1. SCOPE
This procedure is applied to the hydrostatic test procedure at site for the spherical
tank of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Tank in Karmala and Al-samawa, Iraq.
2. RELATED DOCUMENTS
3.1 Prior to the hydrostatic test, it shall be confirmed that all specified nondestructive
examination of welds and final inspection shall have been completed in
accordance with the applicable drawings and the related procedures.
1) All fabrication has been completed
2) All the specified examinations have been completed, except those required
after the test.
3.2 Before hydrostatic test, the inside of the tank shall be cleaned with a broom for
the foreign material such as dust, dirt, etc left at the tank bottom.
3.3 The schematic diagram of test equipment for the hydrostatic test is composed
as shown on APPENDIX 2, although it can be modified according to the
condition of site.
3.4 Before the tank is filled with test water, the initial settlement measurements for
each column shall be done.
3.5 The test shall be done before connecting external piping to the tank.
3.6 For the safety, the tank area shall be restricted with ropes and warning signs
during the test.
3/7
3.7 The water used for hydrostatic testing shall not contain toxic or corrosive
substances, bacteria, colloidal suspensions or emulsions or any harmful matter
that may affect the tank.
3.8 At least two pressure gauges shall be installed and one of them shall be
connected directly at the top of the tank. If the indicating gage is not readily
visible to the operator controlling the pressure applied, an additional indicating
gage shall be provided where it will be visible to the operator throughout the
duration of the test. It is recommended that a recording gage be used in addition
to the indicating gages.
3.9 The pressure gauges (P.G) used in the testing shall have been calibrated
against a standard deadweight tester or a calibrated master gage at least every
3 months and dial indicating P.G shall be graduated over a range of about
double the intended maximum test pressure, but in no case shall the range be
less than 1-1/2 nor more than 4 times that pressure.
3.10 Gasket for Hydrostatic test shall be the same ones to be used.
3.11 The metal temperature during hydrostatic test shall be maintained at least 17C
above the minimum design metal temperature.
3.12 Chloride content of test water is not greater than 250ppm.
3.13 Hydrostatic test recorder shall be used and recording chart shall be submitted to
contractor.
4. HYDROSTATIC TEST
4.1 Vents shall be provided at all high points of the spherical tank to purge possible
air pockets while the spherical tank is being filled.
4.2 After opening of top manhole, test water shall be filled to the top level of the tank
and it shall be confirmed that air shall have been deflated.
4.3 During water filling, the elevations or level of each column shall be checked for
each stage in accordance with Para. 5.1 of this procedure. When it was
differential settlement, or uniform settlement of substantial magnitude, it shall be
stop immediately to water filling. Any further filling with water will depend on an
evaluation of the measured settlement.
4.4 For the settlement of the tank foundation, the load of the test water filled fully
shall be held for at least 24 hours.
4/7
4.5 Before applying pressure, the test equipment shall be inspected to see that it is
tight and that all low-pressure filling lines and other appurtenances that should
not be subjected to the test pressure have been disconnected or isolated by
valves or other suitable means.
4.6 During the increase of internal pressure, it shall be prohibited to enter the
hydrostatic test area.
4.7 When the internal pressure at the top of the spherical tank is reached up to the
following hydrostatic test pressure, the internal pressure shall be held a time of
Appendix 1.
Hydrostatic Test Pressure : 28 kg/cm g
4.8 After the holding of hydrostatic test pressure, the internal pressure shall be
reduced to design pressure. At that pressure, the leakage and deformation of
the tank shall be checked.
Design Pressure : 18.8 kg/cm g
If any abnormal deformation, elongation and leak of test medium do not appear
on the tank, the hydrostatic test shall be accepted.
4.9 After the hydrostatic test, the internal pressure shall be reduced gradually to
atmospheric pressure.
4.10 After opening of top manhole, the test medium shall be drained slowly.
4.11 After the hydrostatic test, any standing water or other drift left in the tank shall be
removed, and the interior of the tank shall be cleaned to the broom condition by
washing with hydrant water and shall be dried.
5. SETTLEMENT MEASUREMENT
5.1 The initial settlement level readings shall be measured with surveyor's
instruments before water is introduced into the tank for the hydrostatic test.
During hydrostatic testing, the settlement of the tank foundation under each
column shall be carefully monitored at the following times.
1) Before water filling
2) 1/4 height filling, 1/2 height filling, 3/4 height filling, full filling with water
3) Empty after drain of water.
5.2 The settlement readings of tank foundation shall not exceed the following
allowable tolerances.
1) Even settlement
