooted Star Trek
series tragically died in an accident
earlier this year, aged just 27.
SPOCK THE COHEN
Drawing on his Orthodox Jewish
roots, Nimoy suggested using a
raised arm and splayed fingers, having seen this used
by Kohanim in synagogue
services for the priestly
blessing to the congregation, as the formal greeting
used between Vulcans. The
new Vulcan salute was
thereafter adopted by the
series. In homage to
Nimoy when he died last
February, Nasa astronaut
Terry E Virts posted a
photo on his Twitter feed
from the International Space Station showing the Vulcan salute, with
the Earth in the background, as the
ISS passed over Nimoys birthplace,
Boston, Massachussetts. Similarly,
the Vulcan greeting, Live long and
prosper is taken from the translation of the Priestly Blessing recited
in the synagogue: May the Lord
bless and keep you and may the
Lord cause his countenance to shine
upon you. May the Lord be gracious
unto you and grant you peace.

been at the helm of the USS Enterprises latest exploits since the release of the 2009 Star Trek film
reboot, which features the main
characters of the original series, as
played by a new cast. Star Trek

was a box office success, grossing
more than 290million worldwide.
It was followed by two sequels
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013),
which Abrams also directed and
Star Trek Beyond (2016), which
Abrams produced.

Star Trek introduced the idea of

seem like science fiction, but
renowned German-Jewish physicist
Albert Einstein, who first came up

closer to becoming reality.

As director of Star Trek III: The

Vulcan as a desert-like planet similar
to the landscape of ancient Israel.
Similarly, the costumes worn by Vulcan officials were based on Biblical

TRACKING POLDARK TO
HIS HISTORIC HOME
Frances Taylor celebrates the return of

the hit BBC TV drama series with a
tour around historic Cornwall
limbing a cliff-top path weaving

through an endless carpet of
heather, I look up to see a series
of mines on the horizon.
At St Agnes Head, which doubles for
Nampara Valley in the BBC drama
Poldark, the unspoilt South West Coast
Path leads to disused engine houses
which once formed the backbone of a
thriving mining industry.
Despite Aidan Turners best efforts
to distract us with his torso, this startling and dramatic Cornish coastline has proved to be as
much of a smash hit as
the popular show.
The roaring ocean
and wide, open
skies are just as
they would have
been in the late
18th
century,
when countless
tin and copper
mines operated
in Cornwall, and
since the series
took off, fans of
Poldark have been
flocking to witness
them first hand.
At the Levant Mine and
Beam Engine in Pendeen,
near Penzance, which fans will recognise as Tressiders Rolling Mill in the series, cliffs were once alive with activity.
Although plenty of what once stood
here has succumbed to the weather
and crumbled away, there is still rich
evidence of the work that went on,

with disused skip shafts, tramways and
chimney stacks as far as you can see.
Penzance itself is worth a look, as it
was here that Cornwalls once established Jewish community first settled in
the early 18th century and would stay
for the best part of 200 years, leaving
behind cemeteries here and in Falmouth. A small Jewish community, Kehillat Kernow, still exists today, with
members meeting for Shabbat and
holiday services.
Just south of Levant, youll
find the Botallack Mine
and West Wheal Owles,
which double for the
Grambler tin mine
and Ross Wheal
Leisure tin mine in
the drama.
To learn more, I
visit Poldark Mine
(yes, it really is
called that), near
Helston. I don a
hard hat before descending some 160ft
below the surface,
into the only complete
underground mine in Cornwall and Devon still open to
the public .
My enthusiastic guide, Wayne, explains this is also where mining scenes
for both the 1970s and the current version of Poldark were filmed.
Wayne (a man so passionate about
the Poldark Mine that he was married
down here) tells me they had to switch

off pumps during filming to allow the
mine to flood a little.
Tracing the veins of blue copper, I
learn about the importance of the industry in the 1700s, and how bad conditions really were for many of the men
working underground.
They'd often spend 12 hours a day,
six days a week down in the dark
depths, and even children as young as
eight would crawl through tunnels a
mere 4ft tall and 2ft wide. Few miners
lived beyond 40, due to frequent accidents and poor health from lung conditions and arsenic poisoning.
To find out what happened to the
metals once they were extracted from
the ground, I take a 10-minute drive to
Cornwall Gold and the Tolgus Mill.
The fields are still scarred from hundreds of years of mining; the tracks cutting through the hills would once have
transported tonnes of tin and copper
across the county.
Tolgus, the only working mill of its
kind in the country, has recently started
operating guided tours. Today, tin is
smelted on-site and is used in a huge
range of Cornish jewellery, from wedding rings to 18-carat platinum and
white-gold pieces.
After pausing for a cream tea at the
on-site caf, I drive along a twisting,
narrow road to tiny Porthgwarra, not
far from Lands End.
From here, I begin a five-mile walk
between filming locations on the Penwith peninsula. Its a challenging but re-

THIS WEEK: Rebecca

THE LIFE of Rebecca (Rivkah),
the second of our four matriarchs,
is given sparse coverage in the
Torah. But investigation builds up
a picture of a complex and determined woman.
A casual glance seems to show
Rebecca as being defined by her
relationship to other people. Yet
she is really a woman with a mind
of her own who manages her own
and other peoples destinies.
We first meet Rebecca in a list
of Abrahams relatives: she is
his brothers granddaughter, the
daughter of Abrahams nephew
Bethuel.
When the time comes for Isaac
to marry, Abraham sends his servant Eliezer to his relatives to find
a suitable wife.
The story is well-known Eliezer
sets up a test, to ensure that Isaacs
wife displays the right character

traits. When Rebecca arrives at
the well to draw water, she is
introduced again, using the same
genealogy, stressing the relationship to Abraham.
This highlights the fact that
despite growing up in an immoral
environment with a wicked father
and brother (Lavan, the deceitful
Aramean of the Pesach Seder)
Rebecca is the rose amongst
the thorns, a kind and righteous
young woman, eminently suitable
to marry Isaac and nurture the
next generation of the Jewish
people.
As an independent person, she
is able to reply emphatically, I will
go! when her family ask if she will
depart with Eliezer to marry an
unknown man.
Following her marriage, Rebecca
takes on the mantle of Sarah,
bringing peace and blessing into
the marital home. However, the
couple is not immediately blessed
with children, and when Rebecca
does conceive, the pregnancy is so
difficult that she despairs.
She takes the initiative again

and seeks an answer from God as
to what is happening. The response that she is expecting
twins, who will become two opposing nations is perhaps not
quite as reassuring as she had
hoped for, but at least it provides
guidance for the familys future.
Rebeccas upbringing gives her
the ability to accurately assess and
negotiate difficult situations, in a
way that Isaac, who has been far
more sheltered, is unable to do.
She loves both Esau and Jacob,
but she recognises Esaus true
nature, and prioritises the future of
the Jewish people over family loyalty, by facilitating Jacobs receipt
of Isaacs blessing.
However, she also ingeniously
masterminds Jacobs escape to
uncle Lavan, in such a way that
Isaac thinks it is his idea, thus showing the respect she has for him.
Our hidden matriarch has a
great deal to teach us about simultaneously maintaining relationships and being ones own person.

THIS WEEKS reading contains almost oneeighth of the 613 commandments contained in the Torah.
Ki Tetze addresses the way in which a
captive woman should be treated by
a Jewish soldier. This unusual injunction
reflects the ancient and cruel reality that
women were raped in wartime. The approach of the Torah here is to contain
wholesale cruelty by agreeing to a process
whereby if a soldier was attracted to a
female captive, he had to bring her home
and allow her to mourn her lost past.
Thereafter, the Jewish soldier was obligated to treat her as a married wife with all
the usual rights. This scenario may have put
off soldiers from taking this route, especially if the soldier was already married.
An eclectic mix of commandments follows, including first-born inheritance, rebellious children, the concern for cruelty to
birds and building fencing around roofs
and patios to prevent accidents.
Issues of infidelity, forbidden marriages
and resulting bastardy are then investigated. The common themes here are loyalty to and protection of fellow beings.
The state of mamzer is especially sensitive. It is no fault of the progeny of adulter-
ous parents that the parents sinned.

Nonetheless, the child inherits a status
that of mamzer preventing him or her
marrying anyone other than one sharing
the same class of parenthood.
Although the predicament is intended to
warn off parents from acting in an illicit
manner, the outcome appears to stand
in contradiction to the general principle in
the Torah and the prophets that children
should not suffer for the sins of parents.
Far from being a love child, the mamzer
becomes the subject of rejection by society. The sages moved to rehabilitate the
mamzer by stating that the community
should rather honour a mamzer who is a
Torah scholar than a priestly descendent of
Aaron who can function as a priest, but is
otherwise ignorant of Torah.
Workers rights and protecting the fugitive slave and debtor from punitive action
and interest provides a bill of rights for the
citizen and non-citizen.
Marriage and divorce, including the
obligation of a brother to marry his childless, deceased brothers widow or else
release her to marry any other man, treat
the public aspects of the private sphere of
the home.
Finally, the Torah issues a message warning of the existential threat to our nation
from the tribe of Amalek. The Amalekites
were historically notorious for not caring
about the welfare of the weaker members
of society.
In an eerie echo of this view of life, Nazi
Germany pronounced that disabled people
should be eliminated. For this and other
reasons, Nazism has been equated to
Amalek of Biblical infamy.

How serious is it now?
IN THE middle of the controversy over

the burkini being banned in some French
resorts, YouGov polled people throughout
the UK on whether they would support
a ban on women wearing a burka.
YouGovs question defined a burka as
being a loose item of clothing worn
by women in some Islamic traditions for
the purpose of hiding a females body and
face when out in public.
YouGov had asked the same question
before, in 2012, when 60 percent of
respondents said that they would support
such a ban. This year, 57 percent
responded that they would support a ban
on the burka, so there has been little
change.
So, how should Jews respond to the
findings of this poll?
First, we have to notice this is not a poll
on the headscarves worn by a large
number of Muslim women in the UK, but
rather on the most extreme version of
covering of a woman, the full-coverage
burka.
For us as Jews, who reserve the right to
wear clothing of identity, such as the
kippah or yarmulke and the tallit katan or
tzitzit on the street, we must surely support our Muslim cousins in wearing their
own clothing of identity.
I frequently wear a kippah on the street
and would feel that my rights as a citizen

had been infringed if I were required to
remove it.
The burka is more than clothing of identity. It is worn for the express purpose of
following an extreme version of tzniut or
modesty.
When my fellow Jews wear black and
white clothing only and women wear long
clothing, and perhaps a wig to cover their
hair, I know their intension.
Like the burka-wearing woman, it is
because of their interpretation of what it
means to be modest.
For me, as long as they are not doing so
under another person or a groups coercion, this is a choice that they are entitled
to make. I would feel no right to put any
restrictions on their right to wear such
body covering clothing and nor should
I seek such a right.
My Reform Judaism is clear that men
and women are equal in their religious
rights and duties.
They are entitled to choose the clothing
that they personally wish to wear with
consideration for others at times when it
matters.
I would also support the requirement
to remove an item covering the face for
a security check, but that would be
because of security issues in that specific
situation, not because wearing a face
covering might make another person feel
uncomfortable.

Teens love Israel Tour, but

exploring Europe is also key
TOURING ISRAEL at the age of 16 has long
been part of a young Jews journey a natural
Jewish step after a bar or batmitzvah.
Yet in light of the recent vote to leave the European Union, along with Britains slow movement to distance itself from the EU as a whole, it
feels more important than ever take a closer look
at mainland Europe, where many of our ancestors lived.
This summer I was lucky enough to lead on
LJY-Netzer and RSY-Netzers joint Kayitz Tour, an
11-day tour which included Sarajevo, Mostar,
Split and Vienna.
I was in charge of a group of 17-year-olds,
facing a turning point in their lives. These
youths were truly coming of age whether
choosing A-levels, leaving their parents home
or embarking on their first serious relationship.
Within LJY-Netzer, they had just led a camp
for the first time. Its a huge step to have a duty

of care for others for the first time.
Many at this pivotal age asked: Who am I?
What do I want from life? Is Judaism still important to me? I felt it was my job to help them
better answer these profound questions.
Kayitz Tour provided a chance to better understand the difficult decision many Jews faced: to
convert, assimilate or flee.
It provided a difficult confrontation with dark
eras of European history, examining why once
thriving Jewish communities have now all but
disappeared.
It culminated with a visit to the Jasenovac concentration camp in Croatia, where an estimated
100,000 people were murdered. For many, it was
the first time they had seen such a place made
even more harrowing by the fact the murders
there were carried out by Croats, not Germans.
For all of us this visit my second after first
going as a participant four years ago offered
a chance to look back into the past and understand how we ended up where we are and,
thus, who we are.
Its an opportunity every British Jew should
be given.

Sheltered housing is a perfect option for your parents if they were

to return to the UK. It offers independent living, providing a community lifestyle along with the added benefit of social activities.
It would offer your parents the freedom of their own front door
and you would be secure in the knowledge that the scheme manager is there for them to call upon in an emergency.
However, before they return to the UK, you do need to check
with the local authority what benefits your parents would be entitled to, especially if they are relying on housing benefit, as you

contact your local authority or search the internet to find housing

It may take time for a suitable property to become available
depending on waiting list numbers and the popularity of the
area that has been chosen. Do bear in mind that sheltered
housing is not emergency housing, so the sooner your parents

This is by far the most common complaint I hear and I can relate
to it myself. It is an issue in today's fast-paced society where
people are just run off their feet.
What you need to remember is that getting in even a small
amount of exercise per week is vital for your physical and mental
well-being. It should be one of your top priorities.
I would suggest starting off with small changes. Go for 10minute power walks during small breaks at work, take your children on active outings and join in with them. In addition to that,
try to set aside 15 mins every other day for exercise. Theres no
need to get to a gym you can do a perfectly effective session
at home. It's not always about the length of time you spend
training, you just need to make it high intensity (star jumps,
burpees, squats, press ups...).
The key is to plan ahead. Put these small walk breaks and training sessions into your diary and stick to them as if they were a
work meeting. You do have time for this make it happen for
your own good health.

told he is badly behaved on the journey. Might I get into
trouble with the police as a result of his actions?

Antisocial behaviour is behaviour likely to cause alarm, distress,
or harassment. Examples include vandalism, graffiti, bad language and behaviour generally causing a nuisance to others.
The police can order someone to stop the behaviour, for example cycling or skateboarding on the pavement, or disperse
groups of young people acting in such a way as to cause a nuisance. It is a criminal offence to refuse to follow these instructions. An officer can also detain someone for up to 30 minutes if
they refuse to supply their name and address.
If you are aged 10 or over, you can face criminal proceedings.
You can be can be arrested, fingerprinted, photographed and
searched while in police custody.
If you are have been involved in antisocial behaviour, you may
be issued with a penalty notice for an on-the-spot fine.
Parents can be asked to enter into a parenting contract to help
improve their childs behaviour. A parenting contract may involve
the parent attending counselling or parenting guidance
sessions.
A parenting order can be made if a child is convicted of an
offence or if a young person has been involved in antisocial
behaviour. It is a criminal offence for a parent to disobey a
parenting order.

Gaylord in Mortimer Street W1, just off Portland Place,
is a large and elegant special occasion Indian restaurant with heavy white tablecloths, thick carpet and
courteous service. The beautiful menu is presented in
the form of a hardback portrait book in an elegant
bronze colour palette, with metallic detailing and
raised type.
This lavishness and attention to detail is a sign of
whats to come when you dine at this hallowed institution the sort of place that Indian families have been
going to for years, but I have only just discovered.
Indeed, this year Gaylord is celebrating its 50th anniversary and to mark the occasion has launched its
own-label sparkling wine.
We savoured this bubbly deliciousness while we
nibbled on poppadums and chutney and perused the
menu. Our charming waiter encouraged us to try
Golgappa shots not the kind we are used to,
but little glasses filled with a spicy herbal liquid that you pour into a kind of hollowedout crisp profiterole and eat in one bite.
We followed these with wonderful
lamb chops, rubbed in a heady mix of
spices and grilled, Peshwari naan generously filled with nuts and raisins, gently
spiced tandoori tilapia (fish), chicken jalfrezi and pilau rice.
Indian restaurants do veggie dishes so
well, and the cauliflower in light crisp
batter was a total winner for us.
We also devoured sag aloo potatoes
with spinach and a fabulous scrambled
cottage cheese with tomatoes.
We finished off this feast with kulfi
sweet little patties dowsed in sugar
syrup a traditional Indian dessert
served with milky ice cream in blocks.

a list of the days dishes wild mushroom risotto,
sea bass or sea bream simply pan fried, a tender
piece of lamb with rosemary and caramelised
shallots, calves liver with olive oil and sage, a
wonderful steak all served with chunky skin-on
potatoes and a beautiful, fresh salad. Large portions, beautifully cooked and simply presented.
Dessert is crme caramel, tiramisu or dark
chocolate cake with strawberries. Its the kind of
meal you go in search of on holiday, and its right
here in NW3.
MOVIE AND MUNCH

As the days shorten and the temperature drops, the
autumn movies get released and a trip to the cinema
is in order. Combining
a movie with a meal out
makes it a double treat
and a cinema with restaurant attached makes it so
easy. The Picturehouse in
Crouch End is a particular favourite of mine for
this and it has just added haddock and chips with
pea pure to an already great menu, plus
lamachun a traditional
Turkish flatbread with lamb
and pomegranate.

Sometimes its the simple things in life that bring

the most pleasure. Theres a lot to be said for
home-cooked food in a basic setting, served
with warmth and paid for with cash. This is the
offering at Osteria Ovada, a little gem tucked
away in a side street off the Finchley Road that
you will most probably never have heard of, let
alone had cause to venture down.
Wine producer Paolo Cometa opened the
restaurant eight months ago as a hobby, because
he loves food. Its a small, dimly-lit room with
pared down dcor wooden tables, rustic
chairs and bare brick walls. The kitchen is
open, the wine is stacked high and the
antipasti is displayed on the counter as you
walk in.
Roasted peppers and courgettes,
tomatoes with mozzarella, sliced
aubergine parmigiana and whatever else
has been cooked that day is brought to
the table with a basket of bread. Tuck in
and savour with a glass of red (Dolcetto,
Barbera or Nebbiolo from Cometas own
vineyards in Piemonte, near the town of
Ovada in Italy) or white (Gavi produced
by a friend).
Theres no menu as such the head waiter,
who worked at Villa Bianca for 25 years and came

Did you see the article in The Times last

weekend on the significant increase in noise
levels in restaurants, largely owing to soft
furnishings making way for hard surfaces? Local
favourite Hudsons, in Whetstone, recently
tackled this issue by installing noise-quashing
pads on the ceiling. I ran a poll on The
Restaurant Club on Facebook to ask if other
restaurants should follow this lead.
A staggering 81 percent of those who

responded said yes, while three percent
said they like a noisy restaurant. The
remaining 16 percent didnt mind a little
noise. Restaurateurs take note!

couldnt believe how his side
were knocked out of the FA

He said: Even the referee
said he couldnt believe the result, but its a lesson to us that
we need to be more clinical.
Austin Lipmans early penalty
miss summed up their profligacy, and they found themselves trailing 2-0 with 20
minutes left.
Lipman did find the back of
the net to halve the deficit, but
it proved to be too little, too
late.
Landesberg added: Whilst it
would have been nice to have

this competition, we return to

London Raiders A. Jacobs said: Has this sent
a message out to the rest of the division that
well be the team to beat? Weve always
been the team to beat, we [now] just have to
keep solid and take each game on its merits.
Elsewhere, a hat-trick from Zac Lewis
helped Hendon A to a 6-3 win over FC Team

four goals, with Dovi Vogel, playermanagerAvi Markiewicz and Akiva Zneimer
also all on target. Markiewicz said: We have a
team of very talented individuals the whole
way throughout our squad and every single

one today worked their socks off.
LEquipe got their tenth anniversary celebrations off to a winning start as goals from James
Mandell, Andy Smith and Nick Stern saw them
claim a 3-2 win at North London Raiders C.
A hat-trick from Joel Lassman inspired Catford & Bromley to a 5-0 win over FC Team B.

Richard Fogelman marked his return to
Jewish football following a two-year absence as he bagged a hat-trick in Faithfold

big win for us. Character was essential and
we showed plenty of it in the second half to

Israel fury over

sickening fans
THE ISRAEL Football Association has complained to their Italian counterparts after last weeks
2018 World Cup qualifier between the two sides in Haifa was
marred by sickening anti-Semitic chanting from visiting supporters.
The IFA described the taunting of Jewish fans as sickening and called on the
authorities to prosecute those
responsible.
Releasing a statement, it said:
The Israeli Football Association
will send the photos to the Italian federation with which we
have a warm and brave relationship so that it can find and prosecute the sickening minority
that wanted to tarnish the visiting fans, their team and their
country.
Carlo Tavecchio, president of
the Italian Football Federation,
strongly condemned the actions, saying: We hope the relevant authorities can determine as
soon as possible what happened
and identify those responsible.
Tel Aviv set for

first MMA event
THE WORLDS second-largest
Mixed Martial Arts promotion has
announced it will be hosting its
first event in Israel and will be
featuring the countrys first MMA
fighter on the bill.
Tel Avivs Menora Mivtachim
Arena will host the Bellator event
on 10 November, and will see
Noad Lahat take on Scott Cleve in
a featherweight match.
The 32-year-old, who currently
lives in California, is only the second ever Israeli to fight in the
MMA. Having previously fought in
the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he won two
and lost two fights, his current
MMA record stands at nine wins
and two losses.
He said: My Bellator MMA
debut will be in Tel Aviv, I worked
a lot of time on it and am happy
to announce the fight.

Paralympians baby and medal
share something in common!

ROWER MORAN Samuel celebrated winning Israels first medal
of the Rio Paralympic Games with
the other precious bronze in her
life son Arad, whose name literally translates as bronze.
Speaking to Jewish News after
claiming her first Olympic medal,
she said: Its a great feeling. Its
like squeezing four years of hard
work, determination and faith into
one sweet moment where you
give everything to make your
dream come true.
"I have come a long way with
my coach Paula Grizzetti and now
I have a bronze medal to celebrate
with Arad.
The 34-year-old was struck by a
rare spinal stroke originating from
a congenital disorder in 2006,
which left her paralysed from her
waist down. A professional basketball player at the time, she returned to wheelchair basketball
following a long and arduous reha-
bilitation process, before switching

her attention to rowing.
Saying her goal was to win gold,
the 2015 world champion said:
My goal was to win the gold
medal and I really felt I could do it.
I gave it my all and won bronze,
which is just as sweet for me.
Her hopes of winning gold
werent helped by an injury which
she took into the race I suffered
from an elbow injury about six
month ago and we did everything
possible to overcome it, she said.
I felt good during the competition but the wind came from one
side of the course at the last part,
and there was a lot of load on the
elbow unfortunately.
Comparing this win to her world
champion win, she said: Winning
a medal in the Paralympic Games
is different, but also the same. The
main difference is in the fact that it
happens only every four years, so
its a longer journey. But the day
after you win a medal feels just the
same, you mostly remember the
race you did and think about your
performance.

Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, she
added: It was a great honour and
I was happy to get the call. He
congratulated me for my medal
and called me a hero, he said he
was proud of me and all the athlete of the Paralympic team.
Doron Shaziri won Israels second medal, claiming bronze in the
Mens R7-50m Rifle 3 Positions
event. His eighth Paralympic
medal, he has now reached the
podium in six successive Games,
He told Jewish News: Theres
no such thing as a sure medal. I
had a pretty mediocre year until
today. This was my best competition of the year and Im happy it
came at the right time.
And saying how he hopes to
make it seven consecutive Games
in Tokyo in 2020, he added: I have
always said that I will continue for
as long as I can, as far as Im concerned, I can see myself competing
in another Paralympics.

Committee to attend the
Games, Rio, who was born
with tibial aplasia, which resulted in him having his right
leg amputated through the
knee, has spent an actionpacked three days.
Carrying the Paralympic
flame with his mother Juliette, hes also met the British
Ambassador, Prince Edward,
GB sprint runner Jonathan
Peacock, MBE, and made an
appearance on Brazilian na-
tional television.
He said: It was very exciting walking with mum as she
carried the flame, and the
opening ceremony was spectacular.
Weve seen a lot of sport
and Ive also met another
member of royalty Prince
Edward, having already met
Prince Harry twice! He was
really nice and was asking me
all about my blade, which
sports I like and which ones
Ive seen at Rio 2016.
Im really looking forward
to another fantastic week of
sport in my favourite city!
