BIA Educational Centre in progress!

The BIA mentoring program is the backbone of our organisation and the mentors role in the
development of the children is of vital importance. The mentor assesses the childs strengths and
weaknesses and develops skills for success later in life as well as fostering a sense of belonging
in life. This is such an important aspect to continuously work on, especially with our children, as
the majority of them are born into compromised homes. In the afternoons Born in Africa provides a
variety of educational classes which include, but are not limited to, homework classes, public
speaking, career guidance, math classes, individual counselling and group counselling sessions,
and computer lessons. To enable this positive growth in Kranshoek, we needed to ensure we have
a safe place to conduct our classes and projects in and therefore we purchased property
designated for the project. The Educational Centre as we like to call it will host approximately 120
students per week. When this newsletter went to print
the progress made on the building of the classroom
has begun. We are hoping to complete the building
process by the end of September. At the moment,
their current premises is not ideal at all. We are hiring
two converted shipping containers. The small space
limits the amount of children we can work with.
Big thanks goes to the Jules De Strooper Auction, the
BIA Meetjesland team and the many other sponsors
(see pages 7 & 8). Should you wish to assist in
speeding up the process by donating towards the
classroom please turn to page 8 for details.
Together we can make a difference!

Isabelle De Smul - Brink, general coordinator with

our builder Johan Krause at the start of the project.

Our mission is to develop well rounded, independent and successful young adults acting as role
models in their communities by providing educational and social support to school going children and
young adults from disadvantaged areas in Bitou, Plettenberg Bay South Africa.

Tertiary Education Update

Since its inception in 2000, the Tertiary study bursary fund has seen a multitude of students graduate. At the end
of 2016, we bid farewell to the following students who will spread their wings. Charn Majavie, Ruduwaan
Myburgh, Siyasange Tenge and Asanda Gigi.
It has been such a pleasure offering these students the means and support to ensure they graduate successfully.
We wish them all the success for their future plans and they will always have a place in our hearts!

Study bursary fund equals huge successes...

Ruduwaan Myburgh
Ruduwaan was selected for the BIA program in 2007 and he fondly remembers this as a
happy day. He was a Gr 7 pupil at the time. Because of his excellent academic record and his
exemplary behaviour he was part of our first group of students selected to study at Wittedrift
High in 2010. He commenced his tertiary studies in 2013 at the University of the Western Cape.
His 4 year B Ed Senior phase teaching degree will come to an end in November this year.
Looking back, Rudi has shown tremendous personal development. On campus he participated
in various activities, also volunteering at the Gender equity unit where he has had the best
experiences to date in his life as he likes to put it.
He also took on various leadership rolls such as the university lgbti+ movement and g3Y South
Africa program. During his 4 year course the extensive teaching practice experience greatly
helped build his self-confidence and teaching skills, when he ventured into schools in rather
unsafe communities. He believes that this is where his destiny lies. His advise to other young
people is to know yourself which is key to working with other people. Looking ahead at where
he will be 5 years from now he mentions that at that stage he would have gained extensive
working experience in previously disadvantaged communities. Good luck Wani!

Siya Tenge
Our student Siya wrote her heartfelt story as she felt it: Wow it is almost 5 years ago when
my great friend, Mandy Mngomezulu, introduced me to BIA. One day, Belinda called me and
told me that I was accepted for the programme. The excitement within me was beyond words.
My mother was overjoyed with tears. In 2012, due to unforeseen circumstances I was rejected
for the choice of courses I had chosen for University. I volunteered at BIA for 6 months. The
reason I applied for the bursary programme was due to having a single parent and not being
sure where my tertiary funding would come from. I saw how the programme uplifted and
developed students during my high school career, specifically my friend Mandy. I hope to one
day own my own business. In order to get there, I would like to gain experience within the
Human Resources (HR) and Industrial Psychology (IO) field. Dear dreamer, never give up on
anything you set your mind to. Always stay positive in every situation you face it is not easy
but worth it. Constantly have backup plans because plan A might not work out the first time
round. Be the change that you wish to see in your world. Thank you and good luck with your
future!

Charn Majavie
Charn joined our program at the end of Gr 8 when she was 13 years of age. This was in
2006. We fondly remember that at that time we thought she would pursue a career in the fine
art world as we immediately noticed what an excellent artist she was. During her year in Gr 10
at Wittedrift High, she became very interested in her friends Biology books and changed a
subject so that she could take Biology too only 2 years before graduating from high school.
This was such a risk yet paid off for sure. Her younger sister who suffers from Spina Bifida,
received weekly physiotherapy at home. Charn was drawn to this and after conducting
intensive career guidance with her, it was clear that this would be her path. She enrolled at the
University of the Western Cape and has just completed her 4 years honours degree in
Physiotherapy. 2017 community service is what will keep her busy for the year. Then she also
works at a local spa offering massages during the holidays. In 5 years from now she sees
herself working more with rehabilitating patients who have suffered serious injuries. Her
message for youngster is to never give up, no matter how long it feels, keep the faith. Charn,
clearly the sky is not your limit!

Born in Africavolunteers
appreciation!
Thank you letter from one of our parents
Dear Isabelle and Born in Africa team,
This is Ameera and Ethans mommy. I would just like to thank you
for everything you do for my children. I am so grateful for the extra
KUMON mathematics lessons my children receive, thanks to Born
in Africa. Thank you for their godparents, the help they get from
their mentor Marita, the camps and swimming classes and the
food which you provide. My children are so happy about
everything and I have never seen them this happy in their lives.
God Bless you and thanks for realising all their dreams. Thanks to
this, my children are sleeping in their own warm beds.
Thank you
Caroline Wellman (mother of Ameera and Ethan)

Thank you letter from one of our volunteers

Hi dear Born in Africa family,
Last week I had my evaluation of my internship, with my mentor at
school and the head of the faculty. They were very enthusiastic
about my story and in the end they gave me a very high mark
(17/20). Also they asked me if next year I wanted to come and tell
about BIA so you could get more internship student from UGent.
Im especially sending this e-mail to thank you all from the bottom
of my heart. Without you guys this wouldnt have been the same
wonderful experience. You all believe in the best potential in each
individual you meet and that is a beautiful thing. Thank you so
much for the experience and for this chance! Also special thanks
goes to the mentor Marita, she also deserves all the credits. She
supported me unconditionally, always when I needed her! Thank
you, never change.
Love you lots,
Emeline Halleux (23 year old student social work at University
Ghent)

Thank you letter from one of the school principals

Dear Born in Africa staff and volunteers,
I would gladly take the time to thank you for everything you have
done for our school and our children. Thanks to your effort and
time and the many programmes you have organised during the
last 13 years you make a very big difference in the lives of our
children. The enthusiasm of your staff and
volunteers is overwhelming and we are very
thankful for your interest in the education for
our children. What you hare doing means the
world to us and our pupils.

Wittedrift study bursaries

Our mathematical wizards!

2016 saw our largest group of students between Gr 8 and

12 studying at Wittedrift high 40 to be exact. Children
selected to study at WH are chosen based on their
academic performance, their discipline, attitude as well as
the financial disposition of the family.

Our Kumon students from Kranshoek continue to wow us with

their dedication and incredible results. Their back to basics
method truly proves to be the method to match. Susan
Donalds passion for the subject and BIA mother/volunteer
Delina Kleinsmidts dedication to take care of the students.
What a brilliant team!

It costs about R25 000 per

year for BIA to sponsor 1
child which includes the
school fees, hostel fees,
uniform, mentoring, stationary and other needs the
student incurs during the
school year. 2017 will see a
new group added to this
family!
What a lovely opportunity!

Career guidance
Studying at a tertiary level is already very daunting, with
the amount of work, deadlines, examinations and external
pressures looming. Therefor studying towards the career
most suiting to the student is very important. For this
reason, BIA spends much time working with its students
from Gr 10 to 12 on individual career guidance. Students
are tested for their interests, their current grades and their
school subjects to determine which direction their studies
should take. Because of this intensive and meticulous
method, our drop out rate is minimal.

We are getting ready...

With
the
Nippers
club
commencing swimming training
in the new season, our 11 BIA
development swimmers used
the winter holidays to undergo
intensive winter training. We are
so proud of our group who will
hopefully all qualify for the
nippers, club (junior life saving
club).

Also we have very

happy
students
who love what they
are studying and
the
leading
by
example
inspires
their younger peers
at school who one
day will also follow
in their footsteps.

Dream in Africa
Founded in 2013 this project has realized more than 100 dreams to date.
We strive to realise 2 dreams per month. See below the dreams and happy faces for 2016.
!

Since January more than 30 beds have been

distributed as well as loads of linen to match!

Having a safe, dry place to keep your clothing is

important and 10 cupboards have new owners!

A lucky group of students can now have fun

doing their own hair.

Our kids love and live close to nature. A lucky

few got to meet the Big cats face to face!

Thanks to the Buckinghamshire Born in Africa Charity Golf Day for realising so many of these dreams! Also to
Chantal Van Summeren, Maaswaal College, The Triangel, De Blauwe Vogel visitors and Jef Michielsen
for your support Together we can make a difference!

More dreams thanks to Born in Africa The Netherlands!

Chantal Van Summeren and the Maaswaal College
Beuningen hosted yet another Dream night with 10
artists, a fantastic show and an auction to raise funds for
BIA. Thanks to their efforts, the following dreams can be
realised: drama lessons, school project equipment, swimming lessons, vegetables garden project, internet for
Wittedrift High hostel, first aid box, after school care
materials, bunker beds, computer programs, furniture for
the new classrooms...Wow, looking at these dreams, so
many kids will benefit!

Mentorship Programme and assistants

Know yourself better...
We have been working with the Rots en Water program
this year during our after school mentor sessions in The
Crags, Harkerville, Kranshoek and Green Valley.
The aim of this program is to instil in our children the
importance of their inner strength, enhancing their
confidence and to promote anti-bullying within our schools.
Some of the time the mentors spend with the children is also
devoted to academic development and individual counselling
sessions. The mentors also spend time each term preparing
our children for the quarterly exams. Emergency intervention
takes place when required and our mentors also keep our
godparents up to date by compiling individual mid year
reports of each child they work with. There are currently just
over 400 children, with each of our mentors working with
approximately 100 children each. Thanks to this personal
interaction we have such a high success rate!

Meet our assistant teachers

Since its establishment, BIA has strived to
offer help where needed in our schools.
With over full classrooms and children
who lack reading and writing skills, we
have employed teachers assistants to
help the class teachers with the daily
tasks of educating the students.
Mathematics, reading and writing skills,
life skills and early child hood development are what our team of troopers do on
a daily basis. Chandr Plaatjies featured
at the top works at Crags Primary in the
Gr 1 class. Judy Mintoor to the right works
at Wittedrift Stofpad Pirmary school with
the Gr 1 children and Patricia Jack shown
below owns the crche called Come to
Learn in Kurland Village, The Crags. We
support her school where 50 pre school
learners are placed in her care 5 days a
week. 2 Assistant teachers, Gwyneth
Manuel and Marinda Arendse work at
Harkerville Primary schools with all the
grades.

Happy birthday to you!

Put Born in Africa in your will or donate through a duo legacy.

Even when you are no longer here, you can still make a difference in the education
of a BIA godchild. If Born in Africa is close to your heart, you can put us in your
will. That way you can give Born in Africa a little push in the back even when you
have passed on. Supporting BIA and making your heirs profit is also possible,
through a duo legacy. The duo legacy is a legal way through wich your heirs can
receive more than through a regular inheritance and you can support a good cause
at the same time. When you donate through a duo legacy, Born in Africa will take
all of the inheriatance taxes on their account. Both BIA, as an accepted
organization, and your heirs will profit from this! To get a better idea of your own
situation, please do not hesitate to contact your own solicitor or Jaak Leenknegt at
BIA (jaak.leenknegt@gmail.com).
Thank you Peter & Lieve Peusens - Platteau for donating all
the birth gifts of your lovely newborn daughter Lidewij, to our

Born in Africa Abroad

Born in Africa is one of the 'lucky' winners of the Jules Destrooper 130 year gala.

Very happy Born in Africa board members

Remi De Backer, chairman BIA SA, explains

Lieve De Backer so excited

Last year, our Born in Africa team received an unexpected phone call from Studio 100 (a Belgian television production company).
One of its founders, Gert Verhulst, who had been a BIA-godparent for years, had also accepted to become godfather to the 130year celebration of Jules Destrooper, a famous Belgian biscuiterie. Mr. Verhulst had the opportunity to put forward BIA as a
beneficiary for these celebrations. Recently, the Vandermarliere family (who took over Biscuiterie Jules Destrooper) kept to the
promise to raise money for BIA and other charities through an auction of 28 giant art-'lukken' (the famous golden, crispy butter
waffle) that were decorated by famous Belgians such as Willem Vermandere, Mark Eyskens, Gella Vandecaveye... This way, the
family shows their sympathy and support for organisations that try to make a difference in the lives of those that are less
fortunate. Who would have dreamed that the auction, that was held in the new airport building in Wevelgem in the presence of
over 400 guests, was to become such a phenomenal success! The BIA board members present were beaming with
happiness. It goes without saying that this extraordinary sum of money will benefit the urgent construction of new classrooms in
Kranshoek. The generous Vandermarliere family has been invited already to be present when they will be inaugurated, with the
Jules Destrooper-logo as the perfect tribute. Who would have thought 'lukken' could bring such 'luck'!

BIA Meetjesland-team
Thanks so much to this special group of folks from Belgium who have conducted a range of
fundraising events in aid of BIA. They have hosted a benefit dinner with a smashing success,
they organised amazing local fundraising auctions and are preparing participation with 10
individual sponsored members in the famous international Dodentocht of Bornem (100km).
Good luck Born in Africa - team you are fantastic!
