Calculation of Payload Size from Coding Rate and Nch

Ref: 3GPP TS 36.101 version 10.2.1 Release 10 Section A.2.1.2

Given a desired coding rate R and radio block allocation NRB , the algorithm for
determining the payload size A is as follows 1. Calculate the number of channel bits Nch that can be transmitted during the
first transmission of a given sub frame
Nch = NRE * Nbits/symbol, where NRE is the number of Resource Elements per sub frame
2. Find A such that the resulting coding rate is as close to R as possible,

min |R (A + 24) / Nch |
