ThetermCellularissometimesusedtodescribeGSMservicesinthe850MHzband,becausetheoriginalanalog
cellularmobilecommunicationsystemwasallocatedinthisspectrum.FurtherGSM850isalsosometimescalled
GSM800becausethisfrequencyrangewasknownasthe"800MHzband"(forsimplification)whenitwasfirst
allocatedforAMPSintheUnitedStatesin1983.InNorthAmericaGSM1900isalsoreferredtoasPersonal
CommunicationsService(PCS)likeanyothercellularsystemoperatingonthe"1900MHzband".

FrequencymixingbetweenGSM900/1800andGSM850/1900
SomecountriesinCentralandSouthAmericahaveallocatedspectruminthe900MHzand1800MHzbandsfor
GSMinadditiontothecommonGSMdeploymentsat850MHzand1900MHzforITURegion2(Americas).The
resulthereofisamixtureofusageintheAmericasthatrequirestravelerstoconfirmthatthephonestheyhaveare
compatiblewiththebandofthenetworksattheirdestinations.Frequencycompatibilityproblemscanbeavoided
throughtheuseofmultiband(tribandor,especially,quadband)phones.

VeryfewNMT450networkremaininoperation.Overall,wherethe450MHzNMTbandhasbeenlicensed,the
originalanaloguenetworkhasbeenclosed,andsometimesreplacedbyCDMA.SomeoftheCDMAnetworks
havesinceupgradedfromCDMAtoLTE(LTEband31).

Multibandandmultimodephones
Today,mosttelephonessupportmultiplebandsasusedindifferentcountriestofacilitateroaming.Theseare
typicallyreferredtoasmultibandphones.DualbandphonescancoverGSMnetworksinpairssuchas900and
1800MHzfrequencies(Europe,Asia,AustraliaandBrazil)or850and1900(NorthAmericaandBrazil).

example,oneversionoftheNokia6340iGAITphonesoldinNorthAmericacanoperateonGSM1900,GSM850
andlegacyTDMA1900,TDMA800,andAMPS800,makingitbothmultimodeandmultiband.Asamore
recentexampletheAppleiPhone5andiPhone4SsupportquadbandGSMat850/900/1800/1900MHz,quad
bandUMTS/HSDPA/HSUPAat850/900/1900/2100MHz,anddualbandCDMAEVDORev.Anat
800/1900MHz,foratotalof'six'differentfrequencies(thoughatmostfourinasinglemode).Thisallowsthe
samehandsettobesoldforAT&TMobility,Verizon,andSprintintheU.S.aswellasabroadrangeofGSM
carriersworldwidesuchasVodafone,OrangeandTMobile(ExcludingUS),manyofwhomofferofficial
unlocking.
