Lesson Title: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Instructional Objective: During this lesson students will retell a familiar story by placing the
key events in order of occurrence.
Materials: The book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Interactive White Board.
Interactive PPT presentation. Hungry Caterpillar stick puppets.
Lesson:
Prior Knowledge: Present the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Ask the students who has
read/heard the book. Ask the students if they know what the story is about. Discuss the story.
Large Group: I am going to ask you to put the events of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in order.
Please pay attention to the day of the week and what he eats Read the story The Very hungry
Caterpillar. Discuss the words and ask questions.
Differentiation: Show the animated video reenactment of the story The Very Hungry
Caterpillar. (if needed)
Introduce the activity:
I need help from my friends to put the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar in order. We will use
the large screen to match the number of items, the food, and the day of the week. We will also
have a counsel in the back with hand puppets to help our friends who are choosing the answer.
Step 1: Place the numbers in order.
Step 2: Place the food in order

Step 3: Place the days of the week in order.


Step 4: Use stick puppets to visualize the end of the book.
Activity: Use the touch screen on the interactive white board to place the number of items, the
food, and the day of the week. Use the interactive PPT. Discuss the sequence of events and
discuss how to use clues to figure out the answers. Use the puppets to wrap up the story.
Closing: After all the events are in order review the PowerPoint and retell the story.
