CMNW PRESENTS NW PREMIERE OF BULLYCIDE, COMPOSER DEL
TREDICIS TRIBUTE TO SUICIDES OF 5 GAY TEENAGERS
PORTLAND, ORChamber Music Northwest (CMNW) continues its 44th Summer Festival with the Northwest premiere of Bullycide, composer David Del Tredicis transcendent sextet for piano and strings. Paired on the program with Schuberts Octet, Bullycide honors the memory of five gay teenagers who committed suicide as a result of bullying. Performances are at Reed Colleges Kaul Auditorium on Monday, July 21 and at Portland State Universitys Lincoln Performance Hall on Tuesday, July 22, with both concerts beginning at 8 pm. Bullycide, Del Tredicis haunting and uplifting 9-movement work, premiered to rave reviews at La Jolla Summerfest in August of last year. The piece is written in memory of five gay teens: Tyler Clementi, Billy Lucas, Asher Brown, Zack Harrington and Seth Walsh. Upon hearing about the deaths of these young individuals, Del Tredici composed the piano and string sextet, drawing inspiration from his own experiences with bullying. Del Tredici states, I was flooded with painful memories of bullying in grammar and high school. I remembered that awful feeling of being treated as a "defective" person I heard somewhere or read in the newspaper the word bullycide. I thought the term perfectly encapsulated this new phenomenon: a teenagers suicide due to bullying. Bullycide navigates the listener through solemnity to passion to humor to provide a unique and thrilling musical experience. In combination with CMNWs NW premiere of Bullycide, OPB Radios Dave Miller will host a taping of Think Out Loud to examine how the arts serve as an avenue to healing. This event takes place July 20 at 7 pm at Reed Colleges Kaul Auditorium and is free and open to the public. Featuring CMNW artists performing selections from Bullycide and Del Tredici himself discussing the work, this is sure to be one of this summers most powerful events. Composer David Del Tredici is known for his Neo-Romantic style and has recently taken a different tack to compose a body of music that celebrates his own gay sexuality. Del Tredici has twice been named as one of OUT Magazines People of the Year. Del Tredici has been, for more than 25 years, Distinguished Professor of Music at The City College of New York. He lives in Manhattans West Village with his mate, photographer, blogger, biker, Angellos Malefakis. TICKETS & INFORMATION Subscriptions (5 or more concerts) start at $115, and are on sale now.
