EE110L Lab Guidelines

Fall 2015

Requirements
Attend all lab sessions.
Demonstrate academic integrity.
Complete the pre-lab prior to the lab session.
Read the lab manual prior to the experiment.
Complete the pre-lab section of the experiment prior to class (the TA will sign it at the start of the
session).
Use your own data in your lab reports.
Only you and your partner should be using your data from any experiment.
Ensure that your data has been checked and signed by the instructor at the end of each session.
Organize yourself.
Get everything you need from the stock room.
Clear the lab workspace of any personal belongings.
Return materials to the stock room at the end of the session.
Clean your workspace before leaving the lab session.
Participate fully.
Both members of each group are expected to equal participants and be in full comprehension of the lab
material.
Pre-labs and lab reports are to be completed individually.
Turn all reports in on time.
Late reports are to be penalized at a rate of 20% per day.
No credit for reports which are more than 4 days late.

Grading
Prelabs (18 Points)
Should be completed by the start of the lab session.

Zero credit if not signed by the TA.


Lab Reports (37 Points)
Title Page (2 Points)
Each experiment should have the same title as the lab manual.
Include the course number, your name, UID, partners name, data and lab section.
Introduction (3 Points)
Summarize the goal of the experiment and the theory behind it.
A detialed description of the experiment is given in the lab manual. Read it and summarize the
main points.
Procedure (3 Points)
Summaraze any procedure you performed which was different from the lab manual.
Can be omitted if there were no differences from the lab manual.
Results (9 Points)

Place data in tables for easy readability.


Put graphs, tables and figures inline instead of seperate pages.
Always put units on numbers and remember to label your graphs, tables and figures.
Error analysis - Create tables that compare your measured results with your expected results (from
prelab) along with the percentage error. Explain any large discrepencies observed.
Remember to record all data specifically mentioned in the lab manual.
Discussion (12 Points)
Discuss your data and the conclusions you draw from it. Spend most of your time on this section as
it indicates whether the experiment was performed successfully.
Try to answer the following questions:

What does your data indicate?


Does it make sense?
How does it compare to theory?
Provide theoretical explanations for your results.
Comment on any sources of error.

Remember to answer specific question found at the end of each experiment in the lab manual. Box
your answers!
Conclusion (8 Points)

Was the experiment successful?


Did it demonstrate the theory?
Discuss the implications of your findings.
Did you encounter any problems?
How can this experiment be improved?

Submission
You must submit:

Prepared lab report in accordance with the guidelines of the lab manual and this supplement.
Prelab, signed by the TA at the beginning of the lab session.
Box all of your answers.
Try to print on both sides of the paper.
