Perhaps every culture had its neat, reductive adages to help the
bereaved grapple with loss: destiny, fate, Godswill.
Many people in my village tell me to marry again, Pak Ketut
continued. They say, why are you waiting so long? There are many
willing women. But it is not so easy to choose a wife. He shook his
head. It is not like going to a restaurant and choosing nasi goreng
or mie goreng. He shrugged again. Iam waiting for the rightone.
Me too, said Janelle softly, staring out at the passing vista. The
bland concrete sprawl of Denpasar had given way to patches of
countryside; of rice fields and coconut palms, red-brick temples
and golden-green bamboo fences, and tall, brightly coloured flags
staked into the earth, fluttering about in the days waninglight.
Then we understand each other, Miss Janelle, said the driver.
We must make good choices, because family is everything. Only
twenty minutes to Ubudnow.
Family is everything.
She closed her eyes, fatigued by the trip and the tablets and the
alcohol, recalling how shed shared the news about her spontaneous
trip to Bali with her family inAustralia.
But thats . . . so out of character for you. Her brother, Kyle,
had held his beer beneath his chin as if frozen. Youll miss Mums
birthday, too. Shell go off herrocker.
Janelle winced, knowing he was right. Theyd sat together on
the sunken sofa, adilapidated centrepiece in Kyles weatherboard
cottage overlooking Half Moon Bay. A view that he could only
afford, Janelle knew, after more than a decade of hard work as
the operator of his own plumbing business.
Well, Mum will have to get over it, Janelle replied, feigning
boldness. Ithink Im having a midlifecrisis.
