ED 271 Final Observation

Student: Cheryl Hoskinson
Elementary
Practicum Supervisor: Jennifer Margolis

School: Cedar Oak Park

Term: Spring 2016

I observed Cheryl in the Life Learners class at Cedar Oak Park Elementary
School on May 9, 2016. During this time, the students initially had a party
to celebrate Cheryls birthday. Based on the interactions during the party,
its clear that Cheryl is a valued member of the classroom who gets along
well with both students and other staff, as they provided a warm and
heartfelt celebration for Cheryl.
After the party, the students transitioned to a singing group. Cheryl did an
excellent job interacting with the students as she sat in the circle with the
students. Cheryl helped redirect students who needed reminders to keep on
task, and even utilized some sign language to help some of the non-verbal
students participate in the songs. Cheryl is very respectful towards the
students, and it appears that they have developed mutually respectful
relationships.
Having had the opportunity to observe Cheryl over the course of two terms,
its been wonderful to see how Cheryl has grown during this time. She set
goals of increasing her assertiveness and setting boundaries with students,
and has been successfully able to do so. Cheryl asks for clarification from
the teacher if she is unsure of procedure, and is able to use the parameters
and language for classroom management that is already in place in the
class. Cheryl asked for the opportunity to be able to observe some of the
students in different settings, and had insightful observations about the
experience. Cheryl was also given increasingly more responsibility in the
classroom as she demonstrated her ability to work with the children.
Cheryl always handed in her written work for the class in a timely manner,
and was an enthusiastic participant at the Practicum Seminars, both
listening and sharing her own experiences in the classroom.
Cheryl is dedicated, patient, and warm, and does a great job working with a
wide range of students, some of whom can be challenging. She would be a
welcome addition to any team!
