Unless specifically designed, GRP pipes are not normally suitable to withstand end loads developed by internal pressure. External anchorages are, therefore, necessary at ‘changes of direction. Where pipes are designed to have longitudinal strength to withstand end loads they should bbe marked with the letters ‘LS’ in @ box. (See 9.1(g),) 7.3 Resistance to external load (stiffness). Pipes shall be classified according to their minimum initial specific stiffness as follows: mark 250 £4 = 2501? rnc 400 Eh = 400 Nin? mak 525 Eh = 526 Nin wn 680 Eh = 650i? mark 900 £4 = 900 N/m? mark 1100 —= 1100 N/m? mark 4000 4000 N/m? mark 8000 ~£5- = 8000 N/m? where 1 is the moment of inertia of the pipe wall per unit length (in m*/m); E is the bending modulus (in N/m?) in the circum- ferential direction; and Dis the nominal diameter (in Pipes having other stif nesses may be supplied by agree- ment between the manufacturer and the purchaser. NOTE. Attention is drawn to the fact that unacceptable strain may bbe induced in ‘thick walled pipes at comparatively small deflections, eg 5% 7.4 Compatibility with liquids. Pipes and fittings for use with liquids shall be classified as in 7.4.1 or 7.4.2. 7.4.1 Compatible with potable water. Pipes and fittings which are suitable for use with potable water shall be marked 'P” in a box. Such pipes and fittings shall be tested to confirm that they ‘will not impair the wholesome nature of the water. Tests shall be included to determine the degree of effect on taste and odour, colour and turbidity, the change in levels of toxic metals and other toxic substances and whether or ‘not the pipes and fittings support the growth of bacteria and fungi. These effects shall be within the limits required by the user. 7.4.2 Not compatible with potable water. Pipes and fittings Which are not suitable for use with potable water shall be ‘marked with a box which shall be left empty. Where aggressive fluids, such as some industrial wastes, are to be conveyed, or where the pipe is to be used in an unusual external environment, the recommendations of the manufacturer should be sought. BS 5480 : Part 1: 1977 8, Beam strength ‘The ability of pipes to support beam loads may be ‘measured by their longitudinal strenath. Pipes of all classifications shall have an initial ultimate resistance 10 longitudinal tensile force per unit of circumference of not less than the following: Lup to and including 600 mm nominal diameter: 150 N/mm above 600 rm up to and including 1200 mm nominal diameter: 200 N/mm above 1200 mm up to and including 2400 mm nominal diameter: 250 N/mm above 2400 mm up to and including 4000 mm nominal diameter: 300 N/mm ‘The above requirements are intended to provide adequate strength for normal handling and laying conditions. They are not to be used for design purposes. Pipos intended to withstand the end load resulting from internal pressure or the beam load resulting from support on piers will normally require higher longitudinal strengths. 9. Marking 9.1. Al pipes (including cut lengths) and fittings supplied shall be indelibly marked with (a) the number of this British Standard, i.e. BS 5480 Part 1; (b) the manufacturer’s name, initials or identification mark; (c} the nominal diameter in millimetres; (a) the classification : pressure rating, stiffness. To avoid possible confusion, pipes rated at 2.5 bar or 12.6 bar shall be marked 2% or 12% and not 2.5 or 12.8; {e} the date of manufacture; (8) the letter ‘P’ set in a box, where pipes and fittings are suitable for use with potable water. Where pipes and fittings are not suitable for potable water a box ‘marking shall be shown but left empty; (g) the letters ‘LS’ set in a box, where pipes and fittings are designed to withstand longitudinal end loads, developed by internal pressure. Where pipes and fittings are not suitable for end loads a box marking shall be shown but left empty; (h) the angle of bend (in degrees) in the case of fittings. This information shall be stated in the following form: BS 5480 : Part 1 - ABC - 300 - 16 - 650 -Jan‘77- [P}- [S]-90°. 92 The information given in the example in 9.1 may be ‘arranged in several lines provided that the order is preserved. Any additional marks required by the purchaser shall be the subject of a special agreement between the manufacturer ‘and the purchaser. The manufacturer may add other marks provided that they do not conflict with those stated above.
