werepresentedintermsofthevariationinheaddrivingpowerandeflicieneyThe
effectofairleakageinthesuctionsystemwasalsoexaminedltwasfoundinthe
presentexperimentsthattheexistenceofaprerotationshoweditseffectofim
provingthecavitationperformanceofapump
1lntroduction
Thepresentpaperpresentssomeexperimentalresultsontheperformancetest
ofacentrifugalpumpinstalledinthesystemofacavitationtunnelrecentlycon
structedattheFluidMechanicsLaboratoryoftheHolkaidoUniversity
Cavitationcharacteristicsofthepumpwerefirstexaminedintermsofthe
reductionoftotalheaclandefficiencyaswellasatrendofincreasingthedriving
shafthorsepowerinthecavitationregionunderaconstantloadofdischarge
quantlty
Itisgenerallyacceptedthesedaysthatanintroductionofacertainamount
ofairtotheupperpartofthedrafttubeofareactiontypeofturbinediminishes
unfavorablefeaturesofthecavitationphenomenaOntheotherhandtheleakage
ofairinthesuctionsystemofapumpcausesconsiderab1ehindranceinthe
maintainanceofitsfunctioninraisingliquidtotherequirecllevelWithspecial
regarcltothistheinfiuenceofairleakageinthesuctionsystemontheperform
anceofthepumpwasexaminedasasecondstepltwasdemonstratedthatair
leakageisinvariablyaccompaniedbyanunfavorableeffectwhichresultsina
dropinheadanincreaseintherequiredshafthorsepowerwhichleadstoalow
eringofefliciency
Finallytheprerotationatthesuctioneyeoftheimpellerwasestimatedbasecl
onanidealve1ocitytriangleattheinletofthevanetoinvestigatetherelation
betweencavitationcharacteristicsandtlievaluteofprerotation
Themajorityoftheresultswereprepareclinacceptabledimensionlessforms
forthepurposeofprovidingmaterialforthemodelstudyofapump

asmallervalueofthenetpositivesuctionheadThereforeitmaybepermissible
toconcludethattheexistenceofaprerotationintheclirectionofuihasatrend
toimprovethecavitationperformanceofanimpellerofapump
