TheDeclarationofIndependenceisperhapsthemostfamousdocumentinUnitedStateshistoryas
itformallyannouncedthatthethirteencolonieswouldbeseekingindependencefromEngland.
Itsfamouswords,Weholdthesetruthstobeselfevidentthatallmenarecreatedequalhave
echoedthroughouthistoryandbecomethebackboneofdemocracy.Thisdocumentwasbasedoff
oftheVirginianDeclarationofRightswrittenbyThomasJefferson.TheCongressmetonJune7
andonJune11thJefferson,BenjaminFranklin,JohnAdams,RogerSherman,andRobert
Livingstonwereappointedwiththetaskofdraftingthedocument.Theysubmittedtheirdrafton
June28thandthenfromJuly1st4ththedocumentwasdebatedandeditedbeforethefinal
versionwassignedonthe4thofJuly!
ThesigningoftheDeclarationofIndependenceleadtotheAmericanRevolutionbyformally
declarationrevolutionagainstBritain,assertingthehumanrightofindependenceovera
nondemocraticgovernment,andbindingthefoundingfatherstogetherinthisfightafterthey
signedtheirnames.
The56menwhosignedtheDeclarationofIndependencewerecommittinghightreasonacrime
againstthegovernmentandiffoundcouldbeimprisonedandexecuted.Atleast5oftheoriginal
signerswerearrested.
