HW #10 Project Power Supply and LED Indicator: LT Spice

Objective
Design a resistor/LED circuit such that the diode will be brightly let when V out = 5 volts.
Assume the diode has a forward voltage of 3.65V and a forward current of 20mA, when the
diode is brightly emitting light.
Before calculating for R3 we must first check to make sure that V out is equal to 5 volts.
R2
300
V out =V ref x 1+
=1.25 x 1+
=1.25 x 4=5 V
R3
100
Where V ref = 1.25 according to the data sheet for the LT1086H data sheet found below:

( )

When the diode is brightly lit, its forward current will be 20mA and its forward voltage will be
3.65. Using the formula provide we can solve for R3 :
V out V F
where I D =20 mA V out =5 V V F =3.65
R3
V V F
5V 3.65 V
I D = out
=.02 A=
=R 3 x .02 A=1.35 V
R3
R3
1.35 V
R 3=
=67.5 but we must have R3 = a whole number so round up.
.02 A
I D=

R3=68
Plugging in this value to the circuit diagram in LT Spice will give us the following.:

Discussion
I did not get the desired results but I was able to get within acceptable range V out and I D .
Some possible reasons for this include rounding up R3 from 67.5 to 68. Thus changing
I D due to the equation:

V out V F
R3
Another probable cause is the temperature of the room that causes the V ref to change ranging
from 1.225V to 1.270V. This circuit assumes a normal temperature of 25 C
