Introduction and Peliminary Steps

This document was created to aid users in installing PixelPoint POS v12.0 as well as in
upgrading to PixelPoint POS v12.0 from v11.0 or higher. The content in this document is
specific to the installation and upgrading of PixelPoint POS. Additional reference material
should be obtained for other pieces of software and the setup of third party interfaces such as
external ordering interfaces and payment processors/middleware.
Make sure that you have a POS version 12.0 license key before beginning the upgrade or
install process. Also make sure that the system where the v12 installation is being performed
on has an ongoing connection to the Internet and that no hardware or software firewalls will
prevent License Manager from contacting the PixelPoint Key Server. License Manager v12
requires an ongoing connection.

Prior to Installing
While this is only a recommendation and is not required, the name of the system where
PixelPoint POS is being installed should be "POSSERVER". In this document, references to
"POSSERVER" in paths are referring to the name of the system where the installation was
done. If your system is not named "POSSERVER", make sure to use the proper name in its
place.
Create a folder called "PixelPOS" in the root directory of the system where PixelPoint POS is
being installed. Then right click on it and grant full sharing rights to everyone ("Everyone").
This step must not be skipped.

Prior to Upgrading
Upgrading to PixelPoint POS v12 must be done on a system running v11.0 or higher. If you
are using a version of PixelPoint POS older than 11, you must first upgrade incrementally from
one version to the next until you are running v11. Then follow the steps in this document.
Refer to documentation on the PAR Partner Center for more information regarding upgrading
from earlier versions.
POS v12 licensing is not backwards compatible with older versions of PixelPoint POS. You will
not be able to roll back to an earlier version of PixelPoint POS after upgrading to v12 unless
you have license key codes from the older version on hand. Keep a backup of your key codes.
You must upgrade PixelPoint POS from the same Windows user account that was used to
install the existing version of the POS. The Operating System encryption components used are
specific to a user account; adding components or upgrading from multiple user accounts may
result in a message reading System Error. Code -2146893809 Object Already Exists and the
POS not starting up.
As of the date that this document was created, numerous system interfaces have not yet been
tested with v12.0. It is recommended that you test any required interfaces with your NFR
software before upgrading at an actual customer site.
Only upgrade when the system is offline and between business days and batch settlements.
Ensure that everyone is cashed out, clocked out, and that End of Day/Batch Settlement is
complete. Exit from all PixelPoint software and shut down the SQL Engine. Then follow the
steps below.

Database and File Backup

Back up the database and database log file - PixelSQLBase10.db and PixelSQLBase10.log.
They can be found in the PixelSQL folder in the root directory.
Back up all custom files such as floor layout files, Form Designer templates, and
Pixel32.ini.

Directory Preparation
Rename the shared PixelPOS folder "PixelPOS11_Old".
Check that the PixelSQLBase ODBC entry has the original server name and database name
("PixelSQLBase"). The database will not upgrade automatically unless the ODBC entry is
named as expected.

Create a new "PixelPOS" folder and share it with full read/write access for all users.

Installation Procedure
Begin the PixelPoint installation by running the PixelPoint POS installation file as
Administrator. This will ensure that there will be no User Account Control (UAC) warnings
that go unprompted and no disk access issues that will produce errors.
Server Install

If this is a Server installation, the full PixelPoint installer should be run (as Administrator)
locally on the system.
Station Install

If this is a Station installation, the Station Install setup file should be run (as Administrator)
from the networked folder: \\POSSERVER\PixelPOS\Station Install

Agree to the UAC warning when it appears.

If this is a Server install, the EverServ PixelPoint Server installation will begin. Accept the
terms of the license agreement.

Review the readme information carefully to determine the type of installation to be

performed.

Multi-Station

If you are going to use PixelPOS on more than one computer or if you have a dedicated POS
Server connected to the POS, perform a Multi-Station Install. Rather than installing PixelPoint
using a drive letter such as "C:", use the shared network path name based on the Uniform
Naming Convention (UNC). For example, instead of using the path "C:\PixelPOS", use:
"\\POSSERVER\PixelPOS)".
Single Station

If you will not be performing a multi-station install, simply use the local path "C:\PixelPOS".

When the PixelPoint Server installation completes, select [Finish].

The EverServ PixelPoint Station installation will now begin. If this is a Station install, this will
be the first step in the installation. Accept the terms in the license agreement and then select
[Next].

Proceed with the installation process. You will be informed that you must assign a unique
station number to the computer.

Select [OK] and enter a station number. The installation will finish without requiring any more
input. Restart the system if necessary.
After the installation is complete, start the SQL Engine and License Manager (both in the
Windows Startup folder). Then run PixelPointUpdate.exe (from the PixelPOS folder) and follow
the prompts to receive the latest files from the update server. Make sure to run
PixelPointUpdate on a regular basis to keep the POS up to date with the latest fixes and new
features.

Running License Manager v12

Licenses for POS v12 work differently from earlier versions. The following steps describe how
to enter in and activate a v12 license key. Refer to the PAR Partner Center for additional
documentation on v12 licensing and using License Manager v12.

Start License Manager if it is not yet running. A message will appear notifying you that the
license information must be updated. Select [OK].

Enter your new v12 license key in the Key# field and activate the license online or by file.
Should the information in the PixelPoint DB not match the registered license information, you
will then be asked if you would like to update Company Info. Select [Yes] to update the DB
with the information registered to the license.
Remember that License Manager will require an ongoing connection to the Internet.

Restoring Backed-Up Files

If you are in the process of upgrading from v11 to v12, follow these steps to restore your files
from the backups you created earlier on:
1. Copy the backed-up database files from the backup location into the PixelSQL folder.
2. Copy the backed-up custom files (such as floor layout files, Form Designer templates,
and Pixel32.ini) into the PixelPOS folder.
The database will go through an upgrade process the first time that BackOffice or PixelPoint
POS is launched to prepare it for use with the latest version of PixelPoint POS.
