A Literary Analysis on Vigilante

Vigilante is an action-thriller directed by Marc Joseph Pranza. The play was
first published on May 18, 2014 and it was presented in UP Mindanao last March 2014.
Pranza is a Filipino playwright studying BA English-Creative at the University of the
Philippines Mindanao. He is a well-known writer and has participated in various writing
workshops in Davao and Iligan.
The play Vigilante revolves around Jaime Villareal- a 19 year old police officer,
son of Captain Iilario Villareal. The play depicts Villareals transition from being an
aspiring police officer to becoming a notorious police asset. In the play, Villareal was
described as a person with a strong sense of justice. Also, he seemed very careful about
his words and actions during the earlier portion of the play. Other characters portrayed
on the play include: Bobot and Alfonso Almeda. Bobot, a 32 year old police asset, was
portrayed in the play as a drunkard and rash thinker who taunted Jaime in the whole
play to do dubious decisions. Another character depicted was Alfonso Almeda, a 27 year
old police asset who was responsible for killing Captain Iilario Villareal. The play took
place at night in a dim area near Alfonsos house. The story was grounded on the
conflict between how justice should be handed out- either with conventional due process
or using alternative illegal options. The former involves turning over Alfonso to the police
while the latter includes killing him and putting justice into their hands. The story began
on the conversation of Bobot and Jaime which is mostly about Jaimes background
before he was about to work as a police asset. Their conversation got deeper to the
point where Bobots words got under Jaimes skin which sparked an argument between
the two. The commotion became so loud that Alfonso noticed it and was horrified to see
Bobot and Jaime with guns on their hands. Before he could even get his own gun, Bobot
shot him in his hand and leg which caused Alfonso to fall on the ground powerless and
disabled. Alfonso begged for his life and tried to justify that killing Captain Iilaro was only
part of his job and not his intention. Jaime and Alfonso then said their apologies and
before Alfonso could even get his other gun, Jaime shot Alfonso twice killing him right on

the spot. Bobot was applauding from behind and welcomed Jaime because he is now
recognized as a certified vigilante.
