COLLECTION OR
STORY?

Much more than by their

collection, museums are
defined by the stories they
tell.

Museums tell Stories

People usually assume that

museums are primarily
collections of objects, but they
are not

Museums tell Stories

Museums are about stories and knowledge,

with people using the collections as catalysts

and information carriers for those
conversations
museums would re-invent themselves when
they realise that they are not about things, but
are for people

Museums tell Stories

The value of the Museums

collections resides in these stories

that tell how the objects came to be
here, how they help us make sense
of this world and how they help
shape our futures.

The power of stories

Stories matter. Stories have been

used to dispossess and to malign,
but stories can also be used to
empower and to humanize. Stories
can break the dignity of a people,
but stories can also repair that
broken dignity.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

storytelling

Since the very beginnings of man,

storytelling has been at the heart of
human existence. From the very first
pictures drawn on the walls of caves to
our blogs and "tweets" of today we are
& always have been storytellers.

storytelling

Possibly, in no other place is storytelling

more prevalent than in our museums.

Since the earliest "public" museums,
dating back to around 530 BC (EnnigaldiNanna's museum) stories and accounts of
history, invention, art and our natural
world have been told through artifact
collections and exhibits.

Museums tell
stories.
