ACALLFORTRANSPARENCY

DonaldTrumpstillhasnotrevealedtotheAmericanpublichisinternationalbusinessrelationships,evenasit
becomesincreasinglyclearthathisoverseastiescouldwellconstitutesignificantconflictsofinterestwhenit
comestochartingUSforeignpolicy.Thisisunprecedentedforacandidateforthenation'shighestoffice.As
such,wearecallingonMr.Trumptodisclose,infull,thenatureofhisbusinessrelationshipsoverseasto
includespecificallywhohisbusinesspartnersareandwhatandwherearehisforeigninvestments.Wealsocall
onhimtopledgethathewilldivesthimselfofhisoverseasbusinessinterestsshouldhewinthepresidency.

AccordingtoaninvestigativearticlepublishedSeptember15thbyNewsweek,Mr.Trumphasshownpoor
judgmentwithregardtowhomhehasassociatedwithoverseasinordertofurtherhisbusinessinterests.The
NewsweekarticlereportsthatMr.TrumpcourtedMuammarQaddafi,adictatorwhomurderedhisownpeople
andwhooncepursuednuclearweaponsandconductedterrorismagainstAmericans.Newsweekalsoasserts
thatMr.Trump'sotherbusinesspartnershaveincludedKremlintiedoligarchsandRussianswithmafialinks,
anindividualaccusedofmoneylaunderingfortheIranianmilitary,aTurkishmediatycoonaccusedofrunning
afuelsmugglingring,IndiancompaniesthatmayhaveviolatedIndiaslawsintheirpursuitofbusinesswith
Mr.Trump,andaSouthKoreancompanymiredinscandal.Importantly,accordingtothisnewsitem,Mr.
Trump'sbusinesspartnershipsowemillionsofdollarstoChineseentities.

Itsnothardtoseewhythesereportedrelationshipswouldbeproblematic.Theycouldimpacttheforeign
policyMr.Trumpwouldpursueaspresident,andtheyseemtohavealreadyinfluencedthepolicypositionshe
hastakenasacandidate.WedonotknowwhetherallofthefactsintheNewsweekarticleareaccurate,andthe
bestwaytodispelanydoubtswouldbewithafullandcompletedisclosure.Theissuesaretooimportantto
leavethemunanswered.ItwouldbeinTrumpsowninteresttoresolvethesepotentialconflictsbeforethe
election.

RussiaoffersthemostclearcutexampleofwhereMr.Trumpsbusinessinterestsmaybeinfluencinghispolicy
positions.Mr.Trumpssonhassaid,Russiansmakeupaprettydisproportionatecrosssectionoftheirassets
andthattheyseealotofmoneypouringinfromRussia.Wealsoknowfromnumerousreportsincluding
fromaMayPoliticopiecethatMr.Trumpmademillionsin2013fromaRussianoligarchclosetoPutinwhen
hehostedtheMissUniverseeventinMoscowandthatthetwomensoughtRussianrealestatedealstogether.
AndMr.TrumphasfilledhiscampaignwithtopleveladviserswithdeeptiestoRussia,includingformer
campaignchairPaulManafort,whoresignedamidacascadeofrevelationsaboutthedepthofhisconnections
toproKremlinindividuals.

Onthecampaigntrail,Mr.TrumphasrepeatedlypraisedVladimirPutinsauthoritarianleadership,while
outliningpoliciesthatreadlikeaKremlinwishlist.HehasclaimedthatPutinwouldneverinvadeUkraine,
suggestedpermanentlycedingCrimeatoRussia,andplacedconditionsonupholdingourobligationtoprotect
ourNATOallies.HeevenencouragedRussianespionagetointerferewithourelection,atacticPutinhas
deployedacrossCentralAsiaandEuropetoboosthispreferredcandidates.Inaddition,hehasfloatedlifting
sanctionsagainstRussia,whichwouldbenefitbothPutinandtheTrumpOrganization.

Ournextcommanderinchiefwillinheritcomplexnationalsecuritythreatsandcomplicatedrelationshipswith
alliesandadversariesalike.ButourpoliciesmustbemotivatedexclusivelybywhatisinAmericasbestinterest,
notbythefinancialinterestsofourpresident.TheonusisonDonaldTrumptoassurevotersthatthiswillbe
thecasebydisclosingthenatureofhisoverseasrelationshipsandcommittingtodivestsuchassets.
