Journal #4
This is your assignment according to my teacher at Oak Creek
Primary school on Wednesday and Friday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. to teach
Liza how to improve her reading skills. Liza is in the fifth grade, and she has
a disability, but because it is a mild disability she is taught in the general
education class more than 80% of the day. Her main difficulties come from
reading and writing. It was my job to help her improve these skills.
At first, I was not sure what to do, because I have only worked with
typical children at Sunday school when it came to reading. I began slowly
with her by working with her to read books, and comprehend some of the
actions that took place in the books she was reading like for instance, The
Everything Sandwich.
However, last Wednesday, the 24th February, I and another individual
were helping her read a book about Luis who went into the villages bringing
books I must have had a different tone of voice when I was having Liza
repronounce some of the words that she mispronounced for after the lesson
was over she went to the teacher and explained that she felt that she was
being picked on by me. I didnt see it that way, and neither did a para-

educator who was observing the way I was working with Liza because she
has had to work with Liza as well to improve her reading.
The teacher told me on Friday, the 26th of February, that I would have
to change my style of teaching because Liza felt that she was being picked
on. I worked with Junior and the teacher informed him as well. We decided
that whenever Liza mispronounced a word we would say in unison the
correct way to say the word. It seemed to go a lot smoother for Liza on
Friday, and I believe that Liza doesnt feel that she is being picked on
anymore.
