With a view to expanding its footprint in the strategic Indian Ocean, India
signed four agreements with Seychelles for cooperation in hydrography,
renewable energy, infrastructure development and maritime security during
the visit of Indias Prime Ministers visit on March 11.
He also launched a Coastal Surveillance Radar project to boost security
cooperation with the island nation. India promised to give one Dornier aircraft
and free visa on arrival for three months to the citizens of Seychelles.

INDIAS RANK IN
Prime Minister visited Mauritius on March 12 and inked five MoUs with
Mauritius to give new impetus to bilateral co-operation. The agreements
signed included one on Ocean economy which will help utilise the rich marine
resources of Mauritius.

Solar Impulse, claimed to be the worlds only solarpowered aircraft, made a stopover in Ahmadabad on its
maiden global journey. The Swiss aircraft can fly day
and night without a drop of fuel, propelled solely by the
suns energy. The single-seater aircraft made of carbon
fibre has a 72 metre wingspan, larger than that of
Boeing-747 and weighs just 2,300 kg.

GOVT ACCEPTS FINANCE COMMISSION REPORT
Union Government has accepted the recommendations
of the 14th Finance Commission for devolution of
revenue collection from the Centre to the states for the
period from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2020. The
commission was headed by Ex. RBI Governor Y V Reddy.

OBAMA CHARMS INDIA
Barrack Obama became the first U.S. President to be the
Chief Guest at the Republic Day and the first U.S.
President to visit India twice during his tenure.
The two leaders agreed to operationalise the civil
nuclear deal, resolving the key hurdles pertaining to
the liability of suppliers of nuclear reactors in the
event of an accident and the tracking of fuel
supplied by the US.
Obama announced new initiatives worth $ 4 billion
aimed at boosting trade and investment ties as well
as jobs in India through a new Indian Diaspora
Investment Initiative.
For the first time in the history of Indias Republic
Day, all-women contingent from the three defence
forces-Army, Air Force and Navy, marched down in
the parade.
India and the US signed MoUs for formulating action
plans for development of smart cities in Allahabad,
Ajmer and Visakhapatnam.

MUFFLERMAN SWEEPS DELHI
The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party on Feb 10
swept to power with 67 seats in the 70-member Delhi
Assembly, leaving only three to the Bharatiya Janata
Party and nil to the Congress. Later, Mr. Kejriwal was
sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi.

The scheme will be offered by all Public Sector General
Insurance Companies for giving insurance cover against
death by accident.
Eligibility: Available to all persons in the age group
18 to 70 years, having a bank account.
Premium: Rs.12 per annum to be directly debited by
the bank from the subscribers account.
Risk Coverage: For accidental death and full
disability-Rs.2 Lac and for partial disabilityRs.1 Lac.

SCHEME LAUNCHED TO SAVE GIRL CHILD
Prime Minister launched the nationwide 'Beti BachaoBeti Padhao' (save girl child, educate her) campaign
from Panipat in Haryana on Jan 22 to counter the
adverse sex ratio in the country.
Noted film actress Madhuri Dixit was roped in as
the brand ambassador of the campaign.
A special savings scheme by the name Sukanya
Samriddhi Account was also launched to encourage
special savings for girl child.

INDIA SET TO GROW BY 7.4%
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) data released on Feb
10 showed that India is set to grow 7.4 per cent in the
year 2014-15 and cross the $2.1-trillion mark against
6.9 per cent achieved in 2013-14 on the back of robust
manufacturing sector performance and a surge in public
expenditure.
India's monthly per capita income is likely to be at
Rs 7,378.17 this financial year, up over 10 per cent
from last year, when it was Rs. 6,699.88 year.
India grew 7.5 per cent in the October-December
quarter, overtaking Chinas 7.3 per cent growth in
the same quarter, to become the fastest growing
major economy in the world.

INDIA SET TO GROW BETTER THAN CHINA
As per Global Economics Prospects Report published by
the World Bank, India is set to clock a 7% rise in GDP in
2017 compared with 6.9% for bigger rival China. India
will recover to 6.4% in the current calendar year itself
on the back of higher export growth and bolstered
investor confidence with the election of a reformminded government at the Centre, said the report.

GOVT NOTIFIES IND AS NORMS
Government has notified the rules for Indian Accounting
Standards (Ind AS) which are converged with global
standards IFRS. The norms will be mandatory for
companies from 1 April 2016. However, these norms
can be followed by corporates on a voluntary basis from
1 April 2015. For companies having net worth of Rs.500
cr. or more, norms would be a must from 1 April, 2016.
The RBI has included Macau and Hong Kong in the list of
countries whose citizens are prohibited from acquiring
or transferring immovable property in India. The other
prohibited countries include Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri
Lanka, Afghanistan, China, Iran, Nepal and Bhutan.

SLR SLASHED TO 21.5 PER CENT
In its 6th Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement
announced on Feb 3, the Reserve Bank held interest
rates steady at 7.75 per cent but cut the statutory
liquidity ratio (SLR) by 50 basis points to 21.5 per cent
of their total deposits from February 7, prodding banks
to increase lending. This cut will spare around Rs 42,000
crore with the banks, giving them more leverage for
lending. RBI has estimated that the real GDP in 2015-16
is expected to rise by 6.5 percent.

The Reserve Bank has allowed banks to install Cash
Deposit Machines/ Bunch Note Acceptor Machines at
locations selected by them (banks) without getting its
prior permission. RBI, however, advised banks to install
such machines with adequate security arrangements.

RBI has asked banks to display on their website the total
fees and charges applicable on various types of loans
and should be disclosed to individual borrower also at
the time of processing of loan.

ASTRA MISSILE TEST FIRED SUCCESSFULLY
The indigenously developed Beyond Visual Range (BVR)
air-to-air missile, Astra, was successfully launched from
a Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft to hit a simulated target at
the Integrated Test Range, Chandipur in Odisha. The allweather missile developed by DRDO can engage and
destroy enemy aircraft at supersonic speed (1.2 Mach to
1.4 Mach) in head-on (up to 80 km) and tail-chase (up to
20 km) modes.

REBELS TAKE OVER THE CONTROL OF YEMEN
In Yemen, Shiite Houthi rebels dissolved the Parliament
and took over the reins of the impoverished nation.
They set up a five member Presidential council to run
the affairs of the country. The President, Prime Minister
and Cabinet had already quit in January 2014.

MILITANTS ATTACK FRENCH OFFICE: KILL 12
Three alleged ISIS militants shot dead at least 12
persons, including two police officers on Jan 7 at the
Paris offices of the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, for
publishing cartoons lampooning Muslim leaders and the
Prophet Mohammad. The attackers included two
brothers Cherif Kouachi (32) and Said Kouachi (34)
who were later killed an encounter.
Millions of people around the world expressed their
solidarity with the slain French journalists by using the
hash tag #Je Suis Charlie which means I am Charlie.

VINOD MEHTA: Distinguished editor and commentator
who successfully launched a number of newspapers and
magazines, including the Outlook. He wrote his
autobiography Lucknow Boy: A Memoir.
D.K. RAVI: A young IAS officer was found dead under
mysterious circumstances at his apartment in
Bengaluru. The huge crowd of mourners bore testimony
to the goodwill he had earned by taking on the powerful
land mafia when he was Deputy Commissioner of Kolar
district till 2014.
LEE KUAN YEW: Great statesman and founding father
of modern Singapore passed away in March, after
dominating the politics of Singapore for over 50 years.
TERRY PRATCHETT: Famous British author, creator of
the science fantasy Discworld novels. He won worldwide
fame and a cult following his Discworld novels about a
flat, parallel universe balanced on the back of four
elephants which themselves stand on the shell of a giant
turtle.

BACHHRAWAN: The town near Rae Bareli, UP was in
news as two coaches of the Dehradun-Varanasi Janta
Express derailed there, killing around 40 persons and
injuring over 150 others.
HYDERABAD: According to the Mercer Quality of Living
Rankings 2015, Austrian capital Vienna is the city with
the best quality of living in the world, while Hyderabad,
ranked 138th, was the best Indian city to live in.
DIMAPUR: The city in Nagaland was in news as
thousands of protesters stormed the central jail there
and dragged out Syed Sarifuddin Khan, accused of
raping a 20-year-old Naga student, and lynched him to
death, after brutally thrashing him.

R K LAXMAN: Full name Rasipuram Krishnaswamy
Iyer Laxman, legendary cartoonist, creator of the iconic
"The Common Man" cartoon published regularly for
several years in The Times of India, Padma Vibhushan

liquor, usually of inferior quality.

was in news as a stampede broke out there during New

The 14 day sports extravaganza The 35th National
Games that started on 31st January, came to an end on
14th Feb. at Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
In all, sportspersons competed for the 1334 medals
comprising of 405 Gold, 406 Silver and 523 Bronze
medals.
Services created a record by topping the medal tally
for the third consecutive time. The group won 159
medals that included 91 golds. They won the Raja
Bhalendra Singh Trophy for best performance.
Amongst states, Kerala topped the tally with 162
medals, including 54 gold.
National Games mascot Ammu, the Great Hornbill,
has been selected for entry in to the Limca Book of
Records.
The 36th National Games will be hosted by Goa in
2016.
Anirban Lahiri won his second European Tour title at
the Hero Indian Open Golf Championship on Feb 22 in
New Delhi.

AWARD MONEY RAISED FOR SPORTS MEDALS
The Sports Ministry revised its Scheme of Special
Awards to medal winners in international events by
increasing the award money in Olympic and
Paralympics Games (summer and winter) from Rs 50
lakh to 75 lakh for gold, Rs 30 lakh to 50 lakh for silver
and Rs 20 lakh to 30 lakh for bronze.
Sania Mirza along with her American partner Bethanie
Mattek-Sands won doubles title at the Sydney
International Tennis Tournament.

KYC COMPLIANCE MUST FOR ALL ACCOUNTS
The RBI has made it mandatory for all bank customers,
including low risk ones, to be KYC-compliant.
The accounts which are not KYC compliant, credits
would be allowed but debits won't be allowed
However, the account-holder will have the option to
close the account and withdraw the money.
To facilitate compliance of KYC norms, banks have
been asked to allow self-certification of documents
and accept a certified copy of the document
KYC norms were introduced in 2001, after the 9/11
attacks in New York, America.
