B. SINOPSIS KURSUS
This course introduces students to the concepts in linguistics which have relevance on
language teaching. It discusses the nature or language, linguistics and language
teaching, the psychology of language, language and society. They will also be exposed
to transformational-generative grammar, contrastive analysis, sound patterns and
meanings.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Relate the theories learnt to actual use of English (C3).
2. Demonstrate knowledge of linguistics in classroom discussions (P2).
3. Formulate critical responses to issues in linguistics (A3).
4. Communicate effectively in discussions and discourse (CS2).

Notes:
1. On line Quizzes (15%)
There will be a total of 5 quizzes throughout the semester. Questions will be based on the topic in
the modules that students need to read every week. It is COMPULSORY for students to answer the
quizzes on line.
2. In class Quiz (10%)
This 30 minutes In-class Quiz will familiarize students with the format of the final exam questions.
This is an open book quiz, students may bring and refer to their notes during the Quiz.
3. Assignment 1 (15%)
Developing words and sentences for primary school children:
This is an individual assignment. Students are to produce 50 electronic flash cards and show
how pupils can make sentences from the words given. The words should reflect the level of the
pupils the cards are meant for. The work must be original (original drawing) not copied from
internet sources.
Please give its source and do not copy directly from existing flash cards.
Number of words 50 and 50 sentences for the primary pupils.
Students are reminded to NOT copy readily available materials in the market. Plagiarism will be
given an F grade.
4. Assignment 2 (20%)
Teaching module for lower primary school pupils : Using Phonics
In groups of 2 3 people, students develop a teaching module to teach pronunciation and
phonics to primary school pupils.
The length of this assignment is 90 100 pages or more depending on the topics.
You must include teaching notes, pronunciation exercises, word blends, phonics for the pupils.

Students are expected to go over the modules on their own. You must submit your assignments according
to the deadlines given to the lecturers who are teaching on that day. Late submissions will not be
accepted.
