Bank

of

Baroda

is

an

Indian

state

owned banking

and financial

services company headquartered in Vadodara (earlier known as Baroda) in


Gujarat, India. It is the second-largest bank in India, after State Bank of India,
and offers a range of banking products and financial services to corporate and
retail customers through its branches and through its specialised subsidiaries
and affiliates. In addition to its headquarters in its home state of Gujarat, it
has a corporate headquarters in the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai.

Based on 2012 data, it is ranked 715 on Forbes Global 2000 list. Bank of
Baroda has total assets in excess of

3.58 trillion, a network of 4464 branches

in India, and over 2000 ATMs. The bank, along with 13 other major commercial
banks of India, was nationalised on 19 July 1969, by the Government of
India and has been designated as a profit-making public sector undertaking
(PSU). In 1908, Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, one of the knights of
the Maratha Kingdom, set up the Bank of Baroda with other stalwarts of
industry such as Sampatrao Gaekwad, Ralph Whitenack, Vithaldas Thakersey,
Tulsidas Kilachand and NM Chokshi. Two years later, Bank established its first
branch in Ahmedabad. The bank grew domestically until after World War II.
Then in 1953 it crossed the Indian Ocean to serve the communities of Indians
in

in Mombasa and Kampala. The next year it opened a second branch in Kenya,
in Nairobi, and in 1956 it opened a branch in Tanzania at Dar-es-Salaam. Then
in 1957 Bank took a giant step abroad by establishing a branch in London.
London was the center of the British Commonwealth and the most important
international banking center. In 1958, Bank acquired Hind Bank (Calcutta; est.
1943), which became its first domestic acquisition.

subsidiary of Bank of Baroda. Its financial services portfolio includes initial
public offerings, private placement of debts, corporate restructuring, business
valuation, mergers and acquisition, project appraisal, loan syndication,
institutional equity research and brokerage.
IndiaFirst Life Insurance Company is a joint venture between Bank of Baroda
(44%) and fellow Indian state-owned bank Andhra Bank (30%) and UKs
financial and investment company Legal & General (26%). It was incorporated
in November, 2009 and has its headquarters in Mumbai. The company started
strongly, achieving a turnover in excess of 2 billion in its first four and half
months.

Career Path

The Bank recruits employees at the sub staff, clerk and officer cadres.
Promotion exercises are carried out annually, providing opportunities for
growth within the bank. The officer cadre is divided into 7 distinct scales,
which represent the junior, middle, senior and top management of the
organization. If you are among the top performing officers in the bank, you may

be bestowed with tremendous responsibility (like charge of a branch) even at


the junior level. The extent of responsibility is ramped up with seniority.

Below are indicative roles at various levels of seniority:

Junior Management:
Branch head of a small branch, officer in charge of a department in a branch,
officer in an administrative office.

Middle Management:
Branch head of a medium sized branch, Manager in charge of a department in
a branch or administrative office.

Senior Management:
Branch head of a large branch, Manager in charge of a large department in an
administrative office, Deputy Regional Manager for a region in the bank.

Top Executive:
Branch head of an exceptionally large branch, Regional Head, Deputy Zonal
Head, Zonal Head, Corporate Functional Head/second in line.

Profiles

The bank hires from a diverse variety of educational backgrounds. With


graduates in science, commerce, engineering and business administration in
its workforce, an environment of diversity is created among its employees. A
person would be recruited as either a clerk, or an officer, depending on
demonstrated ability at the entry level.

Clerk:

A clerk is the face of the bank - a pivotal point of contact for customers. The
typical role of a clerk is to build long term relationship with customers. He
handles basic customer financial queries and services like balance enquiry,
pass book printing and payment and receipts of cash. He also handles data
entry of customer information and other financial transactions.

Officer:

A bank officer is senior to a clerk, and is bestowed with higher authorization


and signatory powers. An officer can serve the bank in various capacities,
depending on his place of posting and his seniority. Roles reside in branches,
administrative offices, and processing centers. There are two types of officers
Generalists and Specialists. While generalists typically take on general banking
roles, specialists take on roles in certain specific areas (e.g.: HR, IT, Law,
Planning, Finance, Security and Marketing).

Recruitment Channels

IBPS:

IBPS from time to time announces the common written exam for all the 19
Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and IDBI bank. A detailed advertisement regarding
the Age, Educational Criteria and other qualifications or criteria required to
apply for Common Written Exam (CWE) get published on www.ibps.in and in
leading newspapers. One who aspires to join any of the PSBs has to qualify in
the Common Written Exam (CWE), which is specific to the state. Candidates
who qualify in Common Written Exam (CWE) will subsequently be called for
Common interview which will be coordinated by IBPS. Candidates will also be
asked to submit their preference order of banks. Candidates successful in both
the written exam and interview will be listed in merit order. Depending on the
vacancies in each bank of ones preference, an offer is made to candidates by
the appropriate bank.

Baroda Manipal School of Banking:

Baroda - Manipal School of Banking has been set up jointly by Bank of Baroda
and Manipal group. The school has been set up to first train prospective
candidates in Banking and Finance before their embarking on a Banking
career with Bank of Baroda. Students are selected through a rigorous selection
process and given a systematic training in various areas of Banking and
management disciplines in order to make them work ready at the earliest.

Lateral Recruitment:

The bank recruits officers at the lateral levels also, viz. Scale II, Scale III, etc.,
based on requirements that arise from time to time. Eligibility criteria to apply
for these posts depend on the grade/scale for which the recruitment is going
on, and will be declared on the website and in leading dailies.

Selection Process
At Bank of Baroda, the selection process aims at getting applicants who are
likely to succeed at various roles in the Bank. The endeavor is to select people
who are bright, have good communication skills (both oral and written), are
dedicated, can work effectively in teams, are passionate about their career
goals and who display integrity and a positive attitude.
Depending on the level of recruitment, the selection process consists of
following combinations:
Written tests and interview:
For Clerical and Probationary Officers recruitment.
Interviews and / or group discussions:
For experienced recruitment (Specialist officers / lateral recruitment)
Written test:
The written test comprises of a combination of the following tests, with varying
difficulty levels for different positions:

Personal Interview:
All applicants have to necessarily appear for the interviews, which is the final
step in the selection process.
The Selection Procedure in Bank of Baroda consists of a written test and a
personal interview round. The written test comprises of objective type of
questions. The questions in the written test cover topics like Socio Economic

& Banking Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, Marketing Aptitude, Logical


reasoning and English. The written test consists of around 200 questions to be
completed in 2 hours time. There are 5 descriptive questions also in the written
test paper which is to be completed in an hours time. The total written test is
for 250 marks. The descriptive test consists of questions on written English
skills

Letters
and
Essays.
Once you have successfully cleared the written test you are then eligible for the
personal round of interview. The interviewer panel consists of 3 members
usually and asks questions based on personal information and certain banking

Have you had any conversation with the other job seekers sitting outside, how
will you differentiate yourself from them?
How do you plan to compete with the other job seekers, they being more

How will your chosen subjects help you in the banking field?
What brings you to the banking industry, any motive or inspiration?
Why did you just prepare for the Banking exams and not for any other fields
exams?
The Indian Banking industry is going through several challenges, what are
