Operation Varsity was the divisions second combat jump,
following the D-Day landings. British and Canadian parachute battalions were landed opposite the Rhine to secure
the region ahead of the main Plunder crossings. Unlike
Normandy and Market Garden, the air drops were done
after the main assault was launched and efforts to resupply
were sent in straight away to ensure success.
The battles were tough and costly, but the paras succeeded
in their mission and then led the British advance across
Northern Germany.

Gliderborne troops offered the division the ability to deliver
a lot of troops in a concentrated area. This concept was
spectacularly demonstrated by the 2nd Oxfordshire and
Buckinghamshire (2nd Oxs & Bucks) Regiment when they
captured Pegasus Bridge in Normandy.
These elite troops went into action again during Varsity,
landing under fire in the operations toughest landing zone.

The Paratroopers are all volunteers with high morale and
excellent training. The men of the 17th Airborne had to
meet the same rigorous recruitment standards as the 82nd
and 101st Airborne. After two years of preparation they are
itching to prove themselves as good as their famous peers.
With their Garand semi-automatic rifles, mortar, bazookas
and Gammon bombs, they are ready to take on any foe.

The troops of the glider units take nearly as many risks
getting to the ground, and lose as many men, as the paratroops. The Glider units are made up of regular infantry
transferred into theses units. They have the same weapons
as the PIR platoons and are larger in manpower. Though
not volunteers, they are anxious to prove that they are just
as good as the paratroops. At Bastogne and in Operation
Varsity they will do just that.
