Assessment and Technical Investigations

The following is a summary of the assessment and technical investigations carried out on the SikaTack Panel Adhesive
System.

Design Considerations
4 General
4.1 For the purposes of this Certificate, the SikaTack Panel Adhesive System may only be used in conjunction with
approved cladding systems of the correct type as listed in Product Sheet 99 of this Certificate.
4.2 The adhesive system is suitable for fixing composite, ceramic, high-pressure laminates or cement-based rainscreen
cladding panels, as listed in Product Sheet 99, onto aluminium support frames which are fixed to steel or concrete
structures (see section 12).
4.3 The system is designed for connection of panels to vertical rails only and must be installed to minimise
accumulation of moisture on the bonded area.
4.4 The wall and sub-frame on which the adhesive system will be used to fix the cladding must be structurally
sound and constructed in accordance with the requirements of the relevant national Building Regulations and
national Standards, and designed to provide adequate weathertightness to prevent possible moisture ingress to
the substrate wall at fixing penetrations.
4.5 It is essential that the cladding is installed in accordance with the manufacturers instructions and the requirements
of this Certificate.

5 Practicability of installation
The system must only be installed by installers who have been trained and approved by the Certificate holder.

6 Strength and stability

6.1 Wind loads should be calculated by the design engineer, in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-4 : 2005.
Due consideration should be given to the higher wind pressure coefficients applicable to corners of the building.
6.2 The design engineer should confirm the cladding panel is suitable for the intended application by utilising the
information given in the Certificates referred to in Product Sheet 99.
6.3 The adhesive bond, having fully cured, may be assumed to have the mechanical properties of:
allowable tensile stress (Nmm2)(1)
0.15
2
(1)
allowable shear stress (Nmm )
0.12
allowable shear deformation (mm)
1
theoretical bond width (mm)
10.
(1) Values less than 20% of the short term resistance.

6.4 A method of determining the suitability of a particular adhesively fixed panel is shown in Tables 1 and 2. Wind
loads of 1.2 kPa and 1.5 kPa have been chosen for both light and dark coloured panels to illustrate the effect of these
variables. The actual values for a particular site should be determined in accordance with section 6.1.

6.5 Following completion of calculation, it may be necessary to apply additional beads of adhesive to
intermediate support rails. When adding additional adhesive beads, it is imperative the application details (see
section 12.8 and Figure 2) are followed. For more information, and for guidance related to calculation, the
advice of the Certificate holder should be sought.
6.6 The sub-frame and the support rails should be so designed as to limit mid-span deflections to L/200, and
cantilever deflections to L/150.
6.7 The supporting wall must be fully restrained and able to take the full wind load bearing upon it. The cladding
system is not designed to provide structural stability to the structure in which it is installed.

7 Air and water penetration

The system may only be used with open-jointed, back-ventilated, drained cladding systems. Such systems will not
be airtight or watertight. See Product Sheet 99 for more information.

8 Behaviour in relation to fire

8.1 The adhesive, when incorporated in a typical build up comprising aluminium support frame and rainscreen
cladding panel, and tested in accordance with BS EN 13501-1 : 2007, achieved a fire resistance of
C-s2, d0.
8.2 Support frames of aluminium construction are non-combustible and as such have a Class 0 or low risk fire rating
in accordance with national Building Regulations.
8.3 The behaviour in fire of the cladding sheets and the fire resistance of particular assembled systems will depend
on the sheets chosen, and are not covered by this Certificate. The user/specifier should consult the manufacturer of the
chosen cladding system to ensure that the system meets the regulatory requirements. Suitable proof of this would be
based on test data from an established source, eg a UKAS(1)-accredited laboratory.
(1) United Kingdom Accreditation Service.

8.4 The incorporation of combustible material behind the cladding must be avoided wherever possible.
8.5 Cavity barriers must be incorporated behind the cladding as required under the national Building Regulations.
Measures should be taken to ensure that these do not block essential ventilation pathways, for example, by use of
intumescent cavity barriers (not covered by this Certificate) or overhanging incombustible breaks at each floor level.

9 Maintenance and repair

9.1 The cleaning procedure of the cladding system will depend on the particular cladding panels used. However,
in general, the use of high-temperature water, detergents or solvents should be avoided. For the removal of more
persistent stains, the cladding manufacturers advice should be sought.
9.2 Checks to the cladding system should be carried out periodically to ensure that ventilation and drainage
pathways remain clear. This ensures efficient removal of moisture and contaminants from the adhesive bond edge.
9.3 In a repair, the cladding panel is cut to allow access to the adhesive beads, which are then cut by a cheese wire
or oscillating blade. The old adhesive and double-sided tape are removed, the bond area cleaned, and a new panel
fitted using the procedures given in sections 11 and 12.

10 Durability
Assuming no exposure to UV light, the adhesive system is expected to have a life in excess of 30 years in
normal UK conditions. Generally, this is comparable to the life expectancy of the cladding systems with which it
is used.

Installation
11 General
11.1 Cladding systems incorporating the SikaTack Panel Adhesive System must only be installed by installers trained
and registered by the Certificate holder.
11.2 The adhesive system must be installed in accordance with the Certificate holders recommendations, the
requirements of this Certificate and the design specification. For more information on installation, including site specific
detail, the advice of the Certificate holder should be sought.
11.3 All design aspects of the chosen cladding system, including strength, thermal and other movements, ventilation
and drainage, should be checked by a qualified engineer or other appropriately qualified person before installation.
11.4 The ambient air temperature during installation must be between 5C and 35C and the relative humidity no
greater than 75%. Furthermore, the bonding surfaces must be at a temperature of at least 3C above the dew-point of
air at the installation site. For further guidance, the advice of the Certificate holder should be sought.
11.5 To achieve full stability, the adhesive should be allowed to cure for at least five hours within the recommended
temperature range. Extremely dry atmospheric conditions, for example less than 30% relative humidity, should be
avoided.

12 Procedure
12.1 For a given cladding system, the vertical rails are set out and fixed to the substrate wall, or sub-frame, in
accordance with the design drawings. The rails must be parallel, and in a single vertical plane, so that a uniform
adhesive bond with the cladding is achieved. To ensure a satisfactory installation, this stage must be carefully checked.
12.2 A predetermined horizontal datum is first marked on the support frame. Correct fixing of the first row of panels to
this datum is critical in achieving uniform gaps and panel alignment throughout the installation.
Carrier rail preparation
12.3 The bonding surface of a mill-faced aluminium sub-frame is roughened using a suitable abrasive.
12.4 The bonding surfaces of the carrier rails are de-greased using Sika Aktivator-205.
12.5 A continuous layer of SikaTack Panel Primer is applied uniformly to the bonding surfaces of the carrier rails, and
allowed to dry for
between 30 minutes and within 8 hours of its application. Should this time
be exceeded, the bond surfaces must be re-primed. SikaTack Panel Adhesive must be applied when the primer is dry,
Panel preparation
12.6 Panels are prepared, as detailed in the Sika System Product Data Sheet (1)(2):
non-porous panels (eg high-pressure laminates and aluminium composites):
the bonding surface is cleaned, ensuring the surface is dry and free from grease
the bonding surface is manually abraded
Sika Aktivator-205 is applied and allowed to dry for 10 minutes
SikaTack Panel Primer is applied uniformly to the bonding surface and allowed to dry (see section 12.5)
porous panels (eg cement based panels and ceramics):
the bonding surface is cleaned, ensuring the surface is dry and free from grease
the bonding surface is manually abraded
dust is removed by brush or clean paper towels and/or vacuum
SikaTack Panel Primer is applied uniformly to the bonding surface and allowed to dry (see section 12.5).
(1) For additional support concerning panel preparation, the advice of the Certificate holder should be sought.
(2) Some panels may require additional preparation. For more information, contact the Certificate holder.

Adhesive application
12.7 The SikaTack Panel Double-sided Adhesive Tape is applied to the aluminium rail (see Figure 1), to provide
temporary support to the panel while the adhesive is curing. The tape also provides the correct and consistent bond
thickness of adhesive, when the cladding panels are offered up to the carrier rails.

12.9 A continuous, uniform bead of SikaTack Panel Adhesive is applied(1)(2) near the opposite edge of the rail,
approximately 10 mm away from the double-sided adhesive tape (see Figure 2 and 3).
(1) Extruded through a pre-cut nozzle giving a triangular profiled run of adhesive 10 mm in height and 8 mm in width.
(2) Adhesive must be applied to the rail on a panel-by-panel basis.

Figure 3 Adhesive and tape application

12.10 To ensure correct application of the adhesive, it is recommend using a battery or compressed air powered
applicator. When applying the adhesive, the applicator must be kept at 90 to the carrier rail (see Figure 4).
Figure 4 Application of adhesive

Panel installation
12.11 The initial panel is positioned near its bottom edge on the freshly applied adhesive and, after careful
alignment, pressed firmly against the adhesive. Correct bedding of the adhesive is reached when the cladding panel is
in continuous contact with the adhesive tape.
12.12 Subsequent panels are applied in a similar manner using suitable packers to achieve a continuous and uniform
shadow gap between panels (see Figure 5). For heavy panels, additional temporary supports may be required.
Figure 5 Application of panels

12.13 After initial set of the adhesive, any packers or temporary supports are removed.
12.14 Careful planning is essential to ensure that, where a gap is provided to allow for thermal movement of the
vertical support rail, the cladding panel does not straddle this gap.

Technical Investigations
13 Investigations
13.1 An assessment was made of the system including:
mechanical resistance
durability
behaviour in relation to fire
practicability of installation.
13.2 An assessment was made of the manufacturing process, associated quality control procedures, and the systems
history of performance in use.
13.3 Visits to installations in progress were made to assess the bonding systems practicability of installation.
